Answer: the sum is 180°

E. Abstraction

Properties of Parallelogram

1. Opposite sides are congruent and parallel

A B

M.L.Q St Bagumbayan, Taguig City

D C
When we say congruent, the symbol we should is≅
𝐴𝐵 ≅ 𝐷𝐶
𝐴𝐷 ≅ 𝐵𝐶
While Parallel is
𝐴𝐵 ǁ𝐷𝐶
𝐴𝐷 ǁ𝐵𝐶

Example 1:

ABCD is a parallelogram. If the measure of AB is 23 and DC is 8x -1, find x.

Solution:

8𝑥 − 1 = 23 Formulate the equation

8𝑥 = 23 + 1 Transpose the 1, then simplify
8𝑥 = 24 Simplify
= both side divide to 8
𝑥=3 simplify

Example 2:

Find the value of x to make the quadrilateral a parallelogram. Then solve the given
sides.

Step 1: Formulate the equation

3𝑥 + 5 = 6𝑥 − 10

Step 2: Solve for x

3𝑥 + 5 = 6𝑥 − 10 formulate the equation

3𝑥 − 6𝑥 = −10 − 5 transpose
BAGUMBAYAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
M.L.Q St Bagumbayan, Taguig City

−3𝑥 = −15 simplify

= both sides divide to -3
𝑥=5 the value of x is 5

Step 3: Checking

Lets check if the given equation of the both sides are congruent

3𝑥 + 5 = 3(5) + 5 substitute the value of x

= 15 + 5 simplify
= 20 therefore, line segment LO is 20 units

6𝑥 − 10 = 6(5) − 10 substitute
= 30 − 10 simplify
= 20 line segment VE is 20 units
Therefore, line segment LO is congruent to line segment VE. Each side of the given
sides measure 20units, thus the figure is parallelogram

2. Opposite angle is congruent

The ∠L is congruent to ∠V, then ∠E is congruent to ∠O

3. Consecutive angles are supplementary

Consecutive means following continuously, in the figure the consecutive angles are;

∠L and ∠O, ∠O and ∠V, ∠V and ∠E, and last is ∠E and ∠L. It can be counter clockwise
or clockwise.

Any pair of consecutive angles are supplementary meaning the sum of their measures
is 180°.

Example
BAGUMBAYAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
M.L.Q St Bagumbayan, Taguig City

SIDE is a parallelogram. If m∠S = 30 find the measure of the other 3 angles.

Solution:

Step 1: Draw and mark the given.

Step 2: Identify the relationship of each angle to ∠S.

∠D is opposite of ∠S, then m∠S = m∠D, m∠D = 30

∠E is consecutive to ∠S, then

m∠E + m∠S = 180
m∠E + 30 = 180
m∠E = 180 – 30
m∠E = 150

∠I is consecutive to ∠D, then

m∠I + m∠D = 180
m∠I+ 30 = 180
m∠I = 180 – 30
m∠I = 150

4. The Diagonals bisect each other

Thus, EK = (EO) and OK = (EO), same as the other.

Example
BAGUMBAYAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
M.L.Q St Bagumbayan, Taguig City

COLD is a parallelogram. Its diagonal bisect each other at point E. If CE measures

12dm, how long is CL and EL?

Mentally, you can answer it by using properties, the CL measures 24 and EL is 12, but
showing the solution

1
𝐶𝐸 = 𝐶𝐿
2
1
12𝑑𝑚 = 𝐶𝐿
2

2(12)𝑑𝑚 = 𝐶𝐿
24𝑑𝑚 = 𝐶𝐿

Therefore, CL is measure of 24dm, then CE = EL meaning EL is 12dm.

Example: Find the value of the variable that will make quadrilateral a parallelogram.

Solution:

3𝑥 − 7 = 2𝑥 5𝑦 − 3 = 2𝑦 + 9
3𝑥 − 2𝑥 = 7 5𝑦 − 2𝑦 = 9 + 3
𝑥=7 3𝑦 = 12
𝑦=4

Lets check:

3𝑥 − 7 5𝑦 − 3
3(7) − 7 5(4) − 3
21 − 7 20 − 3
= 14 = 17

2𝑥 2𝑦 + 9
2(7) 2(4) + 9
= 14 8+9
= 17

F. Application

Quadrilateral SHOW is a parallelogram. Find the value of x when ∠H = (23x + 5)° and
∠O = (13x – 5)°. Draw and mark the given.

Solution/Answer:

Step 2: Identify the relationship of the given

∠H and ∠O are consecutive, so they must be supplementary

Step 3: Formulate an equation, then solve

23𝑥 + 5 + 13𝑥 − 5 = 180

36𝑥 = 180, both side divide to 36
𝑥=5

23𝑥 + 5 13𝑥 − 5
23(5) + 5 13(5) − 5
115 + 5 65 − 5
∠H =120 ∠O = 60

Therefore, ∠H = 120 and ∠O is 60. Thus ∠H ≅ ∠W and ∠O ≅ ∠S.

G. Assignment

Direction: In ½ crosswise solve and draw the following.

LOVE is a parallelogram. If m∠O = y, m∠E = 86, m∠VLO = 30 and m∠EVL = 2x, Find x, y,
z and m∠OVL
