None Teacher!
That is good to hear!

Review

Okay class, before we proceed to our new

lesson, let’s have a brief review of our past
lesson.

Identify the place value.

I have here decimal number 54.369 now
what is the place value of number 3 in the
given? Tenths, Teacher!

Okay very good! How about the place value

of number 9? Thousandths, Teacher!

How about the place value of number 6? Hundredths, Teacher!

Okay very good class, You really understood

our past lesson.

Drill

(Using flashcards)
Rounding of whole numbers

5. 80 000

Motivation
Do you want to play class?
Yes, teacher
I have prepared a game. This game is called
Math quizbee.

I will divide you into three groups. Please

count from 1-3
(Students will count from 1-3)
Kindly proceed to your assigned group.
(Students will go to their assigned group)
I have an illustration boards here where you
can write the decimal numbers I’ll be
reading.
The first group to raise their board with
correct answer will receive a point.
And the group who gets the most correct
answers wins.
Do you understand class?
Yes, teacher!

Presentation

Okay everybody please read.

James climb a 483-meter hill. If there are
1000 meters in 1 kilometer, what part of the
hill did Luis climb? Round to the nearest
hundredths. (Students will read)
James climb a 483-meter hill. If there are
1000 meters in 1 kilometer, what part of the
hill did Luis climb? Round to the nearest
hundredths.

Discussion

To know the part of the hill Luis climb.

Change meter to kilometer, (1000 m=1 km)
483/ 1000
=0.483
Rounding off using number line.

Where 0.483 is nearer? Is it nearer to 0.480

or 0.490?
0.483 is nearer to 0.480
Okay very good!
From the diagram, it is easy to see that 0.483
is nearer to 0.480 than 0.490. So, 0,483 is
rounded to 0.480.
Now, let us try to round 0.483 to the nearest
hundredths and thousandths.

Class kindly read this.

(Students will read)
Rules to be followed when rounding decimal
numbers.
-Determine the rounding place.
-Look at the digit at its right. If it is less than
5 round down. If it is 5 or more, round up.
-Drop all the digit/s to its right.
To round decimals
-Determine the rounding place.
-Look at the digit at its right. If it is less than
5 round down. If it is 5 or more, round up.
-Drop all the digit/s to its right.
Okay very good, you should always
remember that in rounding decimals.

Next, I will teach you to round decimals to

the nearest hundredths and thousandths
using a place value chart.

We have here the 12.193 decimal number. To

round 12.193 to the nearest hundredths
what is the first step we were going to do?

What is the next step? Determine the rounding place which is

hundredths.

Okay very good! Look at the digit at its right. If it is less than 5
If the number to the right is 0,1,2,3,4, retain round down. If it is 5 or more, round up.
the digit in rounding place, and drop all the
number after the rounding place.
So, the answer is 12.19 because 3 is less than
5.
Do you understand class?

Now, let’s proceed to the other example.

Yes, teacher!

We have here 8.4356 decimal number. The

first thing we need to do is to determine the
rounding place which is thousandths.
What is the digit in the thousandths place?
What digit is in the right of 5?
5 teacher!
Okay very good!
What we will do if the digit is more than 5? 6 teacher!
Round down or round up?

What do you think is the answer? And why?

Round up, teacher!

The answer is 8.436, because the digit that

is in the thousandth place is 5 and the right
of it is 6. That’s why I rounded it up and
dropped all the numbers after the rounding
place, like what is in the rules to be followed
Okay very good answer! when rounding decimals.
Application
To test your ability. I will divide you in three
groups. Please count from 1-3

Kindly, proceed to your assigned group

(The students will count from 1-3)

I have here 5 flash cards that has a decimal (The students will go to their assigned
numbers. All you have to do is to round to group)
the nearest hundredths and thousandths and
you will write it in the illustration board.
The first group to raise their board with
correct answers will receive a point.
And the group who gets the most correct
answers wins.
