Learning Intention Success Criteria

1. I can describe and explain
To be able to describe and explain different types of reactions,
how reactions are classified. giving an example of each of
the following: single
displacement, double
displacement, synthesis,
decomposition
2. I can differentiate between
exothermic and endothermic
reactions, in relation to heat
evolved or absorbed.

Exothermic and Endothermic Reactions

Exothermic Endothermic

REACTIONS WHICH PRODUCE REACTIONS THAT ABSORB HEAT

Decomposition Reactions
• When one substance breaks down to form two or more new substances.

XY → X + Y
• Examples:
– CaCO3(s) → CaO(s) + CO2(g)

– CuSO4.5H2O(s) → CuSO4(s) + 5H2O(g)

Thermal Decomposition Reactions

Some substances will only decompose when heated Metal carbonates and metal
hydrogen carbonates are examples that undergo Thermal decomposition .

Examples:

2NaHCO3 → Na2CO3 + CO2 + H2O

2NaN3 → 2Na + 3N3

Combination Reactions
When two or more substances combine to form one new product.

X + Y →XY
Examples:
– C(s) + O2(g) →CO2(g)
– Mg(s) + O2(g) →MgO(s)
– 2H2(g) + O2(g) →2H2O(g)

Single Displacement Reactions

A metal displaces another metal from solution.

AB(aq) + C(s) → CB(aq) + A(s)

• Examples:
– 3AgNO3(aq) + Fe(s) → Fe(NO3)3(aq) + 3Ag(s)

– 2Ag(s) + CuSO4(aq) → Ag2SO4(aq) + Cu(s)

Double displacement
• A solid forms when two solutions are mixed. This reaction type is also known as a double-
displacement reaction.

AB(aq) + CD(aq) → AD(s) + CB(aq)

• Examples:
– AgNO3(aq) + NaCl(aq) → AgCl(s) + NaNO3(aq)
– 2KI(aq) + Ba(OH)2(aq) → 2KOH(s) + BaI2(aq)
Remember to write:
• States of each chemical;
• Then balancing the equation.

Combustion Reactions
• A reaction where one of the reactants burns in oxygen, producing
carbon dioxide and water.
X + O2 → CO2 + H2O
• Incomplete combustion produces carbon monoxide and water.
X + O2 → CO + H2O
• Examples:
– CH4(g) + 2O2(g) → CO2(g) + 2H2O(l)

– C3H8(g) + 2O2(g) → 3CO(g) + 4H2O(l)
