Session Enhance vocabulary by exposing readers to new words and expressions within
Objectives: context of Mathematics
References: K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum

Materials: Large pictures of words found in the “History of Geometry”

Components Duration Activities

A. Pictionary – The students will be grouped by 5. They
will then guess the English word of the picture/s that
will be flashed in the television. The students will then
give a short definition of the English words. (15 mins)

“History of Geometry”

In the ancient cradle of civilization, Mesopotamia, humanity took its first

steps in mathematics for practical purposes like trade. The Babylonians
mastered arithmetic and geometry around 2000 BCE, leaving behind
cuneiform tablets.

Egyptians joined the mathematical journey, using hieroglyphics on papyrus

to document their solutions to geometric problems for construction and
land measurement.

Greece emerged as a mathematical hub, with Pythagoras introducing the

famous theorem, and Euclid defining geometry principles in "Elements."

The Islamic Golden Age saw Al-Khwarizmi's groundbreaking work on

algebra, introducing variables and systematic equation-solving.

The Renaissance brought the Hindu-Arabic numeral system to Europe, and

Kepler and Galileo used math to describe celestial movements.

Newton and Leibniz revolutionized the 17th century with calculus, marking
the birth of the scientific method.

The 18th and 19th centuries delved into abstract math, with Gauss in
number theory and Galois in group theory.

The 20th century saw the advent of computers, with Turing laying the
foundation for computer science. Math intertwined with art and music,
revealing its aesthetic side.

In the 21st century, mathematics continues evolving, influencing fields like

quantum mechanics and artificial intelligence, shaping our understanding
of the universe. Each era adds a new layer to the timeless story of
mathematical discovery and innovation.
C. Question and Answer about the story. (10 mins)

1. How did they take the first step in Mathematics?

2. Who are the proponents in the History of Geometry?
3. In what ways did the History of Geometry change as
Reflection 10 mins time passes by?

If you were a Mathematician, would you want to be? Why?
