PROFESSIONAL LEARNING PACKAGE (HOTS-PLPs)
FOR GRADE 9 – 10 MATHEMATICS TEACHERS
August 14-18, 2023

NARRATIVE REPORT

Pursuant to the Memorandum DM – OUHROD-2023-0821 dated June 15, 2023, titled Conduct of
Orientation for all the Core Trainers on the Content and Delivery of the HOTS PLSs for Science,
Mathematics, and English Teacher through the Human Resource Development (HRD) section. The Iligan
City Division informed the participants on the conduct of the DIVISION TRAINING ON HIGHER ORDER
THINKING SKILLS-PROFESSIONAL LEARNING PACKAGE (HOTS-PLPs) FOR THE ENGLISH,
SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS TEACHERS on August 14-18, 2023 at Crystal Inn, San Miguel, Iligan City.
This seminar is aimed to: support teachers in understanding HOTS and in reflecting theses skills in
their respective classroom practices through the development of HOTS super items for EnSciMa subjects;
Help the teachers in performing pedagogy and assessment practices that promote HOTS.
Day 1: August 14, 2023
Morning session
Registration started at exactly 8:30 AM with seventy-two (72) which constituted the grade 9 and 10.
mathematics teacher-participants. At exactly 10: 00 o’clock in the morning, the opening program was
conducted by the Program Management Team. It began with the singing of the National Anthem and a
prayer, statement of purpose, walkthrough of the session including the “parking lot” for participants’
suggestions and clarification that needed utmost concern in the on-going session.
Session 1A : HOTS in the classroom: Review of Professional Learning Packages.
It was delivered by one of the resource persons, Evelyn Ramos II. This allowed the participants to
engage with the learning package. Also, allowed the resource person to ask questions on the participants
such as: Which part/s of the HOTS professional learning package stand out the most for them
(participants)?; Which part/s seem not clear to them? ; and How may the HOTS PLPs support your work as
a school leader? Before Session 1A came to a close, the PMTs handed out Worksheet 1 so that the
participants may answer the first output question.

Session 1B: Discussion and sharing of responses of the participants in order to give them the
opportunity to share and clarify some possible concerns. Along the session 1b, it was a very fortunate day
because the Regional Education Program Supervisor in Mathematics – Dr. Marino O. Dal and our Schools
Division Superintendent – Dr. Jonathan S. Dela Pena visited and graced the seminar.
Afternoon session
Session 2: Afternoon session HOTS in the classroom. This session was facilitated by one of the
resource persons on the seminar, Principal IV - Richard S. Talaid. Sir Talaid introduce the SOLO Model to
the participants and expounded how it is related or differed from the Bloom’s Taxonomy. He emphasized
the importance of the LOTS as well as the HOTS in crafting assessment for our learners.
Session 3, the PMTs distributed the worksheet 2 to the participants to check their understanding of
the basic elements of the SOLO discussed by Sir Richard S. Talaid.

Day 2: August 16, 2023


Morning session
The preliminary part of the second session of the seminar was facilitated by the program
management team at exactly 8:00 o’clock in the morning. Representative from the participants were called
to recapitulate the previous (day-1) session’s activities. Discussion of the results of evaluation for day-1
was also brought up represented by one of the participants of each grade level.
Session 4: Supporting Classroom teaching-learning though Learning Approach was facilitated by
Ma’am Evelyn Ramos II for the purpose in supporting participants in understanding the learning
approaches provided in the HOTS learning package. She emphasized different learning approaches that
somehow best suted for our learners in order to succeed in the teaching -learning process employing
HOTS SOLO model.
Session 5: Supporting HOTS in the Classroom. In this session the Ma’am Evelyn Ramos introduced
the HOTS learning package presentation of the SOLO-based items. She further showed the template in
writing SOLO-based super item with its parts such as : competency, stem, acceptable answer, level of the
stem and answer according to SOLO Model, and its justification. This allowed the participants to critically
explore SOLO-based items by practicing writing and rationalizing sample items.

The distribution of the learning packaged was made by the program management team to the
participant. In order for the participants to read the learning package and be guided on framework and
content of the SOLO Model in making assessment.
Afternoon session
Sessions 6 – 8: were the continuation of the discussion on the concepts and principles on the solo-
based samples which facilitated by Ma’am Evelyn Ramos II and Sir Richard S. Talaid. There was a relay of
questions and answers from the participants and facilitators. Each of participants was engrossed in
learning about integrating SOLO – based items in their day-to-day teaching -learning activities at school.
Before the second day was concluded, the program management team reminded on the evaluation of the
seminar via QATAME.
Day 3: August 16, 2023
Morning session
The program management team started the preliminary at exactly 8:00 o’clock in the morning.
Representative from the participants were called to recapitulate the previous (day-2) session’s activities.
Responding to the parking lot on the questions and clarifications from the participants were addressed by
the concerned facilitators.
Session 9. The participants' SOLO-based super item output was first created during this session.
The participants were divided into groups according to their assigned grade level (grades 9 or 10), which
was first facilitated by two SHS teachers who are experts in mathematical content: Razel C. Soriano, MT II,
and Daisy R. Acas, Teacher III. Learning competences based on the MELC were given to the participants.
Samples of the contents of each column of the template/prototype SOLO-based super-item were displayed
by Razel C. Soriano. In order for the participants to produce an output that matches to their allocated
learning skills, he also discussed how each column relates to the others.
Afternoon session
On the learning competencies that were given to them, the participants started to create their super-
items. It went on for two hours. Each representative participant from grades 9 and 10 presented their work
before session 9 came to a conclusion and got evaluation from Mr. Razel C. Soriano and Ms. Daisy R.
Acas. A truly engaging discussion resulted from the attendees' queries being answered by the facilitators
and subject matter experts. The programm management team then presented the QATAME evaluation of
the seminar for day three.

Day 4: August 17, 2023
The continuation of the participants' creation of SOLO-based super items was the focus of the
seminar's session on day 4. Since each group of participants was allocated 2-4 learning competencies.
The facilitators focused on a series of questions and answers among the groups of participants. Since
everyone who participated in the seminar was able to provide their output, it was an extremely difficult yet
rewarding day. The facilitator and subject matter experts voluntarily assisted the participants in achieving a
good result as a shared objective.

Day 5: August 18, 2023


The preliminary part of the fifth day of the seminar was facilitated by the program management
team at exactly 8:00 o’clock in the morning. Recapitulation on the previous session (day-4) activities was
made.
The day-5 of the seminar was demo-teaching of the 10 volunteer teachers. It was started at exactly
9:00 o’clock in the morning. That said event was observed by the one the resource persons – Ma’am
Evelyn Ramos II, and the two content experts – Razel C. Soriano and Daisy R. Acas. The demo-teachers
were critiqued according to the Class Observation Tool. After the demo teaching, finalization of the output
on SOLO-based super items were made and was submitted thru an online link created by the program
management team.
Distribution of the certificates of the participants and facilitators was done in the afternoon session.
An impression message was given by a grade 9 teacher representative. A challenge message was given
by Sir Richard S. Talaid and it was accepted by one of the grade 10 teachers representative. The seminar
on HOTS – PLPs for Math Teachers was concluded with a closing message by Education Program
Supervisor – Dr. Eugene Daguio.
