UNIT 7: ARTISTS

LESSON 7H – WRITING: A SCHOOL MAGAZINE ENTRY

I. OBJECTIVES

By the end of this lesson, Ss will be able to:

1. Knowledge

- Analyze and interpret a school magazine entry on The Hunger Games, focusing on its
content, style, and structure.

- Grasp exam strategies for engaging readers, especially in terms of attracting attention
and organizing articles effectively.

- Acquire and utilize vocabulary for describing stories and narratives.

2. Competences

- Demonstrate proficiency in writing a book review suitable for a school magazine,


targeting the intended audience with an appropriate style.

- Master the skill of crafting an engaging introduction to captivate the reader's attention.

- Structure the written piece effectively, ensuring clarity and coherence throughout.

3. Personal qualities

- Exhibit creativity and attention to detail when selecting an appropriate title for the book
review.

- Cultivate the ability to express opinions and insights about literature in a clear and
engaging manner, fostering a love for reading and critical thinking.

- Grade 11 textbook, Unit 7, Writing

- Computer connected to the Internet

III. PROCEDURES

1. ACTIVITY 1: WARM-UP (2 mins)

a. Objectives:

- Introduce the new lesson and set the scene for Ss to acquire new language.

- Engage students from the start of the class to capture their attention.

- Tap into students' prior knowledge.

- Foster students' confidence and enthusiasm for the lesson.

b. Content:

- Students write on index cards, discuss and report orally.

Book genres (1 mins)

- Ask students to brainstorm as many book genres as Responses from Ss


they can in one minute.

- Ask students to call out book titles. The other students


must guess the genre of the book, e.g. ‘Twilight –
Breaking Dawn.’ ‘It’s a love story / fantasy novel.’

Exercise 1 (1 mins)

- In pairs, students discuss the last books they read, Responses from Ss
answering the questions. Encourage them to give

detailed answers.

- Elicit some answers.

- Teacher observes the groups and give sfeedback.

2. ACTIVITY 2: PRE-WRITING (20 mins)

a. Objectives:

- Ss know how to organize ideas and information effectively.

- Ss understand the writing strategy.

- Ss gain some useful phrases to write an interesting entry.

b. Content:

- Exercises 2-5.

c. Products:

- Ss take notes of new phrases, discuss with their friends, complete exercises in their books.

Exercise 2 (2 mins)

- Ask students to read the instructions, the task and the


article. They then work in pairs to answer the questions.

- Elicit some answers. Then ask: Does the entry make


you want to read the book? If you have already read it,
do you think the writer could have said anything
different?

- For weaker students, explain the word ‘reservations’ in


the question.

Exercise 3 (8 mins)

- Ask students to read the first point in Writing Strategy
1 and the first paragraph of the article and answer the
questions. Elicit answers.

- Ask students to read the second point in Writing


Strategy 1 and to read the task in exercise 2 again. Ask:
What style would you use in a school magazine?
(informal). Elicit the answers to the questions.

- Students read the third point in Writing Strategy 1 and


choose the best title. They should use the words and
phrases to justify their choice and explain why they
have rejected the other options. Elicit some ideas.

Exercise 4 (5 mins)

- Ask students to read Writing Strategy 2 and answer the


questions.

- Check answers as a class.

Exercise 5 (5 mins)

- Ask students to read the entry again and note down the
tense.

- Check the answer as a class. Explain that the present


simple is often used in book and film reviews.

e. Assessment

- Teacher checks students’ pronunciation and gives feedback.

- Teacher checks students’ understanding of writing strategy.

- Teacher observes Ss’ writing of vocabulary on their notebooks.

- Teacher observes group work and gives feedback.

3. ACTIVITY 3: WHILE WRITING (16 mins)

a. Objectives:

- Ss can write an entry about their favorite book.

b. Content:

- Exercises 6 and 7.

c. Products:

- Students’ writings.

d. Organization

Exercise 6 (6 mins)

- Students read the article again and complete the


phrases.

- Check answers as a class and check the meaning


of twists and turns (unexpected changes or
developments in a story) and page-turner (an
exciting book).

Exercise 7 (10 mins)

- Give students a few minutes to plan their entry. Student’s performance


Tell them to work out their paragraph plan using
Writing Strategy 2 for guidance.

- Students write their magazine entry.

- When students have finished writing, ask them to


edit their work using the Check your work box

- Teacher observation on Ss’ performance.

4. ACTIVITY 4: POST-WRITING (5 mins)

a. Objectives:

- Ss can improve their writing based on feedback.

b. Content:

- Check your work.

c. Products:

- Students take notes of their mistakes and how to improve their writing.

d. Organization

Check your work (5 mins)

- Ss exchange their writings in pairs to give feedback to Feedback from T


their friends’ writings. Ideas from peer review
- T gives feedback without saying who made the errors.

- T selects randomly some writings to assess and gives


more detailed feedback in the next class.

5. CONSOLIDATION (2 mins)

a. Wrap-up

- If T is using the Classroom Presentation Tool, first do the lesson closer to review what has
been covered in this lesson.

- T asks students: What have you learned today? What can you do now? and elicit answers: I
can write a book review for a school magazine. I can attract the reader’s attention in the first
paragraph, use an appropriate style for my target audience, structure my text and choose a
good title.

- Prepare for the next lesson.
