LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS

GRADE: 4 QUARTER: 2 WEEK: 8 DAY: 2

COMPETENCY &
OBJECTIVES : The learner rounds decimal numbers to the nearest whole number and
tenths (M4NS-IIj-103.1)
CONTENT : Rounding Decimal Numbers
LEARNING Q2 Learning Activity Sheet week 8 day 2
RESOURCES : Final MELC p. 213
Mathematics 4 Learning Material pp. 149-151
PROCEDURE : A. Preparation
Drill
Have a game on identifying the place value of the underlined digit.
Materials: flash cards of decimal numbers
Mechanics:
a. Divide the class into groups of two.
b. Flash the cards one at a time.
c. Each pupil answers what’s on the card.
d. Check the pupils’ answers. The pupil with the most number of
correct answers wins.
Review
Review on rounding whole numbers.
Number Round to Tens Round to Hundreds
1. 456
2. 575
3. 682
4. 735
5. 848

B. Motivation
Have the pupils walk 5 steps forward and backward for 2 or 3 minutes.
Ask:
How did you find the activity?
Ask the pupils about the forms of exercises that are good for the body. Elicit
from them that exercising regularly is good for the body. This makes their
body physically and mentally fit in doing mathematical problems and
exercises.
C. Presentation
Present the situation below.
Cyryl and Cyrus were competing with each other to walk a
distance in one minute. Cyryl recorded a distance of 16.67 meters
while Cyrus had a distance of 14.45 meters. Who walked a longer
distance in one minute?

Ask:
Who were competing to walk in one minute?
How long did Cyryl walk?
How about Cyrus?
What is asked in the problem?
How will you find the answer to the problem?

Encourage the learner to work in pairs and give them time to solve for
the answer to the problem by illustration.
Distance in meters
Cyryl 16.67
Cyrus 14.45
Cyryl walked longer than Cyrus.
D.Discussion/Abstraction
Have the class work in pair. The pair who gets the most number of
correct answers wins.
1. Flash the cards one at a time. Let the pupils round the decimal to
nearest whole number.
1.7 2.7 3.20 4.08 5.86

2. Flash the cards one at a time. Let the pupils round the decimal to
the nearest tenths.
1.73 2.46 3.29 4.82 5.86

After all groups have played, ask, “How did you find the
activity? How did you round decimal numbers to the nearest
whole number and tenths?”

E. Exercises

Read the problem. Then, complete the table by rounding the decimal
numbers as indicated.

In a one-minute running contest, the distance covered by the runners is

recorded. The board shows the record of Sharon, Sheryl, and Dhina.

Contestant Distance in Round to the

Meters Nearest Whole Nearest Tenths
Number
Sharon 25.71
Sheryl 24.75
Dhina 23.78
F. Generalization
How do you round numbers to the nearest whole numbers and tenths?
---- To round the decimals to the nearest whole number and tenths:
a. Find the place where rounding to be done and
b. Look at the digit to the right of the rounding place.
If the digit is less than 5, round down. If the digit is equal to or
greater than 5, round up.
G. Application
Fill in the blanks.
1. 1.82 rounded to the nearest whole number is _______.
2. 6.08 rounded to the nearest whole number is _______.
3. 26.65 becomes ________ when rounded to the nearest tenths.
4. 25.68 rounded to the nearest tenths is _______.

H. Evaluation
Round the following decimal numbers to the place indicated:
Decimals Round to the Nearest Round to the Nearest
Whole Number Tenths
1) 1.56
2) 56.45
3) 3.45
4) 74.69
5) 5.72
