Then, what is our new
lesson today?
Yes Mike.
Yes, Teacher
Correct.
Mike: combination of words
teacher
Our lesson for today is
about the combination of
words or what we called the
“compound words”.
Every one kindly read the
meaning of a compound
word.

A compound word is a union of

two or more words, either with or
without a hyphen. It conveys a
unit idea that is not as clearly or
quickly conveyed by the
component words in unconnected
succession.
Thank You Class.

The noun compound

means something made up
of two or more separate
components. Compound can
also be an adjective
meaning consisting of two
or more parts or
components.
A compound word is one
word, or one unit of
meaning, that is created by
joining two or more
separate words together.
For example
card + board = cardboard
The new word has an
entirely different meaning.
Did you get it class? Yes Teacher

We have 3 types of compound

words.
1. Open compound words
2. Closed compound words
3. Hyphenated compound
words

Mark, kindly read the open Mark: open compound word -

compound words? there is a space between the two
independent words, though they
are still treated as one unit with a
new “compound meaning.”
Thank you, Mark
Example for open compound word:
“My mother cleans our bed room.”
Bed – is a furniture use for
sleeping
Room – is an area
Bed + room = bedroom
Bedroom means a room for
sleeping
Did you understand the open
compound word class? Yes Teacher
Let’s proceed to closed compound
words
Mike please read Mike: closed compound words are
usually made up of two separate
words that are put together to
form a new word. There is no
space between the two words in a
closed-form compound word; the
compound appears as one single
word.
Thank you, Mike
For example:
“ Anna buy a new book in a
bookstore”
book refers to printed works
store is a retail establishment
book + store = bookstore which
means a store where books are
sold.
Did you follow? Yes Teacher
Last one is the hyphenated
compound word
Joy please read Joy: Hyphenated compound
words have hyphens between
each of the independent words
that serve as connectors. The
hyphens are a visual cue that the
words form one unit.
Thank you, Joy
This is the example for hyphenated
compound word, Mark has a
strong-arm.
Strong means powerful
Arm is a part of a shoulder
Strong + arm = strong-arm
means being able to move heavy
weights by using the arms.
