us see if who between us can reach that side first. Let us
start here from the middle part,” challenged Rico.
“Cool, deal! But whoever get lose will buy hot cake
and cold melon juice from Aling Lily’s store for our
snacks,” winked Paul. The swimming race began. Rico
glided through the water smoothly while Paul followed at
his fast pace. Paul almost overtook Rico. When Paul
almost reached the side, he heard Rico shouted for help.

Toadisha
Once upon a time in a faraway pond, there lived
a toad named Toadisha. She has nothing better to do
than signal the approach of rain or decrease the
population of mosquitoes and other insects around.
Summer time came. The pristine pond where
Toadisha and the rest of the toads lived has dried up.
This made her upset. Days and nights, Toadisha
patiently waited for the rain to come. She never got
tired of waiting. She croaked and croaked all day long.
One day, the vast was covered with dark and
heavy clouds. Then, there were vivid lightning and
gruff thunder. Strong wind blew. Toadisha started to
croak. After having alerted the folks, heavy rains fell
leaving the dried pond filled with rainwater. A sweet
smile could be seen on Toadisha’s face. Her heart
jumped with joy. At last, her long wait was over.

For summarizing the short story, we will be going to

summarize it in just one paragraph, write it on your ½

sentences. Write your answer in your activity notebook /

The Eagle Kite

In a dry cornfield near a nipa hut, sat a boy who is

looking amazingly at the blue sky. Lucio enjoyed gazing
at the different shapes of kites flying freely above the
clouds. ”Wow, they are so colourful! How I wish I could
make one also,” he said to himself.
The next day, he visited his friend Lucas who
happened to be busy doing something. ”Hello Lucas, how
are you? It seems you are busy,” said Lucio. “Yes my
friend, I am trying to make an eagle-shaped kite. I would
love to fly this as soon as I am done fixing it,” answered
Lucas.” Can I go with you?” asked Lucio. ‘Sure, my
friend, together we will fly my kite,” replied Lucas.
Lucio and Lucas had a good time flying the
eagle-shaped kite together with the other children in the
cornfield. The eagle-shaped kite glided through the air
and flew higher and higher above the sky. In a few
moments, Lucas tried to pull the string but something
went wrong. The eagle-shaped kite was caught tied in a
branch of a mango tree. Lucas was so worried on what
to do.” Stay here Lucas. I will climb the mango tree and
get your kite.” After several minutes, Lucio came down
from the tree and brought his friend’s kite.
“Thank you Lucio, you are such a helpful friend.
So I will be giving you this kite of mine. It is all yours. I
will be making another one, so we can fly our kites
together,” said Lucas. Lucio was so happy because he
had already a kite which he really dreamed to have.

Mastery now ready for the group tasks?

I will give each of the group a short story and write it on

a piece of paper your summary also answer the
questions that are asked on the paper. These stories I
have are the hare and the tortoise, the wolf in sheep’s
clothing and the little mouse makes big mistake.

Little Mouse Makes a Big Mistake

Mouse and Lion are friends. They live in the African

grasslands. Lion likes to sleep under a shade tree for
most of the day. It is very hot in the grasslands. Every
day, Mouse runs far and wide through the grasslands.
He likes to know everything that is going on. In the
evening, Mouse comes back and tells Lion all the news.
After the sun goes down and the air gets cooler, Lion
sometimes decides to go for a run. He lowers his huge
head and invites Mouse to hop up. Mouse hops up, and
then hangs on for dear life.

During the day, while Lion is sleeping, Mouse checks

on all the animals. He likes to watch the zebras as they
graze on the grass, swishing their tails. He likes to
watch the hippos being lazy in the river. He likes to
watch the giraffes eating the tender leaves from the
tops of the trees. Most of all he likes to watch the
elephants. The baby elephants play in the river near the
hippos. They use their trunks to spray each other with
water. The mother elephants watch the babies carefully,
and call them to come out of the water if there is any
danger.

Mouse keeps himself well hidden when he is watching

the elephants, because everyone knows that elephants
are afraid of mice. But one day mouse made a mistake.
He was so interested watching the baby elephants play
that he forgot to keep himself hidden. One of the
mother elephants saw Mouse. She reared up on her
back legs and lifted her trunk in a mighty trumpeting
roar. The babies ran to their mothers, and the
elephants began to run. Dust was thick in the air as
they ran, and the ground shook.

“Oh no!” thought Mouse. “I have scared them all

away! They may never come back!” And he ran to find
his friend, Lion.

“Lion, Lion!” Mouse cried. “I have scared the

elephants, and they are running away. What can I do?”

Lion lowered his huge head and told Mouse to hop

up. Mouse hopped up and then held on for dear life.
Mouse told Lion which way to go, and Lion ran fast.
First, Lion saw the dust in the air. Then he saw the
elephants running. He circled around them, far to their
right. He passed them, and kept running ahead of
them. He jumped up on a big rock and turned to face
the elephants as they ran toward him. Then he roared.

It was a mighty roar. It was louder even that the

mother elephant’s roar. It shook the ground. Mouse
hung on for dear life, and squeaked. He hid in Lion’s
fur. The elephants slowed down, and then they
stopped. They stopped right in front of Lion.

“Elephants!” Lion shouted. “There is no danger! You

have my word. Go back to your home.”

Slowly, the elephants began to turn around. They

headed back to their home.

Lion lay down on the rock and stretched himself out.

It was hot, and he was tired. Mouse hopped down and
sat beside him.

“For such a little mouse,” Lion said, “you certainly

caused a big problem.”

The Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing

In a dense forest, where the trees reach high into
the sky, lived a cunning and hungry wolf. Despite trying
many times, he had never managed to get close to the
tasty-looking sheep in the nearby meadow. Every time
he crept up, the sheep either recognized him
immediately and ran away, or the watchful shepherd
chased him away with his dogs.
One day, the wolf had an idea. “If I look like a
sheep, maybe they won’t notice me,” he thought. He
found the wool of a sheep that had died and pulled it
over his furry body. Now he looked just like a real sheep,
at least at first glance.
The disguised wolf slowly approached the herd.
“Baa,” he said quietly so as not to attract attention. The
sheep, who were grazing peacefully, did not notice. He
could hardly believe his luck!
“This is going to work!” he thought.
When evening came, the wolf followed the sheep into
the stable. The shepherd didn’t notice the intruder when
he counted his sheep before closing the stable door.
The wolf waited patiently until everyone grew quiet. In
the darkness, he crept up to one of the sheep. “Now
you’re mine,” he thought and licked his lips.
But just at that moment, the shepherd came back into
the stable. He had forgotten to select a sheep for the
market the next morning. Not recognizing the wolf, the
shepherd reached for him and pulled him by his wool.
The wolf was so surprised that he didn’t move
When the shepherd pulled away the sheepskin, he could
hardly believe his eyes.
“A wolf!” he shouted, startled. The wolf had been caught
and his plan had failed.

The Tortoise And The Hare

The hare was known throughout the forest for its
strength and speed. Effortlessly, he could cover long
distances in a very short time without breaking a sweat.
One day, the hare hobbled past a tortoise that was
laboriously making its way through the forest. The hare
stopped and started laughing.
“With your short feet and big shell, you are the slowest
animal I have ever seen! Take good care you don’t
accidentally fall asleep while you’re running!” cheered
the hare, holding his belly with laughter.
The tortoise was not swayed by the hare’s words. Slowly,
she continued to put one foot in front of the other.
“I really have to look very closely to tell if you are
moving or standing on the spot. How long does it take
you to walk ten yards? A whole day?” the hare continued
to bawl.
That’s when the tortoise stopped. “You go ahead and
make fun of me. So far, I’ve always arrived at my
destination. And if I think about it carefully, I even think
I would beat you in a race,” said the tortoise, smirking.
Hearing this, the hare rolled on the floor laughing. Only
after a few minutes did the hare calm down again and
agree to the race.
The two quickly agreed on the fox as the referee and
met a short time later at the old birch tree, the agreed
starting point of the race.
“Whoever arrives first at the big pond has won the race,”
the fox announced. “Are you ready? Three, two, one –
go!” he shouted and opened the race.
As if struck by lightning, the hare jumped off and hopped
away. After a short time he had already covered half the
distance. He turned around and found that the tortoise
had only advanced a few steps.
If it’s that easy, I still have enough time to make a short
detour to the carrot field,” thought the hare. To the
cheers of the watching animals, he hobbled straight to
the big field and nibbled a few carrots with relish.
When he got back to the running track after a few
minutes, he saw that the tortoise was still near the
starting line. With difficulty, it put one foot in front of the
other and slowly crawled through the forest.
“Now hurry up!” the hare called to her and turned
around. The birds, mice and foxes watching the
spectacle cheered the hare on. Prompted by the
applause of the audience, the hare performed several
tricks and daredevil jumps.
However, the numerous carrots and all the movement
had made the hare tired. Therefore, just before the finish
line, he lay down in the grass to rest a bit. No sooner
had he lain down than he was fast asleep.
Suddenly, he was jolted out of his reverie by loud cheers
and applause. He opened his eyes and could hardly
believe what he saw. The turtle set foot over the finish
line and had won the race.
“Congratulations, dear turtle. You have won the race!”
shouted the fox. All the animals of the forest
congratulated the turtle and celebrated the incredible
victory together with him.
