Science, Technology, and Society (E0182)

I. LEARNING ACTIVITIES

1. What is the role of indigenous science in the development of S&T in the Philippines? (10pts)
Indigenous Science has a very crucial part in the development of
Science and Technology.
 Indigenous Science is the scientific knowledge of all people who are
cultural participants and are affected by the worldview and interests of
their home communities and homeland.
 The traditional component of wisdom includes values and ways of
decision making scientifically.
 They believe in time-tested approaches.
 They order by sustainability and environmental integrity.
 Indigenous science is important that it helped the people in
understanding the natural environment and in coping with everyday
life.

2. How do society and culture influence the development of S & T? (10 pts)

Technology and science are most frequently influenced by society and economic
development. A society with a good culture and economic growth is evolving very rapidly
in every respect. The growing and changing economic position is a symbol of the
development of science and technology. A society with an advanced culture needs a lot
of technologies to deal with other governments, society, the world. So "need" is what
urges the involvement of science and technology in these exposed areas when setting
up some kind of business.

II. ASSIGNMENT

Discuss the importance of preserving indigenous knowledge. As a student, how can you
contribute to the preservation of indigenous knowledge? (20pts)

Indigenous knowledge can help to meet the broader objectives of society, for instance
conserving the environment, developing sustainable agriculture and ensuring food security,
while its protection encourages the maintenance of traditional practices and lifestyles.
Indigenous knowledge is the basis for local level decision-making in food security,
human and animal health, education, NRM, and other vital economic and social
activities.
As most indigenous peoples have a strong oral tradition, it may be that collecting and
transcribing an oral record of their experiences and culture may be the most robust means
of accurately reflecting their knowledge for future researchers. As much of this knowledge
will be held tacitly, the compilation of the 'trigger' questions and interview techniques will
need to be carefully constructed.
