D.Explain
This morning we are going to define what is
word problems and on how we solved word
problems using addition.

Word problem in mathematics is a

mathematical question written as one
sentence or more that requires children to
apply their mathematical knowledge to a
‘real-life’ scenario.

Using the steps in solving a word problem,

take a look on how solve a problem. (reading the problem)

The following are the steps in solving word

problem.

1. What is asked?
2. What is the given?
3. What is the word clue?
4. What fundamental operation are How many eggs did they
going to use? gather in all?
5. What is the number sentence?
6. Solution.
7. Final answer.
They gathered 2 509 eggs in
January and 3 488 eggs in
February.
From the given word problem earlier, we are
going to follow the steps to formally came to
the true and final answer.
The phrase how may?
Please read the question.

Jose and Nilo helped their family in their

poultry farm. They gathered 2 509 eggs in
January and 3 488 eggs in February. How
many eggs did they gather in all? Addition

corresponding number on the board)

What is asked?

What is being asked in the problem?

2 509
Next, What is the given?

What is the information given in the 3 488

problem?

How about? What is the word clue?

Is there specific word from the problem that

Downloaded by Shyn Mae (rocamorashynmae@gmail.com)

gave you a hint.

What fundamental operation are going to

use?

What do you think? What operation can we

use to solve the problems? Is it addition,
subtraction, multiplication or division?
4 997

What the number sentence?

Take a look in what is given.

This is the way on how you write number

sentence so listen carefully.

First, how many eggs are harvested in

January?

How about February?

2 509 + 3 488= N

We are still finding the answer so leave it

there.

Next, we came up from the solution. 4 997 eggs

2 509
+ 3 488

What is the answer?

2 509
+ 3 488
5 997

Downloaded by Shyn Mae (rocamorashynmae@gmail.com)

What is the final answer
What is the total income?

Another example. Monday = 3 415

Tuesday= 2 203
Wednesday= 5 184
Let’s take a look in the daily income of school
canteen in just three days. What do you think is
the total income? Total income.

Day Income The word clue in the problem

Monday Php. 3415 is total income.
Tuesday Php. 2203
Wednesday Php. 5184
3 415+2 203+ 5 184=N

What is asked? (Writing on the board)

How about? What is given? 3 415

2 203
5 184
10 802

What is the word clue? 10 802 is the total income.

Try to answer in a complete sentence.
