It is indicated in rrl, that the lemon Mint infusion natural fragrant repellent

can be effective as ant repellent While traditional chemical-based ant

repellents in the market promise effective results, they can potentially harm

both the environment and human health. In contrast, organic ant repellent

solutions derived from lemon-mint infusion offer an eco-friendly and safe

alternative. The efficacy and safety of lemon-mint infusion as an ant repellent

are highlighted through a study analyzing its phytochemical components and

antibacterial characteristics, utilizing organic solvents like hexane and

methanol. The results reveal bioactive substances such as tannins, alkaloids,

flavonoids, phenols, terpenoids, and saponins in the methanolic extract,

demonstrating positive antibacterial effects against microorganisms.

Additionally, the exploration of lemon-mint infusion as an ant repellent extends

to the transformation of its raw materials.

Based on the findings, the study concluded that the lemon mint infusion

is the most in demand marketable product in Dagatan, Taysan, Batangas,

lemon and mint has strong properties and a pleasant scent rather than

traditional chemical pesticides, there is no significant difference between the

traditional chemical-based product and substitute product is eco-friendlier,

safer, and cheaper than the traditional commercial Pesticides.

Based from the findings and conclusion of the study, it is best to save

and spend money prudently such as buying less expensive but cost-effective

products, consumers should consider the content and properties before

purchasing a product as it can be harmful of it has chemicals that are not safe

for everyday use, the future researchers should try and explore on discovering

unorthodox but eco-friendlier product such as this that can contribute on

minimizing the people's daily expenses.

Based on the findings and conclusion it indicates that respondents

typically use Insect Aerosol Spray as their preferred insect repellent because

it’s easier and safe for them to use. The effectiveness of Lemon-Mint infusion

natural fragrant ant repellent and commercial ant repellent are almost the

same, however it’s more convenient for them to use Lemon-Mint infusion

since they preferred to use the Insect Aerosol Spray type of insect repellent.

The respondents preferred to bring the Lemon-Mint infusion so that they will

not worry about their safety on ant infestations. The researcher concluded that

the respondents prefer to answer agree with statements that align with their

convenience, but they also value a pleasant fragrance when using insect

repellent.

CHAPTER I

Background of the Study

Introduction

Ants play an essential role in most agricultural ecosystems worldwide.

Ants a species was known as member of the family of Formicidae, some

expertise estimated upwards of 20,000 exist. However, these tiny insects

have the remarkable ability to invade our homes, disturbing the peace and

disrupting our daily routines. Ant infestations can contaminate stored food

supplies, posing health and economic risks as they lead to food borne

illnesses, increased waste and financial loss Chaudhari et, al. (2018).

Additionally, ants have been known to transmit other foodborne diseases,

such as E. coli, Shigella and Salmonella bacteria, across food sources.

Lemon is species of small evergreen tree in the flowering plant family

Rutaceae. Lemon was originated in Asia, primarily Northeast, India, Northern

Myanmar, or China. Meanwhile, mint originated in the Mediterranean and was

later introduced to Britain and eventually America. It eventually, widely

cultivated. It can now be almost found anywhere in the Philippines. The lemon

plant forms an evergreen spreading bush or small tree,3-6 meter's meanwhile

mints have square stems and opposite aromatic leaves.

Many traditional methods rely on chemical pesticides that are harmful

not only to our health but also to our environment. This study proposes an

alternative natural and aromatic ant repellent using a combination of lemon

and mint. According to Rahman (2018), lemons contain many phytochemicals

that have been shown the ability to repel common household ants, supporting

the goal of finding effective natural repellents. According to Soleiman et, al.
DAGATAN INTEGRATED NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 2

(2022) aromatic herbs such as mint have received particular attention from

phytochemicals and their potential health benefits. In addition, these extracts

also provide fragrance.

The consequences of ant infestations are very serious problem. Ant

bites can cause pain, itching, and allergic reactions in some individuals,

posing health concerns. Furthermore, they can also damage wooden

structures, potentially weakening them over time, and ants can contaminate

food and food preparation areas. Moreover, this can cause serious nuisance

both indoor and outdoor settings, affecting our daily routine. These factors are

considered as major obstacles to socio-economic development.

The researchers decided to conduct this study to evaluate and promote

the use of lemon mint infusion as an ecological and effective solution against

ant infestations. Our goals include evaluating the properties of this natural

infusion, understanding its practical application, and promoting its adoption,

as a safer and more environmentally friendly approach to solve ant

infestation. This research aims to contribute to creating a healthier living

environment and a more sustainable solution to domestic problems.

Conceptual Framework

Definition of Terms

In order to comprehensively understand the study, the following terms

were defined:

Lemon. The lemon is a citrus fruit that is vividly yellow. Because it

contains a lot of citric acid, it has a distinctly sour flavor. Citrus limon is its

official scientific name, and it belongs to the Rutaceae family of flowering

plants. Ratini et, al.(2022). In this research, lemon is one of the primary

ingredients for the repellent.

Mint. A type of aromatic plant that belongs to the mint genus (Mentha).

The eastern Mediterranean native mint takes its name from the mythical

Minthe (Mintho) nymph. Yetter et, al. (2022). In this research, mint is one of

the main ingredients for the repellent.

Infusion. A simple chemical process used to extract plant material that is

volatile and dissolves readily or release its active ingredients easily in organic
DAGATAN INTEGRATED NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 9

solvents Stéphane et, al. (2021). In this research, infusion is the primary

method on how the repellent is created.

Repellent. A repellent is generally defined as a substance that

discourages arthropods from landing or stinging human skin Lee (2018). In

this research, this is the primary product produced or more known as the

output of the research.

Ant. Ants are known for their aggressive interactions, often competing

for resources such as nest sites and food, whether it's within their own

species or with other ant species Silva et, al. (2023). In this research, the ant

is what the repellent is purposely made of.

Pest Control. A process that maintains nuisance organisms below

economic thresholds, is a complex ecological process often mediated by

biodiversity Lucatero et, al. (2021). In this research, achieving this is the

primary goal of the made repellent.

Fragrant. Also known as odorants, refer to compounds capable of

producing volatile chemical constituents with an aroma or fragranceAl-

Hashem et, al. (2022). In this research, this is another factor planned to attain

for the made repellent.

CHAPTER II

THE REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents a detailed review of the existing literature related

to the topic of this study. This will also demonstrate a synthesis of theoretical

studies and relevant studies to fully understand the research to be carried out.

This chapter provides researcher with basis of developing appropriate

hypothesis. This will act as a literature review in the use of lemon and mint as

insecticides to repel ants.

Lemon and Mint Compounds and Benefits

According to Wei Ping Ng (2018) this study investigated the potential of

Pandanus amaryllifolius (Pandan), Citrus limon (Lemon), and used coffee as

natural ant repellents. The researcher found that used coffee and lemon

showed repellency against common household ants, while Pandan did not.

They also identified terpenoids as the most probable phytochemical

responsible for the repellency properties of lemon and coffee extract. Both

Lemon mint infusion and lemon and used coffee extracts are natural and

effective ant repellent solutions. However, synthetic pesticides can be harmful

to human health and the environment. Meanwhile, natural ant repellents are

generally safe for humans and pets.

Singh et, al. (2022) defines that citrus limon (lemon) is a citrus species of

plants belonging to the Rutaceae family. It is an important ingredient in many

DAGATAN INTEGRATED NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 11

ethnic herbal medicines and has been shown to have a variety of therapeutic

properties, including anti-cancer, anti-tumor, and anti-inflammatory properties.

The lemon extracts and phytochemicals have shown immense therapeutic

potential because of their anticancer, anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory nature.

These properties are mediated by the presence of different phytochemicals,

vitamins and nutrients in the citrus fruits. The lemon has been used in

traditional medicine for centuries to treat a variety of ailments, including

cancer, ulcers, and helminthiasis. It has also been shown to be effective in

treating insect bites and stings. The lemon is a good source of vitamin C,

which is an antioxidant. Antioxidants help to protect cells from damage

caused by free radicals. Free radicals are molecules that can damage DNA,

proteins, and other molecules in the body. Damage to these molecules can

lead to a variety of health problems, including cancer, heart disease, and

stroke. Furthermore, lemon can be utilized as a natural fragrant ant repellent

solution. Citronellal, an effective insect repellent, is a natural compound found

in both lemon and mint. Additionally, citronella is also a common ingredient in

commercial insect repellents. Moreover, this infusion serves as a safe and

effective way to repel ants and other insects while providing a pleasant and

refreshing scent to your home.

Soleiman et, al. (2022) stated that the mint and thyme are two herbs that

are used in food and drinks for their flavor, smell, and health. This review

looks at the phenolic compounds in mint and thyme, which are natural

chemicals that can promote health and fight infection. Lemon mint infusion is

a natural ant repellent solution that contains phenolic compounds with

DAGATAN INTEGRATED NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 12

antimicrobial and insecticidal activity. Additionally, these compounds can

deter ants when applied to surfaces or sprayed around areas where ants are

active. Moreover, lemon mint infusion is a safe and environmentally friendly

alternative to synthetic ant repellents. Furthermore, research is needed to

develop and evaluate slow-release formulations of lemon mint infusion to

maximize its effectiveness and extend its duration of action.

Wani et, al.(2022) developed a safe and affordable ant repellent using

natural extracts of citronella and peppermint oils. To evaluate the repellent's

efficacy, they placed 20 ants in a container with bait and applied the repellent

around it. The ants' behavior was observed every 30 minutes for six hours.

The results revealed that the repellent effectively repelled ants. The mean

percentage of ants repelled by the repellent ranged from 70.01% to 85.00%,

indicating that it was able to repel a significant portion of the ants. An ANOVA

test was also conducted to compare the repellent's effectiveness against a

control group. Moreover, the ANOVA test results showed a statistically

significant difference between the repellent and the control group,

demonstrating that the repellent was more effective at repelling ants than the

control group. Furthermore, the study on citronella and peppermint oil

extracts, lemon mint infusion has also demonstrated promising results as an

effective and safe ant repellent. Additionally, the study demonstrated that a

combination of citronella and peppermint oil extracts can serve as a safe and

effective natural alternative to commercial ant repellents.

DAGATAN INTEGRATED NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 13

Natural Ant Repellent

De Pedro et, al.(2022) concluded the effectiveness of using lemon mint

infusion to protect micro-irrigation equipment from ant damage. Researchers

have developed a new type of drip irrigation tubing that contains repellent

additives to protect against ant damage. The tubing was tested in a crop

where significant ant damage is often reported, and the results showed that

the tubing was effective in reducing damage. The researchers incorporated

lemon mint infusion into drip tubing using a complex process called plastic

compounding, injection, and extrusion. Additionally, they used the lemon mint-

infused tubing to irrigate a crop where significant ant damage is often

reported. The results showed that the lemon mint-infused tubing significantly

reduced ant damage compared to control tubing containing no repellent

additives. These findings suggest that lemon mint infusion is a promising

natural ant repellent solution for protecting agricultural micro-irrigation

equipment.

Chen.(2020) defines that the invasive red imported fire ant,

Solenopsisinvicta Buren, is a significant pest that is currently managed using

synthetic insecticides. Red imported fire ants are a serious pest that cause

billions of dollars in damage each year. Synthetic insecticides are the main

tool used to control them, but there is growing concern about their potential

negative effects. However, there is a growing interest in developing safer

alternatives, such as natural toxins, repellents, and fumigants. Additionally,

lemon mint infusion is a natural ant repellent solution that contains a variety of

phytochemicals, including terpenoids, which have been shown to have

DAGATAN INTEGRATED NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 14

insecticidal activity. Moreover, lemon mint infusion can be used to repel fire

ants by spraying it around areas where they are active, or by incorporating it

into bait products.

Effectiveness of Lemon and Mint Infusion Compared to Traditional

Chemical ant Pesticides.

Moreno et,al.(2019) defines that peppermint essential oil was the most

effective in killing Red Imported Fire Ants (Solenopsis Invicta) when compared

to lemon juice. The Red Imported Fire Ant, or Solenopsis Invicta

(Hymenoptera: Formicidae) (Buren), is a prevalent nuisance in the United

States. This insect is becoming a more serious pest because to its painful

sting, the potential for serious consequences, and the harm it can do to crops.

Since safe and readily available commercial insecticides aren't always

available, the purpose of this experiment was to see if any common

household materials could be used as effective substitutes. The peppermint

oil was the most successful in getting rid of Solenopsis Invicta according to

the data. Lemon mint infusion may be an effective ant repellent, similar to how

peppermint essential oil was found to be effective in killing ants. Both

Peppermint and lemon mint both contain terpenoids, which are responsible for

their insect repellent properties. Additionally, Lemon mint infusion is non-toxic

and biodegradable, which makes it a safe and environmentally friendly

alternative to synthetic pesticides. Therefore, Lemon mint infusion is a

promising natural ant repellent solution that is worth further research.

DAGATAN INTEGRATED NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 15

Coetzee et, al. (2022) stated that the efficacy of natural insect repellents

can be significantly improved by encapsulating the essential oils, making them

comparable to synthetic compounds used for pest management. The

foundation of protection is the addition of insect repellent substances found in

synthetic or plant-oil derivatives. Natural chemicals have a very low

insecticidal and repellant efficacy when pure because of their great volatility.

Slow-release methods, including encapsulating the essential oils, have

significantly increased the effectiveness, to the point where it is now on par

with synthetic compounds used for pest management. However, natural

insect repellents have low efficacy when pure due to their volatility.

Meanwhile, slow-release methods can significantly improve the effectiveness

of natural insect repellents. This suggests, Lemon mint infusion has the

potential to be a safe and effective alternative to synthetic ant repellents

Efficiency of lemon and mint as ant repellent agent

Moreno (2019) conducted the study with objective of the effectiveness

lemon juice and peppermint oil to the reduction of Solenopsis Invicta

(Hymenoptera: Formicidae) otherwise known as Red Imported Fire Ant. This

study goes into detail upon what the Solenopsis Invicta is and its capabilities

to health and property damage. This experiment tested the effectiveness of

two common household items, peppermint essential oil and lemon juice, as

insecticides against red imported fire ants. The results showed that

peppermint essential oil was the more effective insecticide of the. Upon their

testing it has been shown that lemon juice and peppermint oil individually can

be used as repellent for Solenopsis Invicta.

DAGATAN INTEGRATED NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 16

Bernard et, al. (2020) stated that the spearmint oil, peppermint oil, neem

oil, and d-limonene were tested as repellents against the European red ant,

Myrmica rubra. In both laboratory and field trials, all four extracts repelled ants

from nesting in plant pots. Mint oils were the most effective repellents,

providing protection. These results suggest that mint oils have the potential to

be used as low-hazard repellents against M. rubra in greenhouse and nursery

settings. Additionally, lemon mint infusion is a natural and fragrant ant

repellent solution that can be used in both indoor and outdoor settings.

Moreover, lemon mint infusion is effective because ants dislike the smell of

lemon and mint. Lastly, the strong scent of these herbs disrupts ants'

communication and navigation abilities, making it difficult for them to find food

and nesting sites.

The Advantages of Lemon and Mint as Ant Repellent.

Lim et, al (2019) concluded that lemon, peppermint, and basil extracts

have been shown to be effective repellents and insecticides against common

urban ants. In metropolitan areas, pest ants are becoming a bigger problem,

and conventional insecticides don't work. Synthetic compounds should not be

used as long-term treatments. It has been demonstrated that plant extracts

from Mentha piperita, Citrus hystrix, and Ocimumbasilicum are beneficial

against insect pests. It is best to combine gel bait with botanical pesticides.

Urban pest ants are a growing issue, and traditional insecticides are

ineffective. Long-term solutions include plant extracts from citrus hystrix,

Mentha piperita, and Ocimumbasilicum. The study found that all three plant
DAGATAN INTEGRATED NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 17

extracts repelled ants, and that the repellency increased with increasing

concentration. Moreover, the study also found that the lemon and peppermint

extracts were insecticidal, and that the lethality increased with increasing

concentration. Additionally, the authors suggest that the combination of a

botanical insecticide and gel bait would be an ideal treatment for insect. pests.

Furthermore, lemon mint infusion is a natural ant repellent solution that has

the potential to be a safe and effective alternative to synthetic insecticides.

According to Li (2022) this study investigated the use of safe and

effective organic ant repellents for household use. Ant invasion can cause

health and financial problems for households. Professional insecticides are

not recommended for household use because they can harm humans and

animals. This study investigated safe organic ant repellents and found that

spearmint, mint oil, and Chinese essential balm are effective. They can be

used alone or mixed with honey as bait. Although the study did not test all

household-invasive ant species, it is still worth referencing for families with ant

problems. Lemon mint infusion is a natural ant repellent solution that contains

similar compounds to mint oil, such as menthol. Therefore, it is likely that

lemon mint infusion would also be effective in repelling ants.

which is related to lemon mint infusion natural fragrant ant repellent solution.

This chapter presented the review of related literature gathered from various

readings and sources which are found relevant to the study, and which is

related to lemon mint infusion natural fragrant ant repellent solution.

According to Lim et, al (2019) and Li (2022) their studies have indicated that

lemon and mint as an infusion has a potential in its effectiveness and viability

to be ant repellent, through the comparisons of different natural repellents.

Furthermore, according to Kristin Moreno et,al (2019) their study has

compared the effectiveness of peppermint oil to lemon mint as an alternative

ant repellent in this study they learned that both lemon mint infusion and

peppermint have found to be both effective to be a repellent. Additionally, the

lemon mint infusion is non-toxic and biodegradable which makes it safe and

environmentally friendly to be potentially alternative synthetic ant repellent.

Which can be shown by another study by Coetzee et, al (2022) according to

them. The foundation of protection is the addition of insect repellent

substances found in synthetic or plant-oil derivatives. Natural chemicals have

a very low insecticidal and repellant efficacy when pure because of their great

volatility. Slow-release methods, including encapsulating the essential oils,

have significantly increased the effectiveness, to the point where it is now on

par with synthetic compounds used for pest management. However, being

naturarepellent it will havelow efficacy when pure due to its volatility. However,

through methods it suggests that lemon mint infusion has the potential to be a
DAGATAN INTEGRATED NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 19

safe and effective alternative to synthetic ant repellent. In the study made by

Bernard et, al. (2020, they suggest that mint oils are effective low hazard

repellents against Myrmica rubra. Additionally, the lemon mint infusion that

can be used both indoors and outdoors settings. Furthermore, lemon mint

infusion is effective because ants dislike the smell of lemon and mint. Lastly,

the strong scent of these herbs disrupts ants' communication and navigation

abilities, making it difficult for them to find food and nesting sites. In the

Studies of Wei Ping Ng (2018) and Soleiman et, al. (2022), according to them

lemon and mint in comparisons to other alternatives have shown

effectiveness to being an ant repellent and is generally safe as to the

synthetic ant repellents following the study from Moreno et,al. According to De

Pedro et, al. (2022) their study states on how ants can damage property and

equipment. Furthermore, their study incorporates a lemon and mint mixture

into the tubing to irrigate a crop with significant ant damage and has shown

reduced in damage as to control. Through this it is to suggest that lemon mint

infusion is promising. In the study made by Moreno (2019), This study goes in

detail onto the capabilities on how the Solenopsis Invicta (Hymenoptera:

Formicidae) otherwise known as red imported fire ant. Additionally, this study

goes into the effectiveness of lemon juice and mint oil and have shown that

the mint is more effective as a repellent however lemon juice still shown some

effectiveness but overall testing shown both can individually be used as a

repellent for Solenopsis Invicta. Furthermore, through this study the lemon

mint infusion can be effective as a natural ant repellent.

includes the population, sample and sampling technique, data gathering

instrument, data gathering procedure and data analysis plan.

Research Design

The researcher will use a descriptive research design to systematically

gather data to describe a phenomenon, circumstances, or population. More

specifically, it assists in providing answers to the problem of researching the

what, when, where, and how questions as opposed to the why. The aim of

descriptive research design is to study one or more variables using a wide

range of research methods. Although qualitative research is primarily

quantitative, descriptive research can also make use of it. Valid and reliable

findings can be relied on with a carefully considered strategy. Finding traits,

frequencies, trends, and categories in a topic or issue about which little is

known can be accomplished with the help of descriptive research, based on

the statement of McCombes (2019).
