Writing with your audience in mind informs the principles in the rest of the book + determines two other
qualities of your writing: your register and your tone
R = describes how the audience will receive said writing
(1) Informal → used with close relatives, conversational and often emotional
Establishes familiarity between reader and writer
Small doses can transmit spirit and enthusiasm
Uses rhetorical questions, phrasal verbs and anthropomorphisms
(2) Popular → typical of popular science magazines written for a broad audience
Often aim to tell a story with few technical terms as well as being easily read
(3) Conventional → characteristic of written journal articles, theses and proposals for specialized audience
Style to aim for when writing academic essays or final grade theses
Formal, yet still clear w/identifiable characters, active verbs and has many technical terms
(4) Abstract → unclear, wordy, pompous and dull register and is extremely scientific
Element of storytelling is completely gone and consists mostly of verbs in the passive voice
Way more technical terms, long strings of nouns and usually only the verb “to be” can be identified
T = the writer’s attitude towards himself, his subject and his audience
For scientific writing use neutral, for others use persuasive since it projects confidence
Avoid the use of modal auxiliaries in order to assert dominance (stop)
Es la asociación de dos o más verbos que transmiten una única idea verbal → unidad sintáctica indisociable
El verbo en forma no personal nunca funciona como complemento de la primera forma verbal
Esto significa que el infinitivo no se puede conmutar por eso/esto/lo, ni los gerundios por así
▪ Ej.: Juan debe venir a las diez // *Juan debe esto a las diez.
El verbo principal conserva su significado plenamente → no es forma auxiliar c/valores
