Introduction
The global community recognized that Solid Waste Management (SWM) is an issue that
requires serious attention. The aggressive pursuit for economic growth, by developing countries
like the Philippines, has resulted in the manufacture, distribution and use of products and
generation of wastes that contributes to environmental degradation and global climate change.
Particularly in Surigao City, with a total land area of 254.34 square kilometers and a population
of 152, 543 (2014 data) according to the Socio-economic Profile of 2014 has been experiencing
this issue. And among these numbers, one of the areas that faced the problem of proper waste
disposal is in elementary schools, particularly in the urban areas which have large numbers of
student population.
Every school generates waste arising from routine activities such as class work,
projects, etc. The common types of solid wastes found in various schools include paper, folders,
candy wrappers, empty bottles, snack wrappers, and the like. Nowadays, inappropriate solid
waste management practices in schools constitutes one of the major factors leading to declining
environmental health conditions. Major problems perceived with the current situation are the
improper disposal of garbage, their attitude to dispose their trash properly, and their willingness
in keeping themselves and the environment clean. The problems associated with the disposal of
wastes in schools are numerous which includes littering.
Common methods of solid waste disposal are the use of trash can for collection and
open burning, but open burning causes community environmental health nuisance and can
compromise school environmental quality. Then after their homes, schools constitute the next
most important place of learning and where children spend most of their time, in particular
indoors for study and outdoors while at play. Therefore, the researchers come up to create an
Electronic Trash Can that emphasizes the use of innovative electronics.
Objectives
Trash management is an integral part of our daily lives. Just by doing simple everyday
tasks like cooking or cleaning, we generate a substantial amount of waste. However, without
proper monitoring, waste can stagnate in our trash cans, leading to unpleasant odors that spread
throughout the household. A possible solution is to take out the trash frequently, but that may
also be wasteful if the trash can is mostly empty. Likewise, different amounts of waste are
generated day by day, so predicting exactly when to take out the trash becomes more difficult.
Moreover, since the average person generates roughly 4.6 pounds of trash a day, the frequency in
which we need to check and maintain our trash cans becomes greater. Our goal is to improve the
trash can by automating parts of the trash management process. We will integrate a
microcontroller, sensors, as well as servos to a small waste bin. Using an ultrasonic sensor placed
under the lid of our trash can, we can detect the level of waste.

5.1 General Objective

This study aims to develop an electronic-based garbage can that has an automatic features
with the help of sensors.

5.2 Specific Objectives

5.1.1 To design a garbage can that can detect when it is full by using ultrasonic
sensor.
5.1.2 To design a garbage can that automatically opens once a swipe is detected
with the help of ultrasonic sensor.

Key Result Areas

 To increase market, share and become the market leader.
 To maximize profits
 To delight costumers with high quality of product.
 To increase product recognition and awareness.
 To stay a market leader through technological innovation and make the RIP Company a
better place to work in.
Beneficiaries

The proposed project aims to develop an embedded system based trash can that
encourages people to dispose their garbage properly and responsibly. Through this, there is a
chance to lessen environmental problems; such as clogging of sewage that causes flooding.

Below are the beneficiaries of our study:

Students – They are the focus of the research and are usual to experience health
problems that were caused by inappropriate garbage dumping.
Parents – They hold the responsibility with the children’s health.
Teachers – It could help the teachers to surely maintain the cleanliness in their
respected classrooms, and
Consumers – They can purchase the newly-improve garbage bin in the market
for very reasonable price.
Society – People in the community will experience a clean and safe environment
with this garbage bin.
Researchers – The researchers can gain more knowledge about the concept used.
