MODULE TITLE: The Primary School Learner-Essentials of Child development

MODULE CODE: TCP/ST 1102

For this module, students will be assessed on two components:

I- An oral presentation- Group work (3-5) (60%)

II- An individual part: (40%)

I –Oral presentation - group work (60 %)

In groups of 3-5 students identify a problem that one child may be facing from your
observations in a primary school. Along with the observation, include the following
activities:

Activity 1
Identify the key stages and describe in detail, the patterns (milestones) of development for
each of the following:
• Physical growth and development
• Intellectual development
• Social and Emotional development

Activity 2
Provide an explanation of two methods of monitoring development from:
• Developmental screening
• Growth monitoring
• Assessments

Activity 3
Explain the factors which have affected the development of your chosen child. You must
choose factors which have actually had an impact on the child’s development from:
• The family
• Environmental factors
• Social and economic factors
• Psychological factors
• Behavioral problems.
Explain the effect of factors on your chosen child’s development.

The presentation will be of 20 minutes duration per group.

II – Individual part: (40%)

For the individual part, you will have to plan and conceptualize one learning aid/activity to a
child who is under your supervision. Your choice must be designed to help their
development in a specific way. Your plan must include:
1. The aims of the learning aid/activity
2. The objectives of the learning aid/activity
3. The outcomes to be achieved by the child using the aid/activity.
4. The method of making the learning aid/activity
5. Resources used.
6. Safety aspects considered.
7. Evaluation of the plan

General guidelines:
1. You are informed that it is mandatory that all writing assignments are submitted
to Turnitin which is a plagiarism-detection software intended to address plagiarism
and improper citation. All submissions must be accompanied by Turnitin’ Digital
receipt and a statement of originality (Honour Code).”
The rules and regulations for anti-plagiarism are clearly stated on the MIE website.
2. The individual assignment should be spiral binded together with your name and
your respective lecturer’s name.
3. In the case of late submissions, students should fill the form ‘late submission’ and
attach it to the coursework.
