=(2.7+1.5)x10^6 =8.2/4.5 = 1.8
= 4.2x10^6 = 10^7/10^3= 10^7-3= 10^4
3) (7.21 x 10^4) – (4.01 x 10^1) = 1.8x10^4

= 7.21x10^4= (7.21x10^3)x10^1 = 7210x10^1
=7210x10^1 – 4.01x10^1
=(7210-4.01)x10^1
= 7205.99x10^1
=7.20599x10^1
Note: 2.0 x 10^3 is also equal to 2.0 x 103

TEST III: PROBLEM SOLVING: Show your complete solution and encircle/box/highlight your final answer in a statement
form.
1. In Taal Lake, Francis sailed 4 kilometers on his new boat. His cousin, Mark, sailed 7,500 meters on his
boat. Who rode the farthest? How much farther in meters did that person ride?
a.) Convert km to m b.) Solve the difference in distance
Solution: 4 km x (1000m/1km) = 4000 m Solution: 7 500m – 4 000m = 3 500m
Answer: Mark rode the farthest, he rode 3 500m farther than his cousin Francis.
2. Louis wants to send a box of apples to a friend by mail. The box of apples cannot exceed a mass of 8 kg,
What is the maximum number of apples he can send by mail, if each apple has a mass of 250 g?
a.) Convert kg to g b.) Solve
Solution: 8 kg x (1ooo g/ 1 kg)= 8000g Solution: 8000g/ 250g = 32 apples
Answer: The maximum apples that he can send is 32 apples each with a mass of 250g.
3. Mary purchased a reel of thread for sewing. There are 8 m of thread on the reel. She uses 370 cm today.
How much is left on the reel in centimeters?
a.) Convert m to cm b.) Solve the Difference
Solution: 8kg x (1000g/1kg) = 8000g Solution: 800 cm – 370cm= 430 cm
Answer: There are 430 cm left on the reel of thread.
4. Benedict has 2.1 meter long piece of rod. He wants to cut it into 6 equal lengths. How long should each
piece of rod be in millimeters?
a.) Convert m to mm b.) Solve
Solution: 2.1m x (1mm/ 0.001m)= 2100 mm Solution: 2100 mm/ 6= 350 mm each
Answer: Each piece of rod should be 350 mm.
5. It takes Joey 8 hours to wash every window on a school building. There are 96 windows. How many minutes
does it take Joey to wash each window?
a.) Convert hours to minutes b.) Solve
Solution: 8 hr x (60 mins/ 1 hr)= 480 mins Solution: 480 mins/ 96= 5 mins
Answer: Joey will take 5 minutes to wash each window.
6. Nancy’s boyfriend gave her a 2 lb heart-shaped box of chocolates. The box had 50 pieces of chocolate.
What was the average mass in grams of each cholocate in the box?
a.) Convert lb to g b.) Solve
Solution: 2lbs x (453.592g/ 1 lb) = 907.185 g Solution: 907.185 g/ 50= 18.1g
Answer: The average of each mass of chocolate is 18.1437 g.
7. The temperature of hot water was measured in one experiment. Different people measured the same
container of hot water with different thermometers. The following readings are provided: 72oC, 75oC, 70oC,
69oC, 66oC, 65oC, 165.2oF, 159.8oF, 154.4oF, and 347.15 K. What is the standard deviation of the set of
values in oC?
a.) Convert all to oC
Solution:
72oC = 72oC
75oC = 75oC
70oC = 70oC
69oC = 69oC
66oC = 66oC
65oC = 65oC
165.2oF = 165.2 oF = (165.2 oF – 32) ÷ 1.8 = 74oC
159.8oF = 159.8oF = (159.8oF – 32) ÷ 1.8 = 71oC
154.4oF = 154.4oF = (154.4oF – 32) ÷ 1.8 = 68oC
347.15 K = 347.15 K − 273.15 = 74oC

b.) get x
Solution: 72+75+70+69+66+65+74+71+68+74
10
= 704/10
X = 70.4 oC

c.) Standard Deviation

s= (72-70.4)^2 + (75-70.4)^2 + (70-70.4)^2 + (69-70.4)^2 + (66-70.4)^2 + (65-70.4)^2
(74-70.4)^2 + (71-70.4)^2 + (68-70.4)^2 + (74-70.4)^2
10-1

S = 3.44 oC
Answer: The standard deviation of this set of values is 3.4 oC.
