The purpose of this report is to explore, in non-technical language, what engineering is all about.
The central message is that engineering is intimately part of who and what we are. We will
explore the role of engineering in the modern world through the story of its history and
relationships with art, craft, science, and technology. We will see how engineers utilize natural
phenomena to embrace human needs. The story continues – so we look at some of the
contributions engineers will have to make in the future in order to sustain and promote human
well-being.

ABSTRACT
The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a skills training programs designed
to expose and prepare students of universities and other tertiary institutions for the Industrial
work situation they are likely to meet after graduation. The scheme is aimed at bridging the
existing gap between theory and practice of Sciences, Agriculture, Medical Sciences (including
Nursing), Engineering and Technology, Management, and Information and Communication
Technology and other professional educational programs in the Nigerian tertiary institutions. In
the department of marine engineering, students are exposed to marine machinery systems which
are found in boats, ships , offshore platforms and other marine environments including the main
propulsion systems (prime movers like diesel engines, steam turbine or gas turbines with their
propeller shafts, gearboxes and propellers ) as well as the auxiliary units (Generators, pumps,
air compressors, heat exchangers, lube oil and fuel oil purifiers, heaters , fresh water generators
etc .) with the task of maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, design, inspection, excellent
operation of these systems.
