CHAPTER 1

옛날 어느 마을에 착한 나무꾼이 살았다.

One day there lived a kind woodcutter in a village.
외로운 나무꾼은 빨리 결혼하고 싶었다.
The lonely woodcutter wanted to marry quickly.

나무꾼은 매일 산으로 나무를 하러 갔다.

Every day the woodcutter went to the mountain to cut wood.
어느 날 나무꾼이 산에서 나무를 하고 있었다.
One day on the mountain he was cutting wood.
갑자기 나무꾼의 앞으로 노루 한 마리가 달려왔다.
Suddenly a deer came in front of him.
노루는 나무꾼에게 다급하게 말했다.
The deer urgently said to the woodcutter
"도와주세요. 포수가 저를 죽이려고 해요.
"Please help me. A hunter is trying to kill me.
제발 저를 살려 주세요."
Please save me from him."
나무꾼은 노루를 얼른 나뭇가지와 풀로 덮었다.
The woodcutter covered the deer with branches and grass.
잠시 후 포수가 나무꾼 앞으로 뛰어왔다.
After a while, a hunter ran up to the woodcutter.
포수는 사나운 표정으로 나무꾼에게 노루를 보았느냐고 물었다.
The hunter asked with a wild expression if the woodcutter had
seen the deer.
나무꾼은 산길을 가리키며 말했다.
The woodcutter pointed at the mountain road and spoke.
"노루가 저쪽으로 뛰어갔습니다."
"The deer ran that way."
포수는 나무꾼이 가리킨 쪽으로 뛰어갔다.
The hunter ran where the woodcutter pointed.
포수가 사라지자 나무꾼은 노루에게 나오라고 했다.
When the hunter had disappeared, the woodcutter told the deer
to come out.
노루는 눈물을 흘리며 나무꾼에게 말했다.
The deer wept and spoke to the woodcutter.
"살려 주셔서 고맙습니다.
"Thank for saving my life.

저를 살려 주셨으니까 은혜를 갚겠습니다.

Because you have saved my life, I owe you a debt.
예쁜 아내를 얻을 수 있는 방법을 알려 드릴게요."
I will tell you how to get you a pretty wife."
노루는 나무꾼에게 선녀들이 목욕하러 오는 장소를 알려 주었다.
The deer told the woodcutter about a place where the fairies
bathed.
그 장소는 숲 속에 있는 연못이었다.
That place was a pond in the woods.
노루는 선녀의 날개를 한 벌 감추라고 했다.
The deer told him to hide a pair of the fairy's robed wings.
그리고 그 날개의 주인과 결혼하라고 했다.
And, to marry whoever owns the robed wings.
날개옷이 없는 선녀는 하늘로 가지 못하기 때문이었다.
Because without their robed wings the fairies cannot go to the sky.
말을 마친 노루는 숲 속으로 뛰어가다가 갑자기 돌아서서 말했다.
When it had finished speaking, the deer ran to the forest and
suddenly turned and spoke.
"참! 그런데 약속할 것이 있어요.
"Wait! By the way, there is a promise.
아이를 세 명 낳을 때까지 날개옷을 돌려주지 마세요.
Do not give the robed wings back until she has had 3 children.
만약 그 전에 돌려주면, 가족과 헤어지게 됩니다."
If you give them back before then, your family will be split up."
나무꾼은 노루에게 약속을 꼭 지키겠다고 했다.
CHAPTER 2

그날 밤 나무꾼은 노루가 가르쳐 준 연못으로 갔다.

One night the woodcutter went to the pond that the deer taught
him about.

하늘에는 달이 떠서 세상이 환했다.

The moon in the sky made everywhere bright.

나무꾼은 연못 가까이로 조용히 다가갔다.

The woodcutter went quietly closer and closer to the pond.

그리고 큰 바위 뒤에 숨어서 선녀들이 하늘에서 내려오기를 기다렸다.

And, hiding behind a big stone, he waited for the fairies to come
down from the sky.

잠시 후 하늘에서 밝은 빛이 보이고 선녀들이 내려왔다.

After a while, he could see a bright light from the sky and the
fairies came down.

세 명의 선녀는 날개 모양의 아름다운 옷을 입고 있었다.

Three fairies were wearing beautiful robed wings.

선녀들은 속옷과 날개옷을 벗고 물속으로 들어갔다.

The fairies took off their underwear and robed wings, and went
into the water.

선녀들은 보통 때처럼 연못에서 즐겁게 목욕을 했다.

As normal, the fairies had a fun bath in the pond.

선녀들은 웃고 장난을 치느라 나무꾼이 가까이 다가가도 알지 못했다.

The fairies laughed and joked so they didn’t notice that the
woodcutter was coming closer.

나무꾼은 날개옷 하나를 몰래 감추었다.

The woodcutter quietly hid one pair of the robed wings.

그리고 다시 바위 뒤로 돌아왔다.

And again he returned behind the rock.

선녀들은 목욕을 끝내고 옷을 찾아서 입었다.

The fairies finished their bath and found their clothes and put
them on.

그런데 선녀 한 명의 날개옷이 없었다.

But one fairy had no robed wings.

처음에는 장난이라고 생각했던 다른 선녀들도 깜짝 놀랐다.

The other fairies were surprised, and thought she was joking at
first.

모두가 함께 찾았지만 날개옷은 보이지 않았다.

Everyone together searched but there were no robed wings to be

seen.

시간이 많이 지나서 새벽이 되었다.

A lot of time passed and dawn came.

그러자 다른 선녀들이 날개옷을 잃어버린 선녀에게 말했다.

The other fairies spoke to the fairy who lost her robed wings.

"우리는 아침이 되기 전에 하늘로 올라가야 해."

"We have to go up to the sky before morning"

"정말 미안해. 닭이 울면 우리도 못 돌아가."

"I’m really sorry. When the chicken crows, we also cannot return."

결국 두 선녀는 하늘로 올라가고, 선녀 한 명만 남았다.

Ultimately the two fairies returned to the sky, and just one fairy
was left.

날개옷을 잃어버린 선녀는 연못가에 앉아서 눈물만 흘리고 있었다.

CHAPTER 3

울고 있는 선녀에게 나무꾼이 다가가서 말했다.

The woodcutter came close to the crying fairy and spoke.

"왜 여기에서 울고 있어요?"

"Why are you crying here?"

선녀는 깜짝 놀라며 나무꾼을 쳐다보았다.

The fairy was suddenly surprised and stared at the woodcutter.

나무꾼이 선녀에게 말했다.

The woodcutter spoke to the fairy.

"놀라게 해서 미안해요.

Sorry for surprising you.

제가 도와 드릴 일이 있나요?"

Can I help you?"

선녀는 나무꾼의 부드러운 말투에 마음을 놓으며 말했다.

The fairy spoke to the woodcutter with a soft tone.

"제 옷을 잃어버렸어요.

I’ve lost my clothes.

날개 모양의 아름다운 옷을 보셨어요?"

Have you seen beautiful clothes in the shape of wings?"

나무꾼은 모른다고 말했다.

The woodcutter said he didn’t know.

그리고 갈 곳이 없으면 자기 집으로 가자고 했다.

He said if she had no place to go, she could come home with him.

선녀는 하늘로 갈 수 없기 때문에 갈 곳이 없었다.

Because the fairy couldn’t go to the sky, she had nowhere to go.

선녀는 나무꾼에게 함께 가겠다고 했다.

The fairy said to the woodcutter that it would be good to go

together.

선녀는 정말 아름다웠다.

The fairy was really beautiful.

함께 집으로 온 나무꾼과 선녀는 부부가 되었다.

The woodcutter and fairy who came home together became a

couple.

나무꾼은 예쁜 아내를 얻게 되었다.

The woodcutter got a beautiful wife.

나무꾼은 소원이 이루어져서 정말 기뻤다.

The woodcutter's wish came true, so he was really pleased.

그리고 얼마 뒤에는 예쁜 아이도 얻었다.

And after some time passed, he had some beautiful children, too.

나무꾼은 매일 열심히 일을 했다.

The woodcutter worked hard every day.

선녀는 집안일을 하고 아이를 돌보았다.

The fairy did the housework and cared for the children.

나무꾼과 선녀는 행복하게 살았다.

CHAPTER 4

그런데 어느 날부터 선녀의 얼굴에 슬픈 표정이 보이기 시작했다.

Then from one day the fairy started showing a sad expression on
her face.

나무꾼은 걱정하며 말했다.

The woodcutter was worried so he said.

"여보, 어디가 아파요?"

"Darling, are you sick?"

선녀는 고개를 저으며 괜찮다고 했다.

The fairy shook her head and said she was fine.

하지만 선녀는 밥도 먹지 않고 눈물까지 흘렸다.

But the fairy also wouldn’t eat and even started crying.

"여보, 왜 울어요? 이유를 말해 봐요."

"Darling why are you crying? Tell me the reason."

"하늘에서 살던 때가 생각나요.

I am thinking about when I lived in the sky.

잠깐이라도 하늘로 갈 수 있다면 얼마나 좋을까요?

Wouldn’t it be nice if I could go to the sky for even a moment?

날개옷만 있으면 얼른 다녀올 거예요."

If I had my robed wings I would return quickly."

나무꾼은 아무 말도 못 했다.

The woodcutter couldn’t say anything.

아이를 셋 낳을 때까지 날개옷을 주지 않겠다고 노루와 약속했기 때문이었다.

Because of the promise he made with the deer, he couldn’t give the
robed wings back until he had 3 children.

하지만 선녀가 병이 날 것 같았다.

But it seemed like the fairy was going to be seriously unwell.

나무꾼은 결국 선녀에게 모든 것을 털어놓기로 했다.

The woodcutter finally decided to confess everything to the fairy.

선녀는 아무 말도 하지 않고 나무꾼의 이야기를 들었다.

The fairy couldn’t say anything and listened to the woodcutter's

story.

나무꾼은 선녀에게 하늘로 갔다가 정말 돌아올 거냐고 물었다.

The woodcutter asked the fairy if she would really return if she
went to the sky.

선녀는 고개를 끄덕이며 꼭 돌아오겠다고 했다.

The fairy nodded her head and said that she would definitely
return.

Culture Note

Traditional Korean fairies have wings (날개) that are part of their
clothing (옷). These are called 날개옷. Fairies are unable to fly
without them.

In many versions of this story, the woodcutter and the fairy are
separated forever, as the woodcutter is unable to go to Heaven. In
some versions, the woodcutter is turned into a rooster who spends
the rest of his life crowing towards Heaven.
