Question (1)
A simply supported reinforced concrete beam of rectangular cross-section is shown in the
figure below. The beam is reinforced with 3-30M bars at the bottom. The beam supports a
uniform dead load (DL) of 9 kN/m (including the beam self-weight) and a uniform live load
(LL) of 9 kN/m. Ignore the e6ects of the support width.
(A) Find the following design parameters:
a) maximum immediate deflection due to the total service load
b) Maximum immediate deflection due to the dead load only
c) Maximum deflection due to the live load only
d) Maximum long-term deflection due to the total load after 6 years of service life
Use the CSA A23.3 approximate procedure to determine the deflections.

Assume
f’c = 25 MPa (normal-density concrete)
LL = 9 kN/m fy = 400 MPa
DL = 9 kN/m

(B) Assume that the beam supports architectural elements that are likely to be
damaged due to large deflections.

a) Are the beam deflections within the limits prescribed by CSA A23.3?
b) Suppose that the architectural elements are installed 1 year after the construction.
Find the maximum long -term deflection for this beam after the architectural
elements have been installed.
c) Comment on the e6ect of the installation schedule for architectural components on
the magnitude of long-term deflections.
d) Find out whether the detailed deflection calculations is required in this case and
explain your answer.

Question (2)
The T-beam cross-section shown below is reinforced with 6-30M tension rebars at the
bottom.
a) Determine whether the beam natural axis is in the flange or the web of the beam.
b) Analys the beam as a rectangular section and find the factored moment resistance
(regardless of the neutral axis is in the flange or not)
c) Analys the beam as a T-section and find the factored moment resistance.
d) Compare between both moment resistance (from part b and Part c) and comment on
the results.

Assume
f’c = 25 MPa (normal-density concrete)
fy = 400 MPa
