HPS: High-Pressure Sodium Vapor Lamps
Notes: a. The values shown above are minimum maintained average values. A 25% depreciation
allowance should be added to these values for lamp deterioration, dirty ambient
conditions, etc.
b. Unless otherwise indicated, lighting shall be high pressure sodium (HPS) luminaries for
high bay and outdoor lighting and fluorescent luminaries for low bay and indoor lighting.

5. CALCULATION METHODE
5.1 Lumen Method
The method used to calculate the lumens of illumination which represents an average
illumination at all points on the working plane in the room.
The Steps calculation illumination level in the room using the lumen method is as follows:

Step 1 Determine the Room Cavity Ratio (RCR)

5 × hRC × ( L + W )
RCR =
L ×W

Where: RCR = Room Cavity Ratio

L = Length of room (m)
W = Width of room (m)
hRC = High light point of the working plane (m)
Step 2 Determine Effective reflections from the ceiling (ρ cc) and Wall (ρ w)
Step 3 Determining the Coefficient of Utilization (CU)
Step 4 Determine Lamp Lumens (LL) from the catalog
Step 5 Determine the Minimum Number of Lamps (Nt)

E× A
Nt =
CU × LL × LLF
Where: Nt = Number of Lights
CU = Coefficient of Utilization
LL = Lumens/Lamp (lumen)
E = Maintained footcandle desire (lux)
A = Area (m2)
LLF = Light Loss Factor, assumed to be: 0.75.

LEVEL CALCULATION REV :0

PAGE : 8 of 11

Step 6 Numbers of Lamps (Nr).

Step 7 Determine Average Illumination Levels are Reached (Eav).

E × N r N r × LL × CU × LLF
Eav = =
Nt A

Where: Eav = Average Illumination Levels are Reached (lux)

E = Maintained footcandle desire (lux)
Nt = Number of Minimum Light
Nr = Number of Lights
CU = Coefficient of Utilization
LL = Lumens/Lamp (lumen)
A = Area (m2)
LLF = Light Loss Factor, assumed to be: 0.75.

5.2 Point-by-Point Method

This method is used to calculate the outdoor illumination (without the influence of reflections
from the ceiling and walls). This calculation is not used to calculate the illumination on the road.
The Steps calculation of the level of illumination of outdoor use poiny by-point method is as
follows:

L2
A

Φ
R
H L1

A
P L

SIDE TOP
VIEW VIEW

Step 1 Determine the point where the level of illumination will be calculated (point A).
Step 2 Determine the amount of φ and H
Step 3 Determine the amount of candlepower of light on φ from the photometric data
obtained from the catalog.
Step 4 Calculate the level of illumination (E) at point A

cd × cosφ × LLF cd × cos3 φ × LLF

E at A = =
R2 H2

Where: E = level of illumination (lux)

JOB NO :

LIGHTING ILLUMINATION DOC. NO : TMGT-DRP-E3-CS-001

LEVEL CALCULATION REV :0

PAGE : 9 of 11

Cd = Candlepower of light (candela)

φ = Angle between the point "P" and "A"
LLF = Light Loss Factor, it is assumed: 0.6
R = Distance Inclination (m)
H = High light point (m)
Step 5 Compare the calculation result E to illumination level requirement at the designated
point. If the calculation result E is lesser than illumination level requirement, might
be needed to add another lighting fixture.
Step 6 Do step 1 – 4 and add the result to the previous result attained.
Step 7 Do step 6. Calculation terminated when the result of E is bigger than required
illumination level.

5.3 Lighting the Way Method

This method is used to calculate the illumination on street lighting.The steps on the street
lighting illumination calculation is as follows:
Step 1 Calculate the ratio of high-lights

Road Width
Mounting Height _ Light Ratio =
Pole Height

Where:
Road Width and Pole Height are in meter.

Step 2 Calculate Coefficient of Utilization (CU) by using a high-light ratio values obtained in
step1
Step 3 Determine the Light Loss Factor of the lamp (LLF), is assumed: 0.6
Step 4 Determine Lamp Lumens (LL) is obtained from the catalog.
Step 5 Calculate the level of illumination or Illumination Level (IL).

LL × CU × LLF
IL =
Pole Spacing × Road Width

Where :
IL = Illumination level (lux)
LL = Lamp Lumen (lumen)
CU = Coefficient of Utilization
LLF = Light Loss Factor
