Task 1: fire arrangements

(A) Positive point about the fire arrangements at MSL


• As the scenario describes fire extinguisher are installed at different places for fighting
which is positive point for fire arrangement.
• Fire alarm system are installed in the building which is used in case of emergency for
announcement.
• In case of emergency methods of avoiding fire are given which is positive aspects of fire
arrangements.
• Emergency and fire safety posters have been put up at various places.
• The car park is provided as an assembly point in case of emergency
• Induction is given before starting the work which is positive point about the fire
arrangements at MSL.
• The company has installed signboards to indicate which direction they have to in case of
fire emergency.
(B) Negative point about the fire arrangements at MSL
• The most negative aspects of fire safety arrangements are the lack of training which is not
given. While many new workers have been added during this time who have not been
trained for fire safety.
• No drill was carried out to prevent fire in emergency situation Because without it worker
will not be able to deal with it in emergency situation.
• Scenario tells us management is only interested in production not for escaping in
emergency situation.
• SML has not developed any management documents.
• The assembly point which is provided by MSL Is not enough for such a large organization.
• According to scenario SML not provided proper instructions of exit in case of emergency
that where they have to go in fire emergency situation.
(C) Importance of fire drill practice
• Through fire drill practice workers will not get confused in emergency situation they will
be to easily move towards the exit point.
• Through this practice everyone will know their responsibility that what are their
responsibility in such emergency cases.
• The confidence of the workers will improve and they Will be able to play their role
effectively in emergency situation through fire drill.
• In this way they will be able to check their equipment to see if it is working properly or
not like as they will be able to check weather fire alarm is working or not if not they be
able to repair it. they will be able to check fire extinguisher and if is also not working
they can replace it with a new.
• A company can avoid a major accident through fire drill activities.

• If the company does not carry out fire drill activities and in such a fire breaks out and
company will suffer a lot of damage of equipment and machinery and their workers may
also suffer injury. As a result, the reputation of the company will be affected and no one
would like to work in the company.

• This is necessary that company teaches his workers first aid prevention method so that
they can save their lives and save the company from a major accidents

Task2: Managing risk for those working from home

MSL has developed a risk assessment for those working from home and this risk assessment
has been sent to sales manager. MSL gives instructions to those working from home.
According to scenario sales manager has responsibility to managing risk working from home
he makes meeting and notices workers poor posture in the chair during online meetings. At
the team meeting every worker gives their opinion about health and safety in this way they
can share all things which they have to face working from home although they didn’t solve
it.

Task 3: suitability of generic risk assessment or risk assessments

Current risk assessment is not suitable according to SML because it was made in 2018 five
years ago during this time many changes have been in the SML. This assessment is not
suitable to current situation because many new workers have been hired during this time.
An enforcement notice has been issued to MSL due to increase in accident which shows the
safety culture of MSL is negative therefore risk assessment needs to be updated.

Management believes that no hazard can be occur during work unless any worker make a
mistake for this negative approach of management risk assessment is not considered
suitable for MSL.

This risk assessment did not reveal any aspects that could have helped to prevent accident
there this risk assessment should be updated.

There is no formal system for keeping record of past accident because of which we can
prevent himself in future from these accidents therefore this risk assessment not suitable
and need to be updated.

Task 4 : monitoring and measuring (audits)

(A)

(1) Negative about HSM auditing approach

The health and safety manager should take the opinions of the director and
managing director while preparing the audit but according to the scenario
HSM ignores them.
Audit preparation should be done by only experience person but in the scenario it is seem
he has done this for the first time which is negative aspect about HSM auditing approach.

The process of the preparing audit has to be done very carefully but HSM prepare it in a
short time this his Hasty preparation may also lead to mistake.

(2) positive about HSM auditing approach

HSM studies the health and safety documents which includes fire safety and risk assessment
before preparing the audit which is positive aspects about HSM auditing approach.

HSM prepares audit after the consultation with workers in which he takes the opinions of
workers about health and safety issues in MSL.
HSM properly identify the hazard of the place of work through consultation with the
workers.

(B) what is negative about the director response to audit?

The director has no interest in the preparation of audit report and he doesn’t provide any
assistance for this. He believes that no hazard can be create unless All the workers do their
job irresponsibly. He gives priority to only sales and finance he doesn’t know about the
condition of place of work therefore he doesn’t give any assistance to HSM. When health
and safety manager complete the audit report he doesn’t give any importance to it from
which HSM discourage which is director negative response to HSM.

Task 5: adequate first aid provision

First aid should be provided for all the workers of MSL because this is moral responsibility of
MSL to protect the life of every worker.

First aider should be selected for first aid and these first aider should be well trained in
their work. All the workers should know their names so that in case of emergency they can
get Their services

First aid kit should be in sufficient number to be kept it in different places in the MSL as in
the scenario describes only one first aid kit is kept in warehouse of MSL.

When new workers are to be hired training should be given according to their work so that
no bad situation create at the work place as the scenario describes new workers are not
trained.

MSL should hire only competent workers for high risky task so that no emergency situation
be happen.

First aid kit should be available in the vehicle used for delivery.
The company has provided the car park as an assembly area in case of fire emergency which
is not suitable according to numbers of workers.

Task 6: health and safety management roles and responsibilities

Managing director
Managing director is responsible for manage health and safety of their workers but
he blames the workers for this. This is MD’s responsibility to train the workers when
assigned a risky task. MD believes that fire drill will disturb their business therefore
he didn’t conduct any fire drill after 2018. MD has also neglected fire drill and risk
assessment review. It is the responsibility of MD to give the risky task only
competent workers but he has given the work those workers who ignored health
and safety at work place.
Director
It is the responsibility of director to take interest in all health and safety matter but
he neglects his duty. He believed hazard should not be considered unless workers
do their job irresponsibly. Director give priority to finance instead of giving priority
to manage health and safety as the scenario describes the directors are more
interested in making such money as possible. It is the director’s responsibility to
take action to minimize risk but he has ignored. It is the responsibility of the director
to be aware about place of work and its conditions but he neglected his duty.
HSM
HSM developed risk assessment alone because senior management didn’t involve in
HSM risk assessment. HSM seems to doing inspections of all the work place.
According to scenario HSM analysis the documentation and consultation with
workers to get their feedback about health and safety. many risk were not assessed
by HSM. HSM is not competent for this task although he makes many efforts for
completing this task according to scenario it was his first time experience.
Workers
This is worker’s responsibility to report any hazard which they find on Their
workplace but they didn’t do this. this is worker’s responsibility to be trained before
starting Their work but they didn’t do this.
Team leader
According to scenario Team leader gives induction training because there is a high
turnover if workers and induction training Will cover site roles and fire
arrangements. team leader didn’t share nominated first aider list to Workers in
induction training that show negative role of team leader. He didn’t provide written
job description to new workers. He believes that workers will not any if they follow
the instructions.

Task 7: financial arguments to improve health and safety

There are many financial arguments to improve health and safety in MSL
• Company reputation will be damage for poor health and safety system and will lead
to business losses.
• If a worker gets injury during his work, he can claim for compensation and the
company will have to pay money for his compensation.
• If MSL ignore health and safety in work place and accident happens enforcement
can issue notice for penalty as in the scenario describes a notice was issue to MSL by
enforcement.
• If a worker gets so injury in the accident that he will not be able to come on work in
this case company financial loss will giving sick pay to injured worker.
• In accident company equipment maybe damage and company have to repair these
or Replace with new equipment which lead to financial loss of company.
• A new worker will be hired in place of injured worker the cost of new worker
company has to pay.
• If a worker dies in an accident company has to pay a lot of money for compensation
which lead to financial losses of company.
• Production will be decrease due to the absence of workers
• If the company doesn’t supply products on time this will damage company
reputation.
• To make up for the shortfall in production more time will have to be invested which
will also cost the company.
• If company didn’t manage health and safety and accident happens now a day in this
situation company can be sealed by enforcement.
• Company insurance premium Will be increased and they Will put pressure on
company to manage health and safety.
• When a worker gets injury in an accident it’s impact will be on his colleagues they
may get shock after seeing the accident and they Will be absent in such situations.
• Company property will also be damage in case of accident.
• If the company has high accident rate on business level people do not doing
business with him because due to accident, their production decreases and they
cannot supply their goods on time which will cause financial loss to company.
• If the company does not maintain health and safety and the accident happens so it
will a negative in the society which will affect the business.
• If the enforcement seals the company for not maintain health and safety so it will
have to pay a lot of money to reopen it again because in court proceeding, lawyers’
fees have to paid and fines have to paid as well which will cause financial loss of
company.
• If any equipment is damage in case of accident many costs have to paid for bringing
new in place of it which will lead to financial loss to company.
• In case of absence worker, new workers have to bring in to replace the absent
workers and then they have to be trained according to their work which will cause
the financial to company.
• It is important that the company implement health and safety to avoid the big
accident and the costs.
(D) Task 8: human factors
• The management of SML does not pay attention to health and safety arrangements
their focus is only for production which have negatively influenced the behavior of the
workers.
• If an accident happens the manager holds the workers responsible for this instead of
himself due to which worker’s health and safety seriously damage.
• The risk assessment was not updated with the passage of time which was done many
years ago.
• No formal system has been established for reporting accident due to which no previous
accident has been reported.
• Workers activities are not being monitored what has a bad effect on workers’ health and
safety
• Company hires new workers as per it’s requirements but training is not provided to new
workers.
• The top management of the company is not interested in the matter of health and
safety rather their all interest is towards sales and finance.
• Risk assessment has been made 6 years ago in 2018 during this period many changes
have been occurred therefore this risk assessment is out date which influenced negative
affect on worker’s behavior.
• All the senior management thinks worker’s careless create hazard which is negative
impact on workers.

• When an accident occur it is no investigated which leads many people to be careless. If


the company investigate the scandal and punishes those responsible for it, then no one
will take advantage in future.

• There is no supervision of their work which has a negative effect on them and they
become careless in their work and this results in accident.

• Risk was made as per 2018 which is not exactly up to date as there is huge difference
between the number of workers now and have been many changes. many new workers
have been hired who have not been trained on the job at all for which negative impact
on the behavior of worker.

• When an accident occurs, senior management held responsible for it only because of
their fault. Even it is management fault, they have not provided safe place of work but
they will consider worker for this fault which has a negative impact on worker behavior.

• In case of fire emergency, no proper training has been given to workers many workers
do not know what to do and where to go in an emergency situation. Recently in fire drill
activities it is seen that are confused about what to do.
