2. Review
What did we talk about last meeting?

Last meeting, Ma'am Kim introduced

what is creative nonfiction.
When we say creative nonfiction, it
involves real people, real events, and
personal experiences. It is based on facts.

We also discuss the guidelines for

writing creative nonfiction.

There are eleven guidelines we can in

writing creative nonfiction.

B. MOTIVATION

As a starter of today’s lesson, let’s have an

icebreaker. • Students will be given two choices and
they need to choose among those two.
“Would you rather” • Students will make a brief stand on
why they prefer to choose that side

“Would you rather read a fiction or I would like to read a fiction book since
it is more enjoyable.
nonfiction text?”
I would read a nonfiction text because it
is true to life and I can gain new insights.

I would rather read an e-book, ma’am,

“Would you rather only read physical books
since it is more accessible and less
or only read e-books?” expensive.

I would rather read a physical book

because reading one feels nostalgic and
there are fewer distractions when you
read a hard copy of a book.

I would rather write a nonfiction book

since it allows me to write using my
“Would you rather write a fictional book or imagination and does not limit me to
a nonfiction book?” certain rules.

I would rather write fiction because

nonfiction books contain factual
information that would help me and
other students in school.

I would rather have my favorite hero’s

character since no matter how strong a
“Would you rather have your favorite hero’s villain is, at the end of the day, the
powers or your favorite villain’s powers?” hero’s power will persist.

I would rather have my favorite villain’s

power, especially because mine is
Thanos. Thanos is resistant to injuries
and invulnerable to all types of poisons.
I would like to have that kind of power.
Not to mention, he is also one of the
most powerful beings in the Marvel
universe despite him being the villain.

I would rather live in my favorite

“Would you rather live in your favorite character’s world. In that way, I can help
character’s world or have your favorite my favorite male lead and female lead to
character live in your world?” be together and survive all the
challenges thrown at them that serve as a
hindrance to their happily ever after.

I would rather live them in my world for

a change. Living in their world means
that I will leave my family behind and I
don’t want that. Also, if they live in my
world, I can teach them everything and
change the course of their fate.

Alright! I’m glad to hear your thoughts,

class.

Did you enjoy our activity?

C. LESSON PROPER

In line with our icebreaker, today’s

lesson has something to do with books,
specifically nonfiction books.

Last meeting, we talked about creative

guidelines in writing creative
nonfiction, so today, I will discuss the
most common elements of creative
nonfiction and the 5 r’s of creative
nonfiction.

First, let’s talk about the most common

elements of creative nonfiction
according to David Hood 2010.

According to David Hood, there are six

common elements of creative
nonfiction.

Writer of creative nonfiction often

utilizes six elements of creative
nonfiction when writing different types
and forms of creative nonfiction such
as...
The forms and types of creative

Writers incorporate several elements of

Very good!

Now, let's talk about the first element

which is Fact.
Fact is the information used as
Do you have any idea what a is Fact? evidence for a claim.

A Fact refers to a statement that is

true and verifiable.
That’s right! A fact is a statement that is
true and can be verified as such.

Writers of creative nonfiction write

their stories using facts rather than
fiction. They base their writing on facts
because it needs proof that it actually
happens or exists.

Remember that a writer can't make up

things or share stories and claim them
"fact".

The second one is Extensive research.

The writing must be based on
May someone read this? primary research such as interviews,
personal experience, and secondary
research, gathering information from
books, magazines, and newspapers.

Why do you think it is a must to do

extensive research when writing?

Same hands?

Alright, since I see the same students

raising their hands and I want to hear all
of you participate in today’s lesson—
let’s play a game.
(Students will count)
Do a headcount.

Remember your numbers. Let’s play the

game “duck race”.
If the duck with your number reaches Yes, ma’am
the finish line first, then you will be the
one reading or answering my question.

Is it understood?

Ma'am, extensive research is needed

in writing nonfiction stories because

understanding of our subject and

writing process? Why is it needed?
Extensive writing is part of the
writing process because a writer must
document events or personal
Number 2? experiences.

Correct! In writing nonfiction, it is

important to conduct a thorough study
or research in order to learn more about
a topic, person, or idea and to find out
more about the subject of your writing.
You don't want to rewrite was is already
written by other authors or repeat what
is already claimed in previous writings,
so you need to carry out your research
to provide new information.

Research also allows you to verify facts.

As a writer of nonfiction, you want to
be sure that what you write is true and
accurate. The writer must document events or
personal experience.
The third one is Reporting.

Number 5?

This means that as a writer, you need to

document events or things you
personally experience in order to add
them accurately to your writing and
ensure that the sequence of events told
in the piece of writing is correct. Yes, ma’am.

For example, in writing a memoir.

Do you still remember what a memoir

is? A memoir is a form of creative
nonfiction in which the author

his/her life.
Number 20?
A memoir includes personal
experiences, feelings, thoughts, and
opinions when writing text.

Number 31?

That's right! So, if you plan to write a

memoir, it will be more convenient for
you to have a record of the important
events that happened in your life in
order to not leave out any important
information that will add to the
accuracy and strength of your writing.
The same goes when writing an
autobiography.
Including personal experiences in

can help it become more realistic and

stronger connection with your
audience by including your personal
experiences.

A writer of nonfiction may incorporate

personal experience, feelings, and
opinions into his/her writing.

For example, personal experience,

opinions, and feelings of an author may
be included when writing a memoir or
personal essay.
The writer is required to explain the

to the reader.
Number 6?

The next element of creative nonfiction

is Explanation/Exposition.

The writer needs to explain the personal

experience or opinion he included in his
writing in order for the readers to
understand more and have context or
background details of the personal
experience and opinion he shared.
Creative nonfiction is often written in

Now, let’s proceed to Lee Gutkind’s 5

Rs of Creative Nonfiction

The first R of Creative Nonfiction is Creative nonfiction is focused on

Real Life. ‘real life’ aspects. The writer writes
literary pieces based on personal
experience. The writer also writes

about other people’s experiences
based on real events. (Hood, 2010)

Creative nonfiction from the word itself

"nonfiction", simply means that
nonfiction text must be based on facts
and is centered on real events that
happened in real life which includes
real people, personal and other people's
experiences.

Number two is Reflection.

Reflection is sharing our own

certain subject which shapes our

According to David Hood, Creative
May someone read this? Nonfiction is mostly based on the
personal ‘reflection’ of the writer
about what they are trying to write.
Number 7?
After compiling the gathered
information, the writer analyses
every side of the story. They will
then evaluate their thoughts and
opinions.

Writers are free to express their

Although the personal "reflection" of

the writer may be used in writing

remember that you must not write too
much about yourself alone without
looking at the universal focus or the
ideas and thoughts that might occur to
other people as well. It is crucial to also

journals and interviewing family and
close friends to ensure that all the

(Hood, 2010).

One of the main objectives of creative

Nonfiction is to gather and present
information, to teach readers about a
person, place, idea, or situation by
combining the creativity of the artistic
experience.

To ensure that you produce a text with

accurate information, research is
needed. The research phase in writing

topic he's writing?

Number 38.
First, you need to familiarize yourself
with the subject or topic you're planning
to write.
There are three main reasons why
research is part of the writing process
of creative nonfiction.

Read it simultaneously.

For example, you are the writer. Second, assess your competition.

If the topic is something you do not

know yet, you need to make yourself
knowledgeable enough to answer the
questions you formulated about the
topic you want to write about.

Here, you want to assess your Lastly, ask yourself "How can I reflect

subject? Who are the experts, the
pioneers, or other controversial figures?
You want to find a new angle - not
write a story similar to one that has
already been written.

Here, you will try to find and know the

point of view or the background story of
the individuals you plan to add to your
story.

biography about Shakespeare, you

reasons for incorporating research in the
writing process - it means you have
satisfied the fourth R of creative
nonfiction which is...

Correct! When we conduct research, we

read, right?

Not only must you, as a writer, read

research materials, but you should also
read the works of other prominent
writers. By doing this, you can gain
insights into how to better approach
your target audience through your Writing
writing, and it enables you to discover
the stylistic approach and writing style
of the author.

For the final step of constructing a

creative nonfiction text, we have…

The art of writing requires the

creativity, instincts, talent, and
imagination of the writer to write
groundbreaking pieces. Creating a
creative nonfiction text requires a lot of
techniques to have a memorable impact
on the target reader of the writer.

Just because you're writing a nonfiction

text, doesn't mean that you cannot be
creative.

Do not be afraid of writing creatively

even when writing nonfiction text.
Creative nonfiction, from the word
itself, basically means writing creatively
based on facts rather than fantasy or
fiction. In writing nonfiction text, the
writer will write informative books and
make it seem like fiction to engage the
readers.
