Sl. No. Chapter Definitions

Respiration: A series of chemical reactions that takes place in
1. Respiration all living cells, in which energy is released from glucose
Respiratory system: The lungs and other organs that help
oxygen to enter the body and carbon dioxide to leave it
Aerobic Respiration: Chemical reactions inside cells, where
oxygen is used to break down glucose and release energy
Larynx: Voice box, it is found at the top of the trachea, and
contains strong cords that vibrate to make sounds when we
speak
Bronchus: One of the two tubes that branch from the trachea,
and which carry air into the lungs
Bronchiole: one of the small tubes leading into the lungs from
bronchus
Gas exchange: The movement of gases into and out of
organisms
Hemoglobin: The red pigment in the red blood cells
Breathing: Using muscles to make movements that cause air
to move in and out of the lungs
Diffusion: The random movement of particles from an area of
high concentration to an area of lower concentration
Expired air: The air that we breathe out
Limewater: a solution of calcium hydroxide that goes cloudy
when mixed with carbon dioxide
Pathogens: Microorganisms like bacteria and viruses, that
cause diseases
White blood cells: Blood cells that help to protect against
pathogens
Oxyhemoglobin: Hemoglobin that is combined with oxygen
Antibodies: Chemicals produced by WBCs, which kill
pathogens

2. Ecosystems Adaptations: Features of organisms that help them to live and
reproduce in their habitat
Ecology: the study of organisms in their natural environment
Ecosystem: A network of interactions between all the living organisms
in a habitat, and the non-living things around them
Nocturnal: Those who remain active at night
Pollen: Tiny grains made by flowers, which contain male gametes
Habitat: A place where an organism lives
Nectar: A sugary liquid made by flowers, to attract insects for
pollination
Food webs: A diagram showing many interconnected food chains
