C.Discussing new concepts and Finding the Area of Composite Figures Follow the steps below in solving problems.
practicing new skills #1
A composite figure is a figure or shape that can be
divided into basic figures like squares, rectangles,
triangles, or trapezoids.
To find the area of a composite figure, first divide it
into basic figures. Then find the area of each basic
figure and get their sum.
Example 1: Find the area of the figure.

We can separate the figures into two: a triangle and

a square. Now, let us find the area of each figure.
Solution:

To get the area of the composite figure, add the area

of the triangle and the area of the square.

That is, A = 21 cm2 + 49 cm2

Therefore, the area of the composite figure is 70

cm2.
D.Discussing new concepts and Example 2:
practicing new skills #2 Find the area of the shaded region. Assume that all
angles that appear are right angles.

Solution:
From the figure, we can identify one square (Figure
B) and two rectangles (Figure A and Figure C).
Let us solve the area of each region.
Area of Figure A
A=lxw
= 10m x 6m
= 60 m2

Area of Figure B
A= s x s
= 4m x 4m
= 16m2
To get the area of the shaded region,
add the area of Figure A, FigureB, and Figure C.
That is, A = 60m2 + 16 m2 + 24 m2
(Figure A) (Figure B) (Figure C)
A = 100 m2
Therefore, the area of the shaded region is 100 m2.

Example 3: Find the area of the shaded region.

Use π = 3.14.

Solution:
*Find the area of the square.
A=sxs
= 12 in x 12 in
A = 144 in2

*Find the area of the circle.

The diameter of the circle is 12 inches, so the radius
is 6 inches.
A=πxrxr
= 3.14 x 6 in x 6 in
= 3.14 x 36 in2
A = 113.04 in2
To get the area of the shaded region, subtract the
area of the circle from the area of the square.
That is, A = A (square) – A (circle)
= 144 in2 – 113.04 in2
A = 30.96 in2
Therefore, the area of the shaded region is 30.96 in2.
