CHAPTER 1

옛날 마을에 바보 총각이 살았다.

Once upon a time, a foolish bachelor lived in a village.
어머니는 아들을 많이 걱정했다.
His mother was very worried about him.
그래서, 어느 날 어머니가 바보 아들을 불렀다.
So, one day the mother called her foolish son.
"애야, 오늘부터 장사를 해라."
"Son, from today you will be a merchant."
"예? 제가 장사를 해요?"
"Huh? I will trade?"
아들은 놀랐다.
The son was surprised.
"그래, 비단을 가지고 나가서 팔아라.
"Yes, you will take the silk with you and sell it.
비단을 팔면 돈도 벌 수 있다."
"If you sell the silk, you can also earn money."
하지만 바보 아들은 자신이 없었다.
The son only scratched his head.
"팔기 시작하면 어렵지 않아.

비단 한 필만 팔아 봐."

어머니는 말했다.
The mother said.
"예, 어머니. 한번 해 보겠습니다."

CHAPTER 2

어머니는 아들에게 장사하는 방법을 가르쳤다.

The mother taught the trading method to her son.

어머니가 먼저 파는 시늉을 했다.

First the mother pretended to sell.

"비단 사세요, 좋은 비단 사세요."

"Buy silk, buy good silk.

그렇게 외치면 사람들이 비단을 사려고 올 거야."

If you shout like that, the people who want to buy silk will
come."

그 다음에 비단을 사는 사람에게 돈을 받아야 한다."

Next, you must get money from the people who buy the silk."

어머니는 아들에게 말했다.

The mother said to her son.

"어머니, 돈이 얼마를 받아요?"

"Mother, how much money do I get?"

아들은 어머니에게 물었다.

The son asked his mother.

"비단 한 필에 열 냥이.

"One roll of silk is 10 coins."

어머니는 대답했다.

The mother replied.

바보 아들이 고개를 끄덕였다.

The foolish son nodded his head.

바보는 얼른 장사를 하러 가고 싶었다.

The fool wanted to go and trade quickly.

장사가 재미있을 것 같았다.

He thought trading would be fun.

그러나 어머니는 아들이 돈을 받지 못할까 봐 걱정이 되었다.

However, his mother was worried that he would not get money.

어머니가 아들을 좀 더 가르쳤다.

She taught him a little more.

"장사를 할 때, 말이 많은 사람을 조심해라.

"When you are trading, beware of people who talk a lot.

어떤 사람은 비단이 좋지 않다고 말할 거야.

Those people will say that it is not good silk.

그러면서 비단 값을 깎아 달라고 한다.

By doing that, they ask for the price to be cut.

말이 많은 사람에게는 비단을 팔지 마라."

Do not sell to the people who talk a lot."

"그러면 말이 없는 사람에게 팔아야겠군요."

"Then selling to people who don't talk is good."

바보 아들은 말했다.

The foolish son said.

CHAPTER 3

바보는 다른 마을로 갔다.

The fool went to a different village.

그 마을 입구에 장승이 서 있었다.

At the village entrance there stood a totem pole.

바보가 장승에게 다가갔다.

The fool went closer to the totem pole.

"비단 사세요, 좋은 비단 사세요."

"Buy silk, buy good silk."

바보는 장승을 쳐다보며 말했다.

The fool said while staring at the totem pole.

그러나 장승은 대답을 하지 않았다.

But the totem pole did not reply.

바보는 다시 한 번 외쳤다.

The fool shouted once again.

"비단 사세요, 좋은 비단 사세요."

"Buy silk, buy good silk."

그래도 장승은 아무 말이 없었다.

But the totem pole still didn’t say anything.

바보가 고개를 갸웃했다.

The fool cocked his head.

바보가 어떻게 할지 몰라서 그냥 서 있었다.

The fool didn’t know what to do, so he just stood there.

그때 또 어머니의 말이 생각났다.

Then, again, he thought of his mother’s words.

어머니는 말이 없는 사람에게 비단을 팔라고 했다.

His mother said to sell silk to the people who don’t speak.

바보는 장승에게 비단을 팔아야겠다고 마음먹었다.

The fool decided it would be good to sell silk to the totem

pole.

"돈이 없어요?

"No money?

그럼 내일 돈을 받으러 올 게요.

Then tomorrow I can come and get it.

걱정 마세요."

Don’t worry."

바보는 장승에게 비단을 내밀었다.

The fool held out the silk to the totem pole.

장승은 아무 말없이 바보를 바라보고 있었다.

The totem pole stared at the fool without speaking.

"비단을 여기에 놓고 갈게요.

"I will put the silk here.

비단 값은 내일 주세요.

Please bring me the money for the silk tomorrow.

Goodbye."

바보가 비단을 장승 앞에 놓고 인사를 했다.

The fool put the silk in front of the totem pole and bowed.

바보는 콧노래를 부르며 집으로 돌아갔다.

The fool hummed as he returned home.

집에서는 어머니가 아들을 기다리고 있었다.

The mother was waiting for her son at home.

"비단을 팔았아?"

"Did you sell the silk?"

"예, 어머니."

"Yes, mother."

"정말 잘했구나!"

"Well done!"

어머니가 아들을 칭찬했다.

CHAPTER 4

"그런데 돈은 받았니?"

Then did you get the money?

어머니는 아들에게 물었다.

The mother asked her son.

"돈은 내일 받기로 했어요."

"I’m planning to get the money tomorrow."

The son replied.

이튿날이 되었다.

The next day came.

바보가 비단 값을 받으러 나갔다.

The fool went to get the payment for the silk.

바보는 장승이 서 있는 곳으로 갔다.

The fool went to the place where the totem pole stood.

장승은 어제 그 자리에 서 있었다.

The totem pole was stood in the place he was yesterday.

바보는 장승이 먼저 와서 기다리는 줄 알았다.

The fool thought that the totem pole arrived first and waited.

"돈을 주려고 일찍 오셨군요."

"You came early to give me money."

바보가 반가워하며 장승에게 인사를 했다.

The fool was thankful and bowed to the totem pole.

장승 앞에는 어제 바보가 놓고 간 비단이 없었다.

The silk that the fool placed in front of the totem pole
yesterday was gone.

밤에 도둑이 장승이 있는 곳을 지나갔다.

In the night, a thief passed by the totem pole.

도둑은 비단을 가져갔다.

The thief took the silk.

그러나 바보는 그 사실을 몰랐다.

But the fool didn’t know the truth.

"돈을 주세요.

Please give me money.

비단 값은 열 냥이에요."

The cost is 10 coins."

바보는 말했다.

The fool said.

그런데 장승은 아무 말이 없었다.

But the totem pole said nothing.

"오늘도 돈이 없어요?

You also don't have money today?

내일은 꼭 돈을 주셔야 해요."

Tomorrow you must give me the money."

바보는 장승에게 말했다.

The fool said to the totem pole.

바보는 집으로 돌아갔다.

CHAPTER 5

다음 날 바보가 또 장승을 앞으로 갔다.

The next day the fool again came in front of the totem pole.

"오늘은 비단 값을 주세요."

"Today please give me the silk money."

바보는 장승에게 말했다.

The fool said to the totem pole.

그러나 장승은 돈을 주지 않았다.

But the totem pole didn’t give him the money.

바보는 화가 났다.

The fool became angry.

"오늘 주겠다고 약속했잖아요?"

Didn’t you promise to give it to me today?

바보가 화를 내며 말했다.

The fool said angrily.

그러나 장승은 그냥 웃고 있었다.

But the totem pole just continued to laugh.

바보가 장승을 발로 찼다.

The fool kicked the totem pole with his foot.

바보가 장승에게 덤볐다.

The fool charged at the totem pole.

두 팔로 장승을 끌어안았다.

With two arms he grabbed the totem pole.

바보가 있는 힘을 다해서 장승을 밀었다.

The fool pushed the totem pole with all his might.

결국으로 장승이 쓰러졌다.

Finally, the totem pole fell over.

그런데 장승이 서 있던 곳에 자루가 하나 있었다.

But then, where the totem pole stood, there was a sack.

바보는 그 자루를 열었다.

The fool opened the sack.

자루 안에는 돈과 보물이 들어 있었다.

There was money and treasure inside the sack.

도둑이 훔친 보물을 장승 아래에 숨겨 둔 것이었다.

The thief had hidden his stolen treasure inside the totem
pole.

바보는 장승에게 미안했다.

The fool said sorry to the totem pole.

"돈이 여기 있다고 왜 말하지 않았어요?"

"Why didn't you tell me that there is money here?"

바보가 얼른 장승을 일으켜 세웠다.

The fool quickly put the totem pole back upright.

그리고 장승의 몸에 묻은 흙을 털어 주었다.

And he wiped the dirt off the totem pole’s body.

바보는 열 냥이 얼마인지 알지 못했다.

The fool didn’t know how much 10 coins was.

그래서 자루를 가져가기로 했다.

So, he decided to take the whole sack.

"고맙습니다. 다음에 또 비단을 팔러 올 게요.

"Thank you. Next time I will come and sell silk to you again.

안녕히 계세요."

Goodbye."

바보가 장승에게 고맙다고 절을 했다.

The fool bowed in thanks to the totem pole.

그리고 바보는 돈과 보물이 든 자루를 가지고 집으로 갔다.

Culture Note

장승 or Korean totem poles traditionally stand at the edge or

entrance to a village. The totem poles were believed to scare
away evil spirits and were sometimes worshipped. 장승 are
often depicted smiling or laughing.
