Silver Lakes Garden Club

March 13, 2024

The meeting was called to order at 3:20 pm in the Silver Lakes Clubhouse by
Co-Chair Peggy Shereda. 24 members were present in addition to our BOD liaison,
Karen Browne. Minutes from our February 28, 2024 meeting having been distributed via
email were approved: motion, Claire Rathjen; second, Darlene Neff.

FINANCIAL REPORT: Elaine Funderburk reported a balance of $9725.65 as of March

1, 2024.
INCOME: $181.00 (3/5/24 bake sale)
EXPENSES: $593.49 ( Memorial Garden Plantings and Solar Light.)
ENDING BALANCE: $9313,16

COMMITTE REPORTS:
Plant Management: Mary-Jo Kolde noted that the middle gardenia at the Happy
Valley Pool is infested with spider mites. She will apply a systemic soil treatment as well
as spraying the leaves to correct this problem. Team #4 will be watering the week of
April 15, 2024, which is our last ‘club’ watering week. They will apply Osmocote instead
of the liquid fertilizer to give long term feeding. Margaret and Peggy will check with the
office to see if Denny Huss will once again look after our plantings over the summer
months.
Education: Jane Barry passed around an ‘idea’ sheet to gather ideas of interest for a
speaker line up next year.
Social: Serena White reminded the membership of our planned ‘tea’ at Jolene’s home
following our meeting. Wednesday, March 27th will be our last formal meeting this
season and will be followed with a ‘light grazing meal’ for all the membership to enjoy.
We will be advised of the cost of this meal.
Membership: Margaret Raake announced that she and her husband will be moving
from Silver Lakes and she will no longer be a part of our ‘family.’ We have each known
Margaret’s work ethic, baking skills, landscaping knowledge, and loving friendship…so
it goes without saying how dearly she will be missed.
Memorial Garden: Gloria Padula reported that there will be one more order placed
for memorial bricks in the near future. She thanked Bob Raake for trailering the plants
and other supplies purchased for the new Memorial Garden site. (Apparently the rabbits
are enjoying this site also!!) The plaque for the center rock is to arrive soon and a
Rededication Ceremony will be scheduled to consecrate this new site. A solar light is
ordered as well as a flagpole which will be installed by Paul Markert and our resort work
staff.
Bake sale: Joyce Braungart reported that the bake sale made $188 during hot dogs
March 8th.

NEW BUSINESS:
Sunflower Judging: Since the sunflower plants sold this year were both mini and
regular sunflower plants, we will expand our prize categories to tallest plant, largest
sunflower and most sunflowers on a plant. Gloria Padula, Sandy Mattonen and Mary-Jo
Kolde will adjudicate this contest and will supply pictures of the winning entries.

OLD BUSINESS:
Major Event, January 18, 2025: Sandy Mattonen and Kathy Bisonic graciously
stepped forward to co-chair our event for 2025. Ideas generated for this fund raiser:
“Woodstock '' Theme (looking for a name for this event); evening of music and dance
with perhaps dessert served; contact Jason DeSimone for our musical entertainment. Eve
Dye has kindly offered to donate her decorated bird houses for either decorations or door
prizes. All members are committed to assisting Sandy and Kathy in this important
function of our garden club.

Our final garden club meeting of this season will be held on Wednesday, March 24th,
3:15 pm at the Silver Clubhouse. All committee chairpersons should have their end of
year reports ready for presentation with a pdf copy sent to Kathy Bisonic for our website.
Following the meeting, we will enjoy fellowship and a “grazing table” provided by our
Social Committee.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:09 pm.

Respectively submitted,

Mary-Jo Kolde, Secretary www.slgardenclub.weebly.com
