This is a story which begins and also ends with our hero Caleb.

He is a wizard prodigy,
who from an early age could not only control magic, but compose it like a musician or poet.
From there, he achieved far greater feats namely returning a city from rubble. Such skill earned
him the attention, everyone in the lands far and wide knew his name, even caught the eye of the
gods, the creator of magic themselves, Hecate.

In the past, gods of war were angered to see the highly praised Hecate spoken of in all
the realms. A being sent by the gods, Clytius, challenged Hecate for their position out of
jealousy. Clytius sought to usurp the god of magic so that even he could become a god himself.
He almost succeeded but it only caused the greatest chaos to happen. When his attack struck
Hecate, all magic disappeared in a blink of an eye, since their being was the essence of magic
itself.

Although this happened, traces of magic hidden away in infused magical items such as
weapons, armor, necklaces and rings. A coven of wizards, which were Caleb’s ancestors, close
family and friends, had the same goal of gathering and worshiping the little magic contained
within, hoping that one day Hecate may return.

One day, the god of magic, Hecate, did return and revealed themselves to Caleb and
became his teacher. But even so, he desired more. Caleb wanted to win their affection, he
wanted to prove himself worthy of their grace, to be as great or more than the gods themselves.
He knew this was selfish of him, being able to stand in the presence of a god but to be still
unsatisfied, no mere human could ever. He desperately wanted to be able to walk side-by-side
with them, to stand on equal ground.

Hoping to find a clue somewhere, he ventures forth on his quest to retrieve all the
scattered magic. Till he came across an ancient tomb that contained a fragment of primal magic
which was locked out of time, separated from Hecate themselves. He wanted to reunite with
Hecate with their missing piece of magic but failed.

As a result, Caleb’s body became the host to a destruction orb. The orb would
continuously beat, absorbing energy from the magic, counting down to an ultimate destruction
that was capable of tearing down cities. As it began by draining Caleb’s own connection to
magic he found his magical abilities greatly weakened.

Hecate took notice of this and ordered him to sacrifice himself at a remote area. This
shows that we mere mortals can never scratch more than the surface of magic
