CAMPYLOBACTER

• C. jejuni and C. coli

• curved or S-shaped gram-negative rods

• oxidase positive, catalase positive, motile, and microaerophilic, and some species may be
selectively isolated at 42 C

• They also require a selective medium for isolation from stool specimens, made of
Brucella agar, sheep blood, and a combination of antimicrobials: vancomycin, bacitracin,
cephalothin, amphotericin B, trimethoprim, and polymyxin B.

• Skirrow’s medium and CAMPY-CVA are examples of this type of medium.

Campylobacter

Prepare a smear and Gram stain. Observe the microscopic morphology.
