These instructions must be followed when doing the assessment in this unit.
This competency is to be assessed using standard and authorised work practices, safety
requirements and environmental constraints.
Assessment of essential underpinning knowledge will usually be conducted in an off-site
context.
Assessment is to comply with relevant regulatory or Australian standards' requirements.
Resource implications for assessment include:
• an induction procedure and requirement
• realistic tasks or simulated tasks covering the mandatory task requirements
• relevant specifications and work instructions
• tools and equipment appropriate to applying safe work practices
• support materials appropriate to activity
• workplace instructions relating to safe work practices and addressing hazards and
emergencies
• material safety data sheets
• research resources, including industry-related systems information.
Reasonable adjustments for people with disabilities must be made to assessment processes
where required. This could include access to modified equipment and other physical
resources and the provision of appropriate assessment support.

What happens if your result is ‘Not Yet Competent’ for one or more assessment tasks?

The assessment process is designed to answer the question “has the participant satisfactorily
demonstrated competence yet?” If the answer is “Not yet”, then we work with you to see how
we can get there.
In the case that one or more of your assessments has been marked ‘NYC’, your Trainer will
provide you with the necessary feedback and guidance, in order for you to resubmit/redo your
assessment task(s).

What if you disagree on the assessment outcome?

You can appeal against a decision made in regards to an assessment of your competency. An
appeal should only be made if you have been assessed as ‘Not Yet Competent’ against
specific competency standards and you feel you have sufficient grounds to believe that you
are entitled to be assessed as competent.
You must be able to adequately demonstrate that you have the skills and experience to be
able to meet the requirements of the unit you are appealing against the assessment of.
You can request a form to make an appeal and submit it to your Trainer, the Course
Coordinator, or an Administration Officer. The RTO will examine the appeal and you will be

advised of the outcome within 14 days. Any additional information you wish to provide may
be attached to the form.
What if I believe I am already competent before training?

If you believe you already have the knowledge and skills to be able to demonstrate
competence in this unit, speak with your Trainer, as you may be able to apply for Recognition
of Prior Learning (RPL).

Some common risks associated with the design of a surface drainage system:
1. Inadequate Slope and Grading: Flawed slopes and grading can lead to water accumulation
or ineffective drainage. A thorough site assessment and surveying are crucial for establishing
the correct inclines to ensure efficient water runoff.
2. Failure to Account for Soil Conditions: Various soil types exhibit distinct drainage qualities.
Overlooking these soil characteristics during the design phase can result in inadequate
drainage performance.
3. Inadequate Regulatory Compliance: Designing the drainage system without meeting the
requirements of local, state, and federal regulations can result in legal complications and
the possibility of fines.

P a g e 7 | 11
4. Inadequate Drainage Capacity: Creating a system with inadequate drainage capacity may
result in flooding and water accumulation. It is essential to accurately estimate anticipated
water flow rates and construct the system to accommodate peak rainfall occurrences.
5. Inaccurate Hydrological Analysis: Mistakes in analysing hydrological data and rainfall
patterns can result in underestimating or overestimating the sizing of the drainage system.
Some common risks associated with the construction phase of a surface
drainage system:
1. Weather and Environmental Factors: Unpredictable weather elements, such as intense
rainfall, storms, or extreme temperatures, have the potential to disrupt construction
processes, induce erosion, and affect the safety of workers.
2. Site conditions: such as unforeseen soil conditions, groundwater levels, or hidden
subsurface obstructions, have the potential to create complications during excavation and
construction activities. These complications may result in delays and increased project costs.
3. Supply Chain Disruptions: The construction process may experience deceleration due to
delays or insufficiencies in the delivery of construction materials, equipment, or specialized
components.
4. Equipment Breakdowns: The occurrence of mechanical failures or breakdowns in
construction equipment has the potential to disrupt operations and lead to project delays.
5. Utility Conflicts: Risks may emerge during construction if there are inaccuracies in the
precise identification and effective management of pre-existing utility lines like water, gas,
and electricity.

Task 4
Imagine that the subdivision is handed over for the construction. List at least 10 equipment
and machineries along with their functions. Include your answers in the allocated table in
the answer sheet.

Task 5
Provide a work breakdown structure showing the tasks in construction process to the
project close out along with a brief of each stage. Include your answers in the allocated
table in in the answer sheet.

No Task Task brief

1 Site assessment and land surveying This phase entails a comprehensive
examination of the building location,
encompassing factors such as the site's
topographical features, soil structure,
drainage system, and potential obstacles.
Furthermore, a land survey is performed
to determine exact measurements and
property boundaries.
2 Earthwork and excavation This assignment encompasses the
readiness of the construction site for
building activities. It encompasses tasks
like digging, leveling, and contouring the
terrain to establish a suitable foundation.
3 Pipe, fitting and manholes installation During this phase, below-ground
infrastructure such as water, sewage, and
drainage systems are implemented. This
involves the installation of pipes,
connections, and the establishment of
manholes to ensure proper flow and
connectivity.
4 Quality control and inspection Quality control and inspection are critical
for ensuring that the construction process
aligns with established standards and
specifications. Inspections are carried out
to confirm compliance and identify any
possible problems or deviations.
5 Testing and validation This entails conducting thorough testing

P a g e 9 | 11
on the installed systems to verify their
proper functionality. This encompasses
pressure tests for pipes, electrical
inspections, and other validations to
ensure both functionality and safety.
6 Grading and land shaping This activity concentrates on refining the
landscape for specific objectives,
encompassing alterations to slopes,
elevation, and contours to attain the
desired landscaping and grading results.
7 Documentation and reporting Documentation plays a vital role in record-
keeping and meeting regulatory
requirements. During this phase, reports,
drawings, and other pertinent documents
are generated to monitor advancement
and guarantee adherence to regulations.
8 Project close out The final phase encompasses the
execution of administrative duties to
formally conclude the project. This entails
conducting final inspections, obtaining
client approvals, and facilitating the
transfer of all pertinent documentation
and keys.

Task 6
If the catchment area is 210 ha (2.10 km2). An ARI of 5 years was adopted. Calculate the
peak charge if the runoff coefficient C is 0.325
tc = 0.76 A0.38 = 0.76 x 2.10.38 = 1.007 hour = 1.007 x 60 = 60.45 minutes
from the ARI table, the intensity = 28.10 mm/hour
Q5 = (C5 . ltc5 . A)/ 360 = (0.325 x 28.1 x 210)/ 360 = 5.327 mm3/s
