Mr Nguyen
L.I: To use calculate inputs
and outputs using flowcharts
Flowcharts

 We can use flowcharts to help

organising equations
 The first number is the input
 The last number is the output
 To complete a flow chart, simply
perform the operations in order on
the input
Inverse operations

 Each operation has it’s opposite,  What is the opposite of × 3?

the operation which undoes it  ÷3
 The pairs of operations which are  What is the opposite of −7?
opposites:
 +7
 + 𝑎𝑛𝑑 −
 What is the opposite of +12?
 × 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ÷
 −12
 What is the opposite of ÷ 34?
 × 34
More examples of inverse operations

 What is the opposite of +17?  What is the opposite of ÷ 13?

 −17  × 13
 What is the opposite of ÷ 57?  What is the opposite of −24?
 × 57  +24
 What is the opposite of +82?  What is the opposite of × 16?
 −82  ÷ 16
 What is the opposite of × 14?  What is the opposite of
 ÷ 14
𝑠𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑒 (𝑥 2 )?
 𝑆𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑟𝑜𝑜𝑡 𝑥
Backtracking

 Sometimes, instead of working  The opposite of × 2 is ×÷ 2

forwards, we’ll be working
 28 ÷ 2 = 14
backwards. This is called
backtracking  The opposite of +5 is −5
 Starting at the end and working  14 − 5 = 9
backwards, we will need to perform
the inverse operation of each step  Our input was 9

 The opposite of ÷ 7 is
×7
 4 × 7 = 28
