Few Reasons You Should be Talking About Multigrade Oil

Multigrade engine oil is engine oil that performs well at low or high temperatures. It is
manufactured by blending and mixing a base oil i.e., synthetic oil or mineral oil with
an additive known as the Viscosity Index Improver. Due to this, a multigrade engine
oil stays fluid at a lower temperature, but at a higher temperature, the oil won’t become too
thin. This shows that the lubrication film of a multigrade doesn’t break down even at the
highest operational temperature.

Advantages
We would be discussing the benefits of using multigrade oil for engines:
 The wide-ranging operating temperature range makes it appropriate for year-round
use
 Multigrade oil can enhance lower temperature cranking in cold weather
 It helps in less battery drain
 It has outstanding performance at high temperatures
 It is designed for longer oil change intervals due to enhanced oxidation stability
 It reduces oil consumption by needing lesser idle time and by supplying high-speed
temporary shear thinning
 It drastically minimizes engine wear and tears by extending faster lubrication

Types of Multigrade Oils

Multigrade oils are basically available in three types:
 Mineral Multigrade: A mineral multigrade engine oil is made up of light-
weight mineral oil as the base oil. Conventional engine oil is derived from crude oil
that has excellent properties to enhance the lubrication of engine parts even at high
temperatures. Manufacturers usually add a Viscosity Index Improver to maintain the
conventional motor oil fluid at low temperatures and heavy even under high
temperatures. Viscosity Improvers thicken the mineral oil. When the oil heats up, it
enables the multigrade to support more load in adverse operating conditions.
 Semi-Synthetic Multigrade: Oil manufacturers produce semi-synthetic motor
oil by blending mineral oil with a synthetic oil base. Consequently, the synthetic
mixture offers sufficient lubrication for longer and produces less acidic by-
products that may wear down your engine parts. Another advantage of semi-
synthetic oil is that it offers better fuel economy at lower prices.
 Fully Synthetic Multigrade: A fully synthetic motor oil is distilled, refined, and
purified by various oil manufacturers at a molecular level. It is made ideal for any
modern petrol or diesel engine. As synthetic oil has a higher viscosity index than
conventional mineral oil. It is very less impacted by temperature change. It requires a
lower amount of oil additive to keep the oil fluid under operating
temperature. Additionally, synthetic base oils are devoid of impurities, these can be
used in motorsports and extreme climate conditions.

Using the right multigrade oil is a vital step in perfecting your vehicle’s performance. You
should do regular oil changes and maintenance.
