SuMS Aptitude Test - SAMPLE QUESTIONS

At SuMS, we are keen to support you as you prepare for your interview and
aptitude test. We have drawn together a selection of sample questions,
designed to give you a flavour of the test.

These questions are not indicative of the specific topics contained in the SuMS
aptitude test but rather illustrate the style of problems that our students will
encounter.

Topics will be drawn from across the GCSE syllabus.

All questions should be done without a calculator.

1. After 4 maths test, Jay’s mean mark is 65%.

After 5 maths tests, his mean mark is now 70%.
What was Jay’s mark in the 5th test?

2. Write as a single fraction in its simplest form:

6. Ahmed runs the same route every morning.

On Friday he took 20% less time than on Thursday.

On Saturday he took 9 of the time taken on Friday.
On Saturday he completed the run in 64 minutes.
How many minutes did he take to complete the run on Thursday?

7. A bowl contains 12 sweets.

There are:
5 red sweets
4 yellow sweets
3 orange sweets
Ian, Lou and Ali each pick a sweet.
What is the probability that they each pick a different coloured sweet?

8. The diagram shows a regular decagon.

Work out the size of angles a and b.

9. Line L1 has equation y = 2x + 4

Line L2 is perpendicular to L1 and passes through the point (4, 6).
Work out the coordinates of the point where L2 intersects the x axis.

10. Yosif has the same number of marbles and Mo.

Yosif gives 24 marbles to Mo.
Mo now has 4 times as many marbles as Yosif.

Work out the total number of marbles and Yosif and Mo have.
