What is Passion Project?

● Passion Project is an opportunity for you to apply what you have learned!
● To help you decide where to base your proposal, you may want to ask yourself about these questions:
1. What kind of existing product would I like to modify its material or properties to improve its
performance and/or manufacturability?

Ex: Glass Windows and Panels in buildings

Proposal: Make them a Transparent Solar Panels

Ex: Shoes Sole made using Mould

Proposal: 3D Printed Shoes

2. What environmental issues so prevalent today that needs to be addressed through the aid of material
science and engineering?

Ex: Our high dependence in the use of plastic.

Solution: Plates made from sugarcane - INDIA

Solution: Water container made from biodegradable material -Seaweed

● As you decide, choose carefully a learning goal that is relevant and meaningful to you; something that will
make you or the world better in some way.
● In this project, you will take complete ownership of your learning. YOU get to pick what you want to focus
more on, how you study it, keep track of what you’ve been learning, reflect on your progress, and how will
you present your ideas.

Remember that science is all about trial and error and improvement process. So be ready to try and be
courageous to try once again when you fail!

Because in Material Science and Engineering, there is no such thing as small science, your proposal could
be the next amazing thing that will revolutionize the future!

Here are the guidelines for your presentation:

A. Introduction:
1. Tell us what inspired you to propose your new material.

B. Technical Content:
Discuss the details of your proposal in terms of:
1. General characteristics and properties of the old material
2. Problems you saw that could be improved to the old material (You may include at least one
related study to back it up.)
3. Define the specifications, properties and characteristics of your proposed new material (Try to be
detailed as much as you can, you may include related studies if there are. You may also specify
how do you perceive it is going to be manufactured and developed. Provide sample design or any
graphical representation of your proposed new material.)

C. Conclusion:
1. Tell us the significance of your proposal and how would you think it will improve the product,
the use of it and/or its manufacturability.
2. Summarize and provide a parting word.

D. Presentation:
1. Be creative in your presentation. You may use all the resources available to you in making your
presentation.
2. Recorded presentation must be at least 15mins. but not more than 45mins.
