Lesson Plan in Arts 4

I. Learning Objectives
At the end of the 45-minute activity, the Grade 4 pupils should be able to do the
following with at least 85% accuracy:
1. tell that balance is part of design that is equal in distribution;
2. tell that proportion is the size of the different parts in a design agrees with one
another;
3. identify the three types of balance; and
4. explain the importance of balance and proportion.
II. Subject Matter
Grade 4 Balance and Proportion pp. 163-166
III. Materials
Pictures, charts, colors, sample arts

IV. Procedure
A. PREPARATION
Good morning, children. (Good morning, teacher.) You may now take your seats.
(Thank you, teacher.) How are you, my dear pupils? (We're doing fine, teacher.) Great to
hear that. Is there anyone absent today? (No, teacher.) Okay, very good!
Now, before we will start what are the things that we should always remember during
class?
1. Raise your hand if you want to talk.
2. Listen when other is talking.
3. Wait for your turn to speak.
4. Respect one another.
5. Always participate.
Very good! Now, I want you to look at this card. Are you familiar with it? (No,
teacher.) This is what we call an incentive card and we are going to use it for today's activity.
Are you excited? (Yes, teacher.) I will give each one of you a copy of this and once you
receive it, write your name Okay! So, every time you participate in our discussion teacher
will put any color in the blank canvas. Whoever earns a lot of colors at the end of our
discussion will receive a prize. Did you understand, children? (Yes, teacher.) Are you ready
to participate? (Yes, teacher.) Okay, that's great.
1. RECALL
Who can tell the class what we have discussed last meeting? (We have discussed
about the shapes and forms in arts.) Now who can tell what shape is? (Form of an object or its
outline, outer boundary, or outer surface.) How about forms? (Something that is three-
dimensional and encloses volume, having length, width, and height).
I have pictures here, and I want you to identify if the object is a shape or form.

1. 2. 3. 4.
What item number are shapes? (1 and 3 Teacher) Very good, class! What item
number are forms? (2 and 4 Teacher) Excellent! It seems like you are now ready for our next
topic.
2. MOTIVATION
Children, this time I will show you set of pictures, and I want you to carefully observe
the pictures I will show you. Are you ready? (Yes Ma’am) Very good. We will now start.

There are two pictures of different butterflies, what do you observe from the two
butterflies? (The first butterfly has different wings, and the second butterfly has normal
wings.) Very good observation, what picture of butterfly do you think is more eye pleasing?
(The second butterfly.) Why do you say the second butterfly is more eye pleasing? (Because
the wings are the same.) Excellent, children. I will show you another set of pictures, please
observe carefully.
What do you observe from the two pictures? (The first head has bigger right eye while
the second head is normal) Very Good Observation Children, what picture do you think is
more pleasing to look at? (the second picture because the head is normal) wonderful! why do
you think the second picture is not that eye pleasing? (Because the eye is to big and not
normal) Excellent, take note of the observations you have made because later we will be
revisiting your ideas.

B. PRESENTATION/PRELIMINARY ACTIVITY
What a fun and fruitful activity, class! Now, before we proceed to our main discussion let’s
have another activity, I want you to group yourselves into four. Are you in your groups now?
(Yes, teacher.) Very good! Listen for the instructions.
Each group will be given an envelope containing puzzles. Complete the puzzle and paste in
manila paper, once all group are complete, I want everyone to observe all the complete
puzzle and then one representative from the group will describe to the class your
observations. I will give you 5 minutes to complete the puzzle. Is everything clear? Are you
ready? (Yes, teacher.)

Group 3 Group 4
C. DISCUSSION
Very good presentation everyone, we are now going to discuss all your observations. You
will learn another principle of design today. For the first puzzle completed by group 1.

What is your observation in this artwork? (The lines, shapes, colors, and textures on both
sides are similar.) What else? (Both sides are like mirror of each other.) What do you call an
artwork that has equal halves? (Symmetrical Balance.) Very good. Symmetrical Balance is
present when an imaginary line is drawn in the middle of the design, whether horizontal or
vertical, and the result is one part being the mirror image of the other.
We are now going to the second groups puzzle.

What have you noticed? (Compared to the artwork earlier, this one does not have similar
weights, shapes, colors, and textures on the two opposite sides.) What else? (The elements are
distributed equally even though at first sight it does not look balanced at all.) Good
observation. If the first type of balance is Symmetrical, what do you think is the opposite of
it? (Asymmetrical Balance.) Very good. Asymmetrical Balance is present when the elements
are distributed equally even though at first sight the design does not look balanced at all.
Look at the puzzle of Group 3.

What have you noticed? (The visual elements are arranged around a central point.) What
else? (It is circular, and the center has caught my attention.) Then, what kind of artwork is
this? (Radial Balance.) Very good. Radial Balance is presented when elements have been
arranged around a central point. Overall, what principle of art is important to understand?
(Balance.) Why do you think so? (Because we enjoy viewing an artwork when it has balance,
and it catches the attention of the viewers.) Very good class. To understand more of this type
of Principle of arts, look at this chart.

though at first

at all.

Now let us look at the last puzzle completed by group 4. What do artists usually focus on
when painting a person? (The artists make sure that the body parts of the model are correct in
size so that it will look realistic.) You're correct. Although some do not follow these
guidelines, just like the artwork I'm holding now.
What have you noticed? (The size of the chick and the person do not look realistic at all.)
What do you think does the artist want the imply? (That not all artworks are supposed to look
realistic, and artists can be creative in their own way.) Good. What is the art principle does it
imply? (Proportion.) Very good class. Take note that proportion means that the size of the
different parts in design agree with one another.
D. GENERALIZATION
Okay class to sum up all our discussion today. What have we discussed today? (Balance and
Proportion.) Who can tell me what is balance? (Balance is an art principle means that part of
a design that is equal in distribution.) What are the three types of Balance? (Symmetrical,
Asymmetrical, and Radial Balance.) Very good! Now what is proportion? (Proportion is an
art principle that means the size of different parts in design agrees with one another.)
Excellent! Give ourselves a round of applause.

E. APPLICATION

I am very happy that you have able grasp important details of our lesson today, but to prove
that we will answer this simple activity by group. I want everyone to return to their respective
group. Listen to the instructions.
I will flash sample of arts and you will identify if it is balance and proportion. Write on your
manila paper the answer for each picture. Are you ready? We shall begin.

1. Proportion 2. Proportion

3. Balance 4. Proportion
5. Proportion 6. Balance

7. Balance 8. Balance

Post all your answers on the board and we will now check them.

F. Closing Activities
1. ASSESSMENT
Listen class, this time I'll be given you a short test to see if you are really listening and
understood our topic. Is that okay class? (Yes, teacher.) Very good. But before that, you can
tell me what are our standards during our quiz and exam time? (Read, understand, and follow
the instructions, be quiet, don't look at your classmate's paper, and trust yourself.) Very good.
Now listen to my instructions: Get 1/2 cross wise white paper, write your name, section, and
date.
Identification: Read and understand the statement and write your answer the space
provided.
__________ 1. This means that part of a design is equal in distribution.
__________ 2. This is present when the elements are distributed equally even though at
first sight, the design does not look balanced at all.
__________ 3. This is present when an imaginary line is drawn in the middle of the
design, whether horizontal or vertical, and the result is one part being a mirror image of
the other.
__________ 4. This means that the size of the different parts in a design agrees with one
another
__________ 5. This is present when the elements have been arranged around a central
point.

2. ASSIGNMENT
On a long sheet of bond paper, draw two things you can see in your house that best describe
balance and proportion. You can use crayons to make your artwork more attractive.
This is one fruitful day children; I hope you have learned something today. Goodbye class
and see you next meeting.
