Integration by parts

There are 3 types of integration by parts

6.1 Type 1

Keep on differentiating until you get a 0 when multiplying LHS with RHS

∫ 𝑥 2 𝑒 𝑥 𝑑𝑥
D I
2 𝑥 𝑥 𝑥
= 𝑥 𝑒 − 2𝑥𝑒 + 2𝑒 + 𝑐
+ 𝑥2 𝑒𝑥

− 2𝑥 𝑒𝑥

+ 2 𝑒𝑥

− 0 𝑒𝑥

×
∫ 0𝑑𝑥
left with
right

6.2 Type 2

Keep on differentiating until if you multiply the left hand side with the right hand side and
you have something to integrate

D I
∫ 𝑥 2 𝑙𝑛𝑥 𝑑𝑥
+ 𝑙𝑛𝑥 𝑥2
𝑥3 𝑥2
= 𝑙𝑛𝑥 − ∫ 𝑑𝑥 − 1 𝑥3
3 3
𝑥 3
𝑥3 1 × 𝑥2
= 𝑙𝑛𝑥 − ∫ 𝑥 2 𝑑𝑥 ∫
3 3 3
left with
𝑥3
1 𝑥 3 right
= 𝑙𝑛𝑥 − ( ) + 𝑐
3 3 3

𝑥3 𝑥3
= 𝑙𝑛𝑥 − + 𝑐
3 9
6.3 Type 3

Keep on differentiating until, if you times the right hand side with the left hand side you
have the same of what you have started BUT with opposite signs

∫ 𝑒 𝑥 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥 = −𝑒 𝑥 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑥 + 𝑒 𝑥 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥 − ∫ 𝑒 𝑥 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥 𝑑𝑥

D I

2 ∫ 𝑒 𝑥 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥 = −𝑒 𝑥 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑥 + 𝑒 𝑥 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥 + 𝑒𝑥 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥

1 − 𝑒𝑥 −𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑥
∴ ∫ 𝑒 𝑥 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥 = (−𝑒 𝑥 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑥 + 𝑒 𝑥 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥)
2 + 𝑒𝑥 −𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥

𝑒𝑥 ×
∴ ∫ 𝑒 𝑥 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥 = (−𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑥 + 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥) ∫ 𝑒 𝑥 (−𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑥)
2
left with
right
