CHAPTER 1

옛날 어느 할아버지와 할머니가 살고 있었다.

Once upon a time, there lived an old man and an old woman.
할아버지와 할머니에게는 자식이 없었다.
The old man and the old woman had no children.
그 대신에 개 한 마리와 고양이 한 마리를 자식처럼 사랑하며 키웠다.
Instead, they raised a dog and a cat and loved them like their
own children.
할아버지는 매일 강에서 낚시를 했다.
Every day the old man went fishing in the river.
어느 날 할아버지가 낚싯대를 가지고 강으로 갔다.
One day the old man took his fishing rod to the river.
점심때가 되었는데 물고기가 한 마리도 잡히지 않았다.
Although it was lunchtime, he hadn't even caught a single fish.
"이상하다. 물고기가 한 마리도 없네."
"That's strange. There's not even a single fish."
할아버지는 낚싯대를 거두려고 일어났다.
The old man was about to stand up to collect his fishing rod.
그때 낚싯줄이 움직였다.
Then the fishing line moved.
할아버지는 빨리 낚싯대를 잡아당겼다.

The old man quickly pulled in the rod.

그 순간 할아버지는 앞을 볼 수가 없었다.
At that moment the old man couldn't see in front of him.
낚시에 걸린 것은 황금 잉어였다.
Hanging on the fishing rod was a golden carp.
그런데 황금 잉어를 자세히 들여다보던 할아버지는 깜짝 놀랐다.
Then he took a close look at the golden carp and he was
surprised.
잉어의 눈에서 눈물이 흐르고 있었기 때문이었다.
It was because the carp had tears pouring from his eyes.
할아버지는 잉어를 강물에 놓아주었다.
The old man released the carp into the river.
할아버지는 잉어에게 말했다.
The old man spoke to the carp.
"말도 못하는 네가 눈물을 흘리니까 잡지 못하겠구나.
"Although you cannot speak, because you cried I couldn't
catch you.
멀리멀리 잘 가라. 다시는 잡히지 마라."
Go far, far away. Don't get caught again."
할아버지는 집으로 돌아왔다.

CHAPTER 2

다음 날도 할아버지는 낚시를 하러 강으로 갔다.

The next day too, the old man went fishing at the river.

갑자기 강에서 어떤 사람이 나왔다.

Suddenly someone came by on the river.

그는 놀란 할아버지에게 인사를 하며 말했다.

The person bowed to the surprised old man and spoke to him.

"저는 용궁에서 온 용왕님의 신하입니다.

"I serve the Dragon King in the Dragon Palace.

어제 황금 잉어 한 마리를 놓아주셨지요?

Did you release a golden carp yesterday?

그 잉어는 용왕님의 아들이었습니다.

That carp was the Dragon King's son.

그래서 용왕님께서 할아버지를 용궁에 모시고 싶어 합니다."

So the Dragon King would like to you to go to the Dragon

Palace."

할아버지는 놀랍기도 하고 신기하기도 했다.

The old man was surprised and amazed.

그리고 용왕의 신하와 함께 거북의 등에 올라탔다.

And he rode on a turtle's back with the Dragon King's servant.

용궁에 도착하자 금색 옷을 입은 왕자가 할아버지를 마중하러 나왔다.

The Dragon Prince, who wore gold clothing, came out to meet
them when they arrived at the Dragon Palace.

"감사합니다. 저를 살려 주신 은혜를 꼭 갚고 싶습니다. 어서

들어가시지요."

"Thank you. You gave me life so I want to repay the favor.

Come inside."

할아버지를 위해 맛있는 음식을 많이 차려 놓았다.

A lot of delicious food was prepared for the old man.

하지만 할머니가 얼마나 걱정을 하고 있을지 생각했다.

But the old man thought about how worried the old woman
was.

그래서 할아버지는 집에 가야겠다고 왕자에게 말했다.

So the old man told the Dragon Prince that he wanted to go

home.

"그런데 가시기 전에 꼭 제 아버지를 만나세요.

"Then, before you go, I want you to meet my father.

아버지께서 원하는 것을 물으시면 꼭 푸른 구슬을 달라고 하세요."

When he asks what you want, ask him for a blue bead."

할아버지는 용왕에게 왕자가 시킨 대로 말했다.

The old man did as the Dragon Prince told him.

용왕은 푸른 구슬을 주면서 말했다.

The Dragon King spoke as he gave the blue bead.

"말만 하면 뭐든지 갖게 해 주는 구슬이지요."

"Whatever you say, the bead will give."

할아버지는 집에 달려가 할머니를 안았다.

The old man returned home and hugged the old woman.

두 사람은 구슬에게 소원을 말해 보기로 했다.

The two people planned to try to say their wish to the bead.

"푸른 구슬아! 우리에게 멋진 집을 주겠니?"

"A blue bead! Will it give us a nice house?"

말이 끝나자 작고 헌 집이 큰 새 집으로 바뀌었다.

As soon as they finished talking, the small house changed

into a large, new house.

두 사람은 전보다 항상 행복해졌다.

CHAPTER 3

욕심쟁이 할머니가 이 소식을 들었다.

A greedy old woman heard the news.

푸른 구슬을 빼앗아고 싶었다.

She wanted to take the blue bead.

욕심쟁이 할머니는 장사꾼으로 꾸몄다.

The greedy old woman dressed as a merchant.

그리고 착한 할머니의 집으로 갔다.

And she went to the kind old woman's house.

"누구 계세요? 물건 좀 사세요.

"Who lives here? Please buy something.

모든 물건이 다 있답니다.

I have everything. "

착한 할머니는 욕심쟁이 할머니에게 안으로 들어오라고 했다.

The kind old woman invited the greedy old woman inside.

"그런데 신기한 푸른 구슬이 정말 있나요?

"By the way, do you really have an amazing blue bead?"

욕심쟁이 할머니가 물었다.

The greedy old woman asked

"한 번만 봤으면 좋겠어요!"

"It would be good to see it one time!"

착한 할머니는 푸른 구슬을 보여 주었다.

The kind old lady showed the blue bead.

욕심쟁이 할머니는 주머니에서 몰래 똑같은 모양의 구슬을 꺼냈다.

The greedy old lady secretly took out a similar bead from her
pocket.

그리고 푸른 구슬과 가짜 구슬을 바꿨다.

And she swapped the blue bead with the fake bead.

욕심쟁이 할머니는 집으로 돌아왔다.

The greedy old woman returned home.

욕심쟁이 할머니는 원하던 대로 부자가 되었다.

As she wanted, the greedy old woman became rich.

착한 할머니와 할아버지는 다시 가난해졌다.

The kind old woman and man were again poor.

하지만 구슬을 다시 찾을 방법이 없었다.

But, there is no way to find the lost blue bead.

CHAPTER 4

할아버지와 할머니의 개와 고양이가 이것을 보았다.

The old man and old woman's dog and cat saw what
happened.

그래서 푸른 구슬을 찾아오기로 했다.

So they planned to find the blue bead.

개와 고양이는 욕심쟁이 할머니 집에 갔다.

The dog and cat went to the greedy old woman's house.

하지만 집 안으로 들어갈 수가 없었다.

But they could not go inside the house.

실망한 개와 고양이는 앉아 있었다.

The disappointed dog and cat sat.

그때 그들 앞으로 쥐 한 마리가 지나갔다.

Then a mouse passed by in front of them.

고양이는 갑자기 일어나 달려갔다.

The cat suddenly got up and ran.

그리고 앞의 임금 쥐를 발로 잡았다.

Then it caught the king mouse with its foot.

고양이는 쥐들에게 말했다.

The cat spoke to all the mice.

"임금을 살리고 싶으면 푸른 구슬을 찾아와라.

"If you want the king to live, find and bring me the blue bead."

쥐들은 서둘러 집 안으로 들어갔다.

The mice quickly ran into the house.

쥐들은 푸른 구슬이 들어 있는 주머니를 찾아왔다.

The mice found and brought back a bag of blue beads.

개와 고양이는 돌아가서 할머니와 할아버지에게 소식을 전하고 싶었다.

The dog and the cat wanted to tell the old woman and the old
man the news, so they went home.

개와 고양이는 강을 건너게 되었다.

The dog and the cat crossed the river.

고양이가 입에 주머니를 물었다.

The cat had the bag in its'mouth.

개는 주머니를 갑자기 궁금해졌다.

The dog suddenly became curious about the bag.

"구슬을 잘 가지고 있지?

"Are you carrying the bead well?"

너 왜 대답을 안 하니?"

Why aren't you answering me?"

개가 계속 졸라서 고양이는 화가 났다.

The dog continued to nag so that the cat became angry.

"입에 구슬을 물고 있는데 어떻게 말을 하니?"

"With the blue bead in my mouth how can I talk?"

그 순간 푸른 구슬은 강물로 빠졌다.

At that moment the blue bead fell into the river.

개와 고양이는 아쉬운 마음으로 강을 건넜다.

The dog and the cat crossed the river with regret.

강가에 도착한 개는 집에 가고 싶었다.

When they arrived at the riverbank, the dog wanted to go

home.

하지만 고양이는 이대로 돌아갈 수 없다고 했다.

CHAPTER 5

얼마 후 한 어부가 고양이에게 물고기 한 마리를 던져 주었다.

After a while, a fisherman threw a fish at the cat.

고양이는 물고기를 받아서 물었다.

The cat got the fish in his mouth.

그런데 물고기 속에 딱딱한 것이 있었다.

But there was something hard inside the fish.

그 속에는 자기가 찾던 푸른 구슬이 들어 있었다.

It contained the blue bead that he had been looking for.

고양이는 기뻐서 푸른 구슬을 물고 집으로 갔다.

The cat was pleased so he bit the blue bead and went home.

그리고 할머니와 할아버지 앞에 푸른 구슬을 놓았다.

And he put it in front of the old woman and the old man.

두 사람은 기뻐서 춤을 추었다.

The two people were happy so they danced.

할머니와 할아버지는 다시 부자가 되었다.

The old woman and old man again became rich.

그리고 고양이를 방 안에서 함께 살도록 했다.

And the cat lived with them inside the house.

개는 마당에서 살았다.

The dog lived in the garden.

개는 고양이가 몹시 부러웠다.

The dog was really jealous of the cat.

그때부터 개와 고양이는 만나기만 하면 서로 싸웠다.

Grammar Tip

~는데 is used with verbs or adjectives. It can mean "although,

while, when, but, because, so, as" depending on the context.

Example:

점심때가 되었는데 물고기가 한 마리도 잡히지 않았다.

Although it was lunchtime, he hadn't even caught a single fish.

~기로 하다 is used with verbs. It can mean "arranged, planned

to" and refers to fixed future plans.

Example:

두 사람은 구슬에게 소원을 말해 보기로 했다.

The two people planned to try to say their wish to the bead.

Culture Note

용왕 or Dragon King is an important character of Korean

folklore. The Dragon King is a god of rivers of the sea. He lives
underwater in the 용궁 (dragon palace). In some areas, Korean
people continue to hold rituals for the Dragon King to ask for
his protection.

In some versions of this story, the Dragon King gives a ring

which contains the Dragon Princess. She marries the (young)
man who received the ring.
