Bienvenido Tantoco Sr.

is half of the founders


of the department store Rustan’s. The other half is his
wife Gliceria Rustia Tantoco. The business started as a
display of goods in the couple’s living room and then
was expanded into a gift shop. The name of the
business is a portmanteau of the couple’s last names,
Rustia and Tantoco. The gift shop that was located in
San Marcelino St., Manila became a department
store after a decade that houses brands from
different categories such as accessories, apparel,
beauty and personal care, footwear, home, lifestyle
products, luggage, and watches.

The Rustan was the first to bring different international high-end fashion
brands to the Philippines. These include Yves Saint Laurent and Christian Dior.
They are also known as the main distributor of these international brands and that
was made possible by the establishment of Rustan Marketing Corporation. The
array of brands that followed are Lacoste, Lanvin, Gucci, etc. By the year 1970,
Rustan’s flagship store was opened in Makati and was often described as the
“Jewel Box” for its blue external tile work. During the 1970s to 1990s Rustan’s
Brand grew and opened five more stores and branches in the country. The
business grew into a group of companies and another famous branch is Rustan
Coffee which was one of the first operators of Starbucks Coffee outside the US.
Bienvenido the patriarch of the family died at the age of 100 on July 6, 2021.
