소금장수 작대기와 여우
One day he was following a mountain trail and got so
옛날 옛날에 소금장수가 이 동네 저 동네로 팔러 다녔어요. ‘지게’라는
도구에 커다란 소금 주머니를 얹어 등에 지고는 작대기로 디디고
다녔어요. 어느 날 산길을 따라가다가 너무 지쳐서 쉬려고 풀 숲에
몸을 눕혔어요.
그때 어디선가 아주 이상한 소리가 들려왔어요. “빠드득 빠드득
빠드득.” 소금장수는 조용히 소리가 나는 곳으로 살금살금 가서
살펴보았어요. 소리는 묘지에서 나고 있었어요.
빠드득빠드득. 그 소리는 꼬리가 아홉 개 달린 여우 한 마리가 해골
속을 긁어내는 소리였어요. 해골 속을 긁어내더니 여우는 그 해골을
머리에 써보았어요. “커억...너무 작구나.”
여우는 또 다른 해골을 꺼내서 속을 파내기 시작했어요. 빠드득빠드득
빠드득 빠드득. 여우는 또 해골을 머리에 써보았어요. 이번엔 해골이
너무 커서 헐렁거렸어요. 여우는 또 다른 해골을 꺼내서 속을 파내기
시작했어요. 빠드득 빠드득 빠드득 빠드득. 여우는 해골을 머리에
써보았어요. 딱 맞았어요.
해골을 여우 머리에 꽉 끼우자 여우는 수염 긴 할아버지로
변신했어요. 할아버지가 된 여우는 산을 내려가 동네로 갔어요.
소금장수는 너무 놀라 뒤를 조용히 쫓아갔어요.
A Salt Peddler and a Fox
Once upon a time there was this salt peddler who sold salt,
travelling town to town. He always carried a large bag of salt on
a tool called ‘Jigye’ on his back with a cane stick to support
himself.
tired so he lay down in the bushes to take some rest.
Then he heard a very weird sound, “Crunch crunch crunch.” The
peddler sneaked up to where the sound came from. The sound
was coming from a cemetery!
“Crunch crunch crunch!” It was the sound a fox with nine
tails was making to scrape out the inside of a skull. After
scraping a skull clean, the fox tried on the skull. “Grrrr……It
is too small.”
The fox began to scrape out another skull. Crunch crunch
crunch! The fox tried on the skull again. This time it was too
big. Then the fox began skull-scraping again. Crunch crunch
crunch! When the fox put on the third skull, it fit the fox
perfectly!
When the fox put on the skull nice and tightly, it changed
into an old man with a long beard. Now an old man, the fox
went down the mountain to a town. The salt peddler got so
surprised he followed the fox.
여우가 둔갑한 할아버지는 문이 활짝 열린 환갑 잔칫집으로 슥
들어가서 사람들과 인사를 했어요. “오랜만일세. 반가우이. 아이고
신수가 훤허십니다. 손자가 지난 달 장가를 가셨다고?.”
온 동네 사람들이 다 오는 큰 잔치라 소금장수도 환영 받으며
대청마루에서 밥상을 받았어요. 여우할아버지는 잔칫집 큰 방에 앉아
맛있는 음식을 먹으며 손님들과 즐겁게 이야기를 했어요. 소금장수는
그 할아버지가 여우란 걸 사람들에게 알려줘야 한다고 생각했어요.
소금장수는 주인집 큰 아들에게 살짝 다가가서 이야기했어요. “저기
앉은 수염 긴 노인은 사람이 아닙니다. 여우입니다. 저렇게 집안에
두시면 큰일납니다. 쫓아내세요.”
하지만 큰 아들은 소금장수의 말을 믿지 않았습니다. “무슨 말을 하는
겁니까. 우리집 손님이신데. 여우라니. 말씀이 지나치십니다. 술을 많이
드셨는가봅니다.”
“제발 제 말을 믿어주세요. 이 집안에 큰 변고가 생기면 어쩌시렵니까.
제발 저 노인에게 독한 술을 많이 먹여보세요.”
소금장수가 간절하게 말하자 큰 아들은 의심쩍으면서도 노인에게
독한 술을 자꾸 권했어요. “귀한 술입니다. 향도 좋지요? 한 잔 더
드세요.”
여우 할아버지는 주는 술을 자꾸자꾸 마시다가 꾸벅꾸벅 졸기
시작했어요.
The fox-turned-old-man went into a house where
someone’s sixtieth birthday feast was being held and
greeted people there. “Long time. Glad to see you, you
look well, did your grandson get married last month, I
heard?”
As the feast was open to everyone, the salt peddler was
welcomed in, too, and he sat at a table in the open living
room. In the meantime, the fox-turned-old-man sat in the
center room, eating and conversing with other guests. The
salt peddler thought he should let others know the old man
was a fox. So he approached the first son of the house and
whispered to him, “The old man with a long beard is not a
human. It is a fox. Bad things will happen if you keep the
animal in your house. Drive it out!”
The first son did not believe the peddler at first. “What are
you talking about? He is our guest! How can he be a fox?
You are going too far. You must be drunk!”
“Please, please, listen to me. I’m telling you the truth. What
if bad things happen to your household? Please give the old
man a lot of strong liquor.”
As the salt peddler anxiously begged, the first son did not
fully buy him, but he offered the old man very strong liquor.
“This liquor is very rare. How’s the aroma? Oh, have one
more glass!”
The fox-turned-old-man drank and drank and drank, and
finally he began to doze off.
“얏!” 그때 소금장수는 달려들어가 지게 작대기로 여우할아버지
머리를 세게 때렸습니다.
“뭐하는 짓이오? 당신 미쳤소?”사람들은 놀라서 소금장수를 붙잡고
화를 냈어요.
“저걸 보세요. 저건 여우입니다.” 소금장수가 소리쳤어요.
그때 막대기로 머리를 세게 맞은 여우 할아버지 머리에서 해골이
벗겨졌어요. 그러자 노인은 꼬리 아홉 달린 여우로 변했어요. 사람들은
놀라서 쓰러진 여우를 꽁꽁 묶었어요.
“감사합니다. 감사합니다.” 주인집 큰 아들과 환갑잔치를 하던
주인대감은 여러번 인사를 하고 소금장수의 소금을 다 사주고
덧붙여서 금덩이도 하나 사례로 주었습니다. 소금장수가 소금도 팔고
금덩이도 받고 기쁜 마음으로 빈 지게를 지고 가려는데 어떤 욕심
많은 사람이 소금장수를 불렀습니다. 그는 소금장수가 부자가 된 게
너무 부러웠어요.
“그런데 어떻게 그 노인이 여우인 걸 알았습니까?”
소금장수는 뭐라고 대답해도 사람들은 그 말을 믿기 어려울거라
생각했어요. 그래서 장난으로 작대기를 휘두르며 말했어요. “아 이
작대기가 여우를 알아보는 작대기이죠.”
그러자 욕심쟁이는 당장 그 막대기를 자기에게 팔라고 했어요.
“막대기를 사고싶으시다고요? 정말요?” 소금장수는 그 작대기를
비싸게 팔고는 멀리멀리 떠나버렸어요.
“Yip!” The peddler ran to the fox-turned-old-man and
began to beat his head with his cane stick.
“What are you doing? Are you crazy?” People got taken
aback and tried to stop the peddler.
“Look! This is a fox, not a human!” The peddler cried out.
At the very moment, a skull was rolled down from the head
of the old man, and the old man changed back into a fox
with nine tails. People got surprised and tied the fox all
over.
“How can I thank you!” The head of the house and his first
son said thank you to the peddler many times, bought off
all the salt and gave a piece of gold. The peddler was so
happy he had sold all the salt and even got some gold. He
started for his hometown with his empty Jigye. But a greedy
man stopped the peddler as he envied the peddler so
much.
“How did you find out the old man was a fox?” he asked.
The peddler thought people would not believe what had
actually happened, so he said, “Ah, this cane stick tells
foxes.”
Then the greedy man asked the peddler to sell the cane
stick to him.
“Do you want to buy this stick? Do you mean it?” So the
peddler sold the stick at a very high price and he left.
며칠 후, 욕심쟁이는 신이 나서 그 작대기를 들고 며칠 후 이웃 마을로
갔어요. 큰 잔치가 열리는 집으로 찾아갔어요. 그 곳에도 많은
손님들이 모여 있었어요. 욕심쟁이는 작대기를 들고 사람들을 휘휘
둘러보았어요. 하지만 누가 여우인지 알수가 없었어요. “이상하네.
때려보면 누가 여우인지 알 수 있는건가?”욕심쟁이는 손님들 중에서
여우 털같은 머리카락을 가진 사람 뒤로 가서 작대기로 머리를 팍
때렸어요.
“으앗...미친 놈이다.” 잔칫집 손님들은 놀라서 소리치고
욕심쟁이에게서 작대기를 빼았었어요.
욕심쟁이는 소리쳤어요. “여우라니깐 여우. 여우라고.”
작대기로 머리를 맞은 사람은 화가 나서 소리쳤어요. “저 미친놈을
작대기로 때려서 내쫓아라.”
욕심쟁이는 작대기로 쉼없이 맞고는 쫓겨났어요. 그리고 물론, 그 후로
다시는 그 소금장수는 그 동네로 오지 않았어요. 소금 장수가 어떻게
여우를 찾아냈는지는 아무도 몰라요.
The greedy man cried out,” It’s a fox!”
The man beaten up out of the blue yelled, “Beat up the
crazy man and drive him out!”
The greedy man was beaten all over and driven out. And, of
course, the salt peddler never visited the town again, so
nobody knew how the salt peddler had found out the fox.

A few days later, the greedy man happily went to a

neighboring town and found a house where a big feast was
being held. There were a lot of guests, too. The greedy man
was looking around the guests with the cane stick in his
hand, but he couldn’t tell which one was a fox.
“Hmmm….strange. Should I beat someone’s head to find
out?” So the greedy man came up to a man with hair like
fox’s and began to beat him up.
‘Eeeek, this man is crazy!” The guests ran to the scene and
took away the cane stick from the greedy man.
