blow your mind. So, buckle up and
enjoy the ride as we embark on a
new journey of knowledge.

Are you all ready to listen? Yes. Ma’am!

• Attendance

Before we wander into a new body

of knowledge, let us see who are
the absentees in today’s meeting.
May I call the class president to
inform me if there are absentees
today?
Thank you, Ms. President. I’m glad
to know that you’re all present.

• Checking of Assignment
Last meeting, I asked you to do an
advance reading about issues faced
today. Did you all do it? Yes, Ma’am!

Have you read the information you Yes, Ma’am!

gathered?

Very well. Later on, we will see if

not only you’ve done your research,
but comprehend it as well.

Let’s proceed…

2. Review

So, last week, we listened to one of the

most notable speeches “I Have a
Dream” by Martin Luther King.

Do you still remember it? We still remember it, Ma’am.

If that’s the case, let us tackle what the

speech is all about.

Those who will answer will be given

incentives.

Let’s begin…

What is the message behind the

speech?

Yes, Kayleigh? I have a Dream is a speech that calls

for equality particularly among black
people as they’ve been oppressed for
years.
That’s correct! Very good.

What else? Yes, Rojan? Aside from the call for equality, this
speech identified the flaws of the
American government system. It
called out the unfair treatment of the
law to the Negro people, as well as
the measures to be carried out to
That’s correct! What an interesting make it a better place.
answer, Rojan.

For the next question, what is the

primary focus of the I Have a Dream
speech?

Anyone from the class? Yes, Jaxon? The primary focus of the speech is
equal treatment for all races.
That’s correct! Good job, Jax.

Why do you think Martin Luther King Discrimination among races

gave this speech? Yes, Macy? particularly discrimination against
black people has been rampant for
decades so Martin Luther King took a
step forward and encouraged people
to use their voices for the right cause.
He helped African-American people
attain the civil rights they deserved.
Indeed!

Very good, class! As I see it, you

listened very well last week. I’m happy
to know that.

B. MOTIVATION

Now, I have pictures with me here that

I will flash on the screen. Are you
familiar with the game “4 pics and 1
word”?

To give you an idea of today’s lesson,

we will begin with a preparatory
activity related to our main topic before
moving on to the lesson proper. This is
called “4 pics and 1 issue.”

So, I will flash the pictures on the

screen and you need to identify what is
the issue being conveyed.

Yes, Lyrae?

Very good! The answer is Poverty The picture conveys Poverty.

Yes, Nicole?

That’s right! This picture illustrates The answer is Bullying.

Bullying.

Yes, Troy?

Very good! The answer is Hunger.

For the last picture… The photo shows Hunger.

Yes, Percy? The picture illustrates Child Abuse,

Ma’am.
Good Job! The picture illustrates Child
Abuse.

Nice going, class! Seems like you’re

now ready to venture into our main
lesson. So, without fluff and bluff,
everyone listens up and lets us learn.
C. LESSON PROPER

Let us begin by determining the term

“Issue”.

The term issue refers to a relevant topic

or dilemma that people within a society
argue or discuss since it has a negative
impact on numerous people in the
society. As I previously stated, issues
are the underlying dilemmas that must
be addressed and resolved in order to
have a harmonious and better society.

What are the common types of issues

in society?

May I hear someone from the class? Common issues within a society
includes Social Issue, Moral Issue,
and Economic Issue.
Correct! Common issues in our society
include Social, Moral, and Economic
Issues.

Indeed! Common issues in our society

are Social, Moral, and Economic Issue.
Thank you, (state the name of the
student).

First, let us unravel what’s Social

Issue.

Social issues are issues that affect

citizens in society. It is a prevalent
issue in today’s society, and many
people are trying to resolve it. It is
often the result of factors that go
beyond what people can control.

Social Issues are frequently the reason

for the argument, discussion, and
opposing opinions. They are the source
of divergent views on what constitutes
morally right or wrong. In simple
words, these are the issues that affect
social relations. (Some students raise
their hands) Common issues within a
society include Social Issues, Moral
Issue, and Economic Issue.

Social Issue hinders society’s ability to

function at its best. An issue will be
considered a social issue because of the
following:

1. The problem affects people in

society.
2. The public, as a whole, recognizes
the situation as a problem.
3. A large number of the population
views the situation as a legitimate
source of concern.
4. Citizens can help to alleviate the
situation by working together.

Examples of Social Issues are Drug

Addiction, Poverty, Crime,
Unemployment, Racism, Hunger,
Malnutrition, etc.

Now, as part of our lesson on Social

Issue. I will play a video and you must
listen very well.

As you heard in the video you listened

to, citizens all over the world deal with
a variety of the most pressing social
issues that must be addressed.

Can anyone here in the class describe

this picture using the information
you've heard in the video?

Yes, Ali?
The image portrays discrimination,
particularly discrimination against
disabled people. As you can see in
the image, there’s crossed-out
signage of a disabled person which
means that people with disability
aren’t allowed in their establishment.
In addition, the other person in the
image looks like he’s stopping the
disabled person who I might add is
perhaps applying for a job. As
mentioned in the video,
discrimination toward people with a
disability remains rampant because
they deem them Agreed! People with
disabilities can also be competent
workers. We shouldn’t treat their
disability as something that prevents
them from excelling in a field. Thank
you, (state the name of the student).
How about this image? Anyone from
the class? (State the name of the
student) incompetent. It is certain that
this has to stop because their
disability doesn’t define their
personality
Agreed! People with disabilities can
also be competent workers. We
shouldn’t treat their disability as
something that prevents them from
excelling in a field.

How about this image? Anyone from

the class?

Troy? The picture shows poverty. Poverty

still remains one of the most pressing
issues within our society. With the
increasing rate of people in the
marginalized sector, it is important
that the Government provides help in
order to diminish it. Poor people face
a variety of issues, including a lack of
proper housing, clean water, healthy
food, proper medical care, education,
electricity, and opportunities. They
lack the financial resources to meet
their basic needs and maintain the
minimum standard of living.
Precisely! Poverty is widespread even
these days. The increasing rate of
unemployment leads to other problems
such as unplanned pregnancy which
deeply impacts poverty. People in the
marginalized sector fail to provide even
their basic needs because they aren’t
given the right opportunity to improve
their living.
May I hear an insight from the class
about this photo?

Angel? Drug addiction is one of the most

serious issues facing the world today.
People who use drugs become
dependent on them and, eventually,
addicted to them. When they are
already addicted, it is difficult for
them to stop using it, which leads to
negative behaviors. If you've noticed,
the criminals who commit the most
heinous crimes are drug users. This is
because drug addiction can result in
hallucinations and other
uncontrollable behaviors.
Thank you for that answer.

Do you have any questions about

None, Ma’am.
Social Issues?

The next issue is the Moral Issue. "A

moral issue is presented as any issue
with the potential to help or harm
anyone, including oneself." It entails
the distinction between belief and
preference, the experience of a certain
kind of feeling, and a particular type of
situation in which actions affect other
people. “These are situations or actions
that do not conform to the shared
norms and values, culture, and beliefs
distinguished by a certain community
or social setting.”

In simple terms, moral issues are issues

regarding principles of what is right
and wrong. An issue becomes a moral
issue when:

1. It goes against people's values,

beliefs, and preferences in society.
2. It encompasses behavior patterns
that repeatedly bring the individual into
conflict with society.
3. It encompasses actions that have the
potential to harm others or the
individuals themselves. Examples of
moral issues include same-sex
marriage, abortion, teenage pregnancy,
illicit affairs, graft and corruption,
incest relations, gambling, prostitution,
mercy killing, etc.

Speaking of one moral issue that is

often the subject of talk in church,
science, and academe is Mercy Killing.
Who among you here is familiar with (Some students raise their hands)
the term Mercy Killing?

I see, by the number of hands I’m

seeing right now, I assume that some of
you are familiar with Mercy Killing.

May I hear someone from the class?

What is Mercy Killing?

Yes, Amber? From what I know, Mercy Killing is

the act of killing someone with their
consent. An easy and painless death
for someone who’s been suffering
from an illness for a long time might
You’re somehow right, Amber. Thank request this.
you for answering.

Mercy Killing from the word itself

"Mercy," is the termination of a
patient's life without the patient
requesting it. For example, a husband
finally makes a decision to end his
wife's suffering who's been in a coma
for years. The patient herself didn't
request it but someone did.

On the other hand, we also have

Mercy's death. Although Mercy's death
and killing are a bit alike, it is
important to know the difference
between the two. If Mercy killing is
ending someone's life without the
patient requesting it by themselves,
mercy death is the action of ending a
patient's life upon the patient’s request.
It's like assisted suicide.

Since we’re talking about moral issues

and mercy killing is considered one
issue when it comes to morality, let’s
listen to this video…

What are your thoughts based on the

people's perception of mercy killing in
the video? May I hear from the class?

Yes, Kyle? If I were the one who is subjected to

Mercy Killing, Ma’am, I agree,
especially if I’m already half-dead or
the machine’s the only life support, I
have, then I won’t subject my loved
ones to torturing themselves whether
I will or I won’t wake up anymore.

Do you want to add something, Luna? Just like what Kyle said, Ma’am,
mercy killing is acceptable especially
if someone is suffering from
incurable disease which causes that
person to suffer more.

Do you agree with that class? Yes, Ma’am. Because if fighting for
your life means suffering from
endless pain and seeing your loved
ones hurting because you’re hurting,
isn’t it better to end it peacefully
rather than continuously suffer?

No, Ma’am, because I believe that

everyone should be given the chance
to live and have his life end naturally.
Hmm, you all have interesting insights!
I’m glad to hear them. Thank you for
sharing your thoughts, class.

Let’s proceed to the last issue which is

the Economic Issue.

Economic issues conclude that there is

a shortage of supplies or limited
resources available to meet human
wants and needs. The problem then
becomes how to determine what is to
be produced and how the production
factors are to be allocated.

Economics is concerned with the

methods for resolving economic
problems. This problem arises
primarily because human desires are
limitless and means to satisfy human
needs and wants are limited. In simple
terms, economic issues are issues
concerning the country's economic
resources. An issue becomes an
economic issue when:

1. It has something to do with inflation

or an increase in the price of basic
commodities and services which affects
a large number of people.
2. It entails an increase in
unemployment or the inability to find
work to support oneself.
3. It is characterized by poverty caused
by underlying factors such as illiteracy,
cultural discrimination among
religions, overpopulation,
unemployment, and corruption.

Examples of Economic Issues are

poverty, inflation, poor quality
education, hunger, poor sanitation, land
and housing insecurity, poor
healthcare, etc.

Are there any questions regarding

moral issues?

Yes, Santino? Ma’am, you mentioned poverty as

one example of a social issue a while
back. Why it is still included in the
moral issues?
Aside from being a social issue,
poverty is also considered an economic
issue since poor people have limited or
do not have access to quality education,
employment, land housing, etc.,
making it a socioeconomic issue. When
poverty interferes with people's
economic activities, it becomes an
economic issue. It means that people
can barely afford food, shelter, I see. I get it now. Thank you,
education, and health care. Ma’am.

You’re welcome. Any more questions? None, Ma’am.

If you don’t have any more questions,

let’s watch another video that talks
about the economic issue, of poverty.

Did you listen very well class?

Yes, Ma’am!
Were you able to grasp the information
conveyed in the video you listened to? Yes, Ma’am. We were able to
understand it.
If that’s so, may I have anyone from
the class tell me if it is possible to end
poverty by 2013 as the United Nations
plans?

Hmmm, same hands. I want to hear

from those who haven’t yet recited.
Mara? Is it possible to end poverty by
2013 as the United Nations plans?

Yes, Philomena? I think it is not possible, Ma’am,

considering that it’s already 2023,
and we only have 4 months until
2024, it is too ideal to think that
poverty will end almost 6 years from
now, especially because the
government of some countries does
not really contribute to improving
their country’s economy.

I think it is possible, ma’am, as long

as the United Nations plan will all be
successful, and if all people,
especially those in higher classes are
willing to help whether they are or
they are not public servants.

Yes, ma’am. Since they have the

means to extend help, it means that
they have the responsibility to help
people in the marginalized sector.

Speaking of rich people who are not

public servants, do you think that it is
their responsibility to help eradicate
poverty?

Yes, Leon, you may.

May I speak, Ma’am?

I beg to disagree, Ma’am. Rich

people who are not even public
servants don’t have the responsibility
to help poor people. I’m not saying
that they shouldn’t extend help, but
I’m saying that it isn’t their
responsibility. Responsibility means
you will do something because you
need to do it even if you don’t want
to. It is your job to do it. To make
poor people have stable jobs and
whatnot. However, those who aren’t
public servants shouldn’t be forced to
eradicate poverty if they don’t want
to. Helping the citizens attain the
quality of life they deserve is the job
of a public servant. Normal people
like us don’t have the responsibility
to do so, but we can extend help only
if we want to. Do not hold someone
accountable for something that isn’t
What an interesting insight, Leon. assigned to them.
Thank you for that.
I’m glad to see you all participating
and having the confidence to answer
even the questions that seem a bit
controversial.

Good job, class! It is a delight to hear

your thoughts and see that you’re all
interested in our lesson.

Any questions? None, Ma’am.

D. APPLICATION

To be a responsible citizen means that

you are aware of the various issues
faced by the society to which you
belong. As a youth of today’s
generation, it is important to be
knowledgeable of social, moral, and
economic issues. So, as a part of our
lesson, and for me to see if you really
understood the common types of issues
we’ve discussed. Let’s conduct an
activity called “Hear me then guess
me”. • Students will listen to a short
audio played by the teacher.
• Students will identify what
specific issue the audio
conveys and what type of
issue it is.
• Students must give an answer
on how it affects them and
one possible solution to
eradicate the said issue.

This audio we listened to

demonstrates unemployment which is
an economic issue.

Unemployment is one common

economic issue which affects the
society and its people. A lot of
people who have the ability to work
cannot find jobs that can provide
their basic needs.

This issue affects me as an individual

if one of my parents does not have a
job to support us, and therefore, we
cannot attain even our basic needs
such as food and shelter.

One possible solution for

unemployment is for the government
to provide programs that cater to
unemployed citizens.
The text we listened to conveys
Poverty which is both a social and
economic issue.

Poverty is considered a socio-

economic issue. Because of poverty,
people can hardly provide their needs
such as food, clothes, shelter,
education, and health.

Putting myself in the shoes of those

people who suffer from this issue,
can serve as a disadvantage in
achieving my goals and living a
better life. Poverty will prevent me
from attaining even a basic education
which will result in my inability to
have a stable job.

One important way to eradicate

poverty is by providing people with
more opportunities for education and
stable jobs.

The text we listened to is about

Bullying which is a moral issue.

Bullying affects hundreds of students.

If I were to put myself in the shoes of
people who are being bullied, I’m
likely to suffer from depression and
low self-esteem. I won’t also enjoy
my youth and will probably loss of
interest in everything.

One solution to stop this is to

encourage children to communicate
with their teachers or parents if they
are being bullied.

E. GENERALIZATION

Issues are part of our society. We

cannot avoid them but we can put an
end to them. That said, it is essential
for people, particularly students like
you to be aware of the underlying
issues in our society.

What’s the importance of showing

awareness of the various issues in
society?

Yes, Mary? Being aware means a higher chance

of gathering people to take a stand
and use their voices to fight against
social injustices, poverty, addiction,
climate change, etc.
Is being aware of these issues enough?

Yes, Vini? No, Ma’am. Being aware of the said

issues isn’t enough.
Why do you say so?
One must also listen and
comprehend. We should be able to
distinguish what’s the differences and
similarities between these issues in
order to eradicate them. We also need
to analyze them to be able to come up
with a solution to stop these
problems.

Very good! Now to sum up our lesson, • Students will supply each box
let’s conduct an activity called “Web of with an issue that falls under
Issue”. the category of moral, social,
and economic issues.
• Students will explain the
specific issue they mentioned.

✓ Racism – a moral issue

Racism is a moral issue because it
harms another individual who is not
included in one’s preference, or in
other words, it is a moral issue since
it discriminates against an individual
who they consider different from
them.

✓ Abortion – a moral issue

Abortion is one of the most common
and most talked about moral issues in
society. Some people are against it,
while some people also agree with it.
It is considered a moral issue because
people’s opinion is divided and their
stand varies based on their beliefs.

✓ Drug abuse – a social and

moral issue
Drug abuse is a social issue because
it affects society, but it also is
considered a moral issue in some
ways because some people think that
drug usage is justifiable especially if
you have a problem or you're going
through something difficult like
depression, grief, or other mental
health problems. However, other
people may also say that it is wrong
in every aspect no matter how helpful
it is to you because drugs can cause a
more serious problem.

✓ Inflation – economic issue

Inflation is an economic issue
because it affects all aspects of the
economy. It has an impact on
consumer spending, businesses, and
employment. Inflation can also
reduce the value of investments.

IV. EVALUATION
