Title: Isolation of Crude Catalase Extract

I. Learning Objectives
 Determine its function.
 Observe the experiment.

II. Materials
A. Chemicals/Reagents
 Hydrogen Peroxide
 Hot Bath with a temperature of 90℃
 Water (Room Temperature)
 Potato

B. Glass wares
 Test Tube
 Test Tube Rack
 Beaker
 Dropper
 Clipper
 Container for potato
III. Procedure
1. Chop up some equally sized pieces of potato that can fit the test
tubes.
2. Add the one piece of potato per test tube.
 3. Place one of the test tubes in the hot bath. Leave it there for 5
minutes.
4. Add 3 milliliters of Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) to both test tubes.
Observe.

IV. Results and Observation

After the addition of 3 milliliters of Hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) both of

the potato in the test tubes produced bubbles but the one that is sitting in
the room temperature produced more bubbles than the one from the hot
bath.

V. Discussion

It is a crucial enzyme in the protection of the cell against oxidative

damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). At present, there are
two types of hydrogen peroxidase extraction methods used at home and
abroad: one is a production by microorganism fermentation catalase, and
the other is raw material hydrogen peroxidase extraction with animal
livers.
VI. Conclusion
Catalase is a widespread enzyme that catalyzes the breakdown of
hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen in practically all living creatures
exposed to oxygen (such as bacteria, plants, and animals). The first type
of extraction process is still in the experimental study stage; it belongs to
the short run, and does not have large-scale industrial production; the
second type is raw material with animal livers. Outward, the Chinese
patent ZL03152957.7 “a kind of method of extraction method hydrogen
peroxidase extracting” of Southern Yangtze University application and
number of the patent application are 02110792.0 the method for
hydrogen peroxidase extracting.”
