Detailed Lesson Plan in Math 3

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the pupils should be able to:
a. identify symmetry and line of symmetry in a given shape and real world
examples;
b. show appreciation on the importance of symmetry;
c. complete the missing half of a symmetrical object by applying their
understanding of symmetry.

II. Subject Matter

Topic: "Symmetry"

Materials: Pictures, cut-outs, flashcards, visual aids
Values Infused: Cooperation and Appreciation

III. Procedure

Teacher’s Activity Learner’s Activity

A. Preliminaries
A.1 Prayer

To start our day, let's all stand and pray. (pupils are praying)

A.2 Greetings

-Good Morning Class! -Good Morning Teacher!

A.3 Checking of Attendance

-Who is absent for today? -None teacher!

A.4 Review

A.5 Motivation

--Before we start, I have a friend. Do you want

to meet my friend? -Yes teacher!

-My friend is SpongeBob! Do you know

SpongeBob? -Yes teacher!

-He is a very good friend. Say hi to him! -Hi SpongeBob!

-He is here because he needs our help.

He needs to find the half of his figures so that
he can put them to his house.
Do you want to help him? -Yes Teacher!

-To help him, I need 20 volunteers. We will

call this "Where's my other
Half?”. Volunteers will get one cut figure in
the box and will look for the
half of it. First two pairs who will finish the
game will have a prize.
Do you want a prize? -Yes Teacher!

-You are given 10 seconds to find your partner.

(pupils will look for the half of their figure)
Time starts now!

(after the game)

(will say the pairs won)
-Who won the game?
(give their answer)
-What did you do to find the half of your
figure?

-That's right! What figure was more (answer the question)

challenging to find?

(follow up question)

-SpongeBob is very glad because we helped

him find the halves of his
figures.

B. Developmental Activities
B.1 Presentation of the Lesson

-Now class do you have an idea about our -Yes teacher!

lesson for today?
(will answer)
-And what is it?

(If no one can guess, show puzzled letters)

-Our topic for today is all about symmetry. So

from the figures we got (give their own meaning)
from SpongeBob, what is symmetry?

-Very good! Let's give him/her an angel clap!

Do you know the angel -Yes teacher!
clap?
(will do the angel clap)
-So let's do the angel clap.

-When one half of a figure looks like the

mirror image of the other half,
it is symmetry.
(show the butterfly figure)

-And this is the line of symmetry that divides a

figure into two matching
-Line of Symmetry
sides.
What do you call this line?

-Very good!
We call this line vertical symmetry when it
goes up and down.
(show examples) (pupils will give their examples)

-Will you give me some shapes with a vertical

symmetry?

-Excellent!
When the line of symmetry goes left to right or
right to left, it is called
horizontal symmetry. -Horizontal Symmetry.

-What do you call when it goes from left to

right and right to left?

(ask examples)

-Now, look at the classroom and give other

(will give their examples)
examples of symmetry and
indicate where/what is the line of symmetry.
Example is the board, the line of symmetry can (will define symmetry)
be vertical or horizontal.

Since you can give examples of symmetry, (will define line of symmetry)
what now is symmetry?
-Yes teacher!
-How about line of symmetry?
(give their opinion)
-Does symmetry important?

-Then, why it is important?

-Yes! We must give importance of the things -Yes teacher!

around us.
-Do you understand our lesson?

B.2 Application -Share ideas and cooperate.

-Let us have our group work again. You will

work again as a group,
(each group will answer)
so what are the important things that you will
do?

-Very good!
(will give the activities for each group)

Group 1. Tell if the pictures show line of

symmetry. Write YES or NO

____1.

____2.

____3.

____4.

____5.

Group 2. Draw the second half of each

symmetrical figure.

1. 4.

2. 5.

3.

Group 3. Draw 5 figures that show line of

symmetry.
- When one half of a figure looks like the
B.3 Generalization mirror image of the other half,

-How do we know if a shape or a figure is

symmetrical?
-Line of symmetry teacher!
-Very Good!

-What do we call by the line in which when we

divide the shape or figure produced have the
same size and shape to each other?
(pupils are giving their opinions)
-Excellent!

-Now what is the importance of symmetry in

our daily lives?

-Very Good Class!

IV. Evaluation

Draw a smiley face on the blank if the lines indicate the line of symmetry, and sad face if
not.

_______1. _______4.

______2. _______5.

______3.

Write SYMMETRY if the figure is symmetry. If not, draw it again on the blank and put the
correct line of symmetry.

______________6. _____________9.
_____________7. _____________10.

_____________8.

(Product) Complete me!

For 5 points, complete the figure below.

V. Assignment: Draw/cut (from magazines etc.) 5 pictures of the things found in your home that
show line of symmetry. Paste them in a short bond paper.
