Chapter 21
Ship dimensions
21.1. General
The following ship definitions are used in the design of ports and harbours:
g Deadweight tonnage (DWT): the carrying capacity of the ship, namely the total weight of cargo,
fuels, freshwater, etc.
g Gross registered tonnage (GRT): the total internal capacity of the ship divided by 100 ft3 or
2.83 m3, depending on the application of relevant laws and regulations.
g Displacement tonnage (DT): the total weight or mass of the ship is obtained by multiplying the
volume of water displaced by the ship by the density of the water. The DWT for mixed-cargo
and bulk-cargo ships is roughly equal to 1.2–1.4 times the DWT and equal to 2.0 times the gross
registered tonnage. For passenger ships, the displacement tonnage is roughly equal to 1.0 times
the gross registered tonnage.
The displacement of a ship is therefore the product of the length between perpendiculars (perps),
the beam, the draft, the block coefficient and the density of the water. The block coefficient is
the ratio between the volume of the wetted portion of the ship’s hull (the displacement) and the
volume of the enclosing block (length between the perps × the beam × the draft).
The displacement light varies from about 15–25% of the displacement fully loaded. The
displacement light (i.e. the ship without ballast or any load) should for safety reasons only occur
when the ship is moored in a dock or at a shipyard for fitting-out or repair.
The ballast condition is the minimum weight or ballast that a ship has to carry for safe
manoeuvring stability. For example, having discharged all oil cargo, the oil tanker has to
increase its weight by taking in seawater as ballast to increase the draft in order to obtain the
necessary safe manoeuvring stability. The ballast displacement is about 30–50% of the
displacement fully loaded, depending on the weather conditions.
g Air draught: the maximum distance from the water level to the highest point of the ship at the
prevailing draft (Figure 21.1).
g Scantling draught: the draft for which the structural strength of the ship has been designed.
g Designed draught: the draft on which the fundamental design parameters of the ship are based.
g Trim: the difference between the aft and the forward draft.
g Bow to centre manifold/stern to centre manifold: the distance from the extreme point of the bow
or stern to the manifold centreline for tankers.
The definitions of a ship’s overall dimensions (length, draught, etc.) are illustrated in Figure 21.2.

indicator for a ship’s dimensions. For important calculations, the actual dimensions of the ships that
will call at the berth or harbour should be used.

Figure 21.10 shows data from the British standard BS 6349-1 for the length and the longitudinal
projected areas of container ships in loaded and ballasted conditions, compared with general approxi-
mately lateral projected wind area data for container ships with and without containers on the deck
shown in the table below the figure.
The approximately lateral projected wind and current areas above and below sea level for some LPG
and LNG tankers in fully loaded and ballast-loaded conditions are shown in the following table.

LNG carriers with a spherical containment system (Moss-Rosenberg) will have proportionately higher
windage than those with a prismatic/membrane containment system, and vessels in ballast have rela-
tively more windage than laden vessels because of the reduction in draught. Consequently, while all
ships will be affected by the wind conditions, LNG carriers with spherical tanks and vessels in ballast
will be more sensitive to the wind than laden vessels or those with membrane tanks. Figures 21.11 and
21.12 show the different tankers in question.

As a useful rule of thumb, the following approximate formula gives the fully loaded draught of cargo
ships and bulk carriers in meters:
DWT
Fully loaded draught = +5
1000
The formula will give the fully loaded draught to within 1 m for general cargo ships and dry- and liquid-
bulk carriers over the range 5000–400 000 DWT.
As an example of the use of Figure 21.13, the following approximate values provide a rough indicator
for a 50 000 DWT oil tanker:
Laterally projected area above sea level fully loaded = 4.964 × 50 0000.522 = 1408 m2
530
Ship dimensions
When designing harbours and berth facilities including the fender design, the design vessel should be
the largest ship expected to berth. The data in the tables below are from Akakura and Takahashi
(1998), Technical Note of the Ports and Harbour Research Institute, No. 911, and the Port and Harbour
Bureau of Ministry of Transport, Japan. The tables show the 50, 75, 90 and 95% confidence limits.
LOA is the ship’s overall length, LBP is the length between perps, B is the beam and D is the moulded
depth.

21.4. Recommendations
As can be seen from the different tables in Section 21.2, the beam, the overall length and the draft may
vary, depending on the country of origin of the ship and the ship’s construction. The ship’s dimensions
may vary by as much as +10–15% between different sources. For important calculations and if the
actual design ship’s dimensions are not known, use of the information given in Section 21.3 from Japan
is recommended.
