MATERIALS AND SUPPLIES
1. Yarn - Sport weight yarn (Fine yarn) for cotton+acrylic yarn or Fingering (Super fine
yarn) for 100% cotton yarn
Colors: mustard (approx. 10g), green (approx. 15g), brown (a few meters),
black (approx. 5g), red (approx. 1g), yellow (approx. 1g), white (approx. 5g),
pink (a few meters)

I used:
Schachenmayr Catania (50g/125m, 100% cotton):
Colors: mustard (0383 - zimt)
green (0412 - moos)
black (0110 - schwarz)
yellow (0208 - sonne)
white (0106 - weiß)

Yarn and Colors Must-have (50g/125m, 100% cotton):

Colors: brown (027 - brunet)
red (030 - red wine)

Scheepjes Catona (50g/125m, 100% cotton): pink - 408

2. Crochet hook suitable for your yarn (I used 1.75 mm Tulip)

3. Safety eyes 6 mm
4. Scissors, tapestry needle, pins
5. Brown or black embroidery or sewing thread (a few meters)
6. Stitch marker (I use a piece of yarn)
7. Fiberfill (stuffing)
8. Stuffing tool (I use wooden skewers and tweezers)
9. Wire 2 mm (I needed about 40 cm). It is best to use steel or copper wire as these
are the strongest, the most stable and durable options and bend easily
10. Strapping tape (about 1 m)
11. All-purpose glue (I used UHU)
12. A piece of plastic, to make the bottom steady (I used a lid of a plastic container)

SIZE OF THE TOY
If you use the materials and crochet hook indicated in the pattern, the toy will be approximately
15 cm (6 inches) tall.

TESTING RESULT

Crochet hook: 2.20 mm

Yarn: 8/4 cotton+acrylic (fine weight),
Yarn Art Jeans, Alize Cotton Gold
Size: 25.5 cm/10 inches tall
Modification: the pot string (bow) was made with 126 chains instead of 111 chains
as indicated in the pattern. Due to it, the bow is little bit bigger

DECREASES 1

In order to make an invisible decrease, insert the hook only

under the FRONT loop of one stitch, then under the FRONT loop
of the second stitch (p.1,2), yarn over and pull through these
two front loops (p.3), yarn over and pull through two loops left
on the hook (p.4).

2 3 4

COLOR CHANGE
Perform the color change on the second half of the previous stitch. When you make the last
stitch of the previous color: insert the hook, yarn over, pull through, pick the new color, yarn
over (p.5), pull through both loops on the hook (p.6). Continue working with the new color (p.7).

Use this method unless otherwise stated.

Before continuing to crochet, measure how much wire you will need. It should be inserted into
the tree and the pot and repeat the shape of the pot bottom. Roughly measure and cut the wire,
keep in mind that there will be also a stem and soil (p.19). Form the bottom part (p.20,21), bend
the top part (p.22). Put fiberfill around the wire and wrap it with strapping tape (p.23), the width
should be enough to fill the top of the tree.

19 20 21

22 23 24

Insert the wire, firmly stuff the tree, and continue crocheting (p.25).

Make regular decreases in the next round instead of invisible ones: pull a loop through one stitch,
pull a loop through the next stitch (p.26), yarn over, pull through 3 loops on the hook (p.27).

Cut the yarn off leaving a tail about 50 cm long for sewing.

ASSEMBLING
This is optional, but it will make the contraction more stable: glue the bottom wire to the plastic
circle (p.30), glue the circle to the bottom of the pot (p.31,32).

If you don’t want to use glue, just insert the plastic piece and wire inside the pot.

30 31 32

12

Stuff firmly. Sew the soil to the inner side of the pot (p.33). As we have 60 back loops left on the
inner side of the pot and 54 loops in the last row of the top, we will skip each 10th loop of the pot
(p.34). Fasten off and weave in the end.

33 34 35

Bend the top of the tree, with a black yarn create a guideline for the garland (p.36). First, we will
crochet the light bulbs on the tree following the guiding line and then embroider the string.

How to make the light bulbs:

The bulbs are made with a bobble stitch: a group of 3 incomplete double
crochet stitches into one stitch closed at the top. Turn the tree upside
down, insert your hook between the rounds and attach the yarn (p.37).
Ch 2 (p.38), yarn over, insert the hook into the same stitch, yarn over, pull
up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops on the hook (p.39), repeat 2 more
times, now we have 4 loops on the hook (p.40), yarn over and pull through
all 4 loops (p.41). Scan or click
to watch the video

Ch 1 (p.42), cut the yarn off and pull the thread out. Tie both ends together a few times (p.43)
and weave them in (p.44).

Continue making light bulbs following the guideline. You can use any colors you wish, I chose
yellow and red (p.45)

42 43 44

Attach black yarn to the 1st light bulb, make a stitch through the top of it (p.46), go to the next
bulb, for this and all the following bulbs: make a stitch through the top of the bobble stitch twice
(p.47,48). Continue attaching black yarn this way till the last bobble stitch.

Make one long stitch to finish the garland at the top of the tree and weave in the yarn end
(p.49,50).

(p.51).

Pull it through the holes we made in the 25th

round of the pot. I use a hook of a bigger size
(p.52) For the method I use to tie a bow the left
end should be a little shorter than the right
one. Watch this video to see how to tie a bow.

Work with white yarn. 55

Do NOT stuff the head.

4. (inc, 2 sc) * 6 (24)
5. 24 sc (24)

Stitches that are highlighted in mustard color should be worked with mustard yarn. Do not cut
the yarn off after the color change, leave it on the inside of the work till you need it again.
For the instructions on how to change yarn colors see page 8.

Fasten off mustard yarn.
To make it easier to insert the eyes, first make holes for them. I use a wooden skewer, insert it
between the stitches and widen the hole (p.56). The eyes will be between rounds 7 and 8 at a
distance of 6 stitches. Attach the safety eyes (p.57).

10. (dec, 1 sc) * 6 (12) 56 57

Cut the yarn off leaving 30-40

cm for sewing.

Embroider the nose with pink

yarn between rounds 8 and 9.
Make 2 horizontal stitches
(p.58). Embroider a mouth with
brown/black embroidery or sewing thread as shown in the p.59-63).
With the same thread embroider eyelashes (p.64-66) (there should be no ears at this moment,
thought you can see them on the photos))

Insert your hook into the marked point (p.68), attach black
yarn (p.69), make 1 sc, ch 2, from the 2n ch from the hook
1 sl st, make 1 sc into the same stitch on the head. Pull up
a loop, insert the needle one round above (between rounds
2 and 3), pull it out at the point where you starting (where
you have a yarn tail left) (p.70). Tie the ends together a few
times and weave them in (p.71).

69 70 71

Right ear

The right ear is done almost in the same way, but we insert the hook 1 round above the pin
(p.72) and after crocheting the ear insert the needle into the marked point (p.73,74).

Stuff the head firmly.

Make as many sc as you need to reach the marked stitch (I had 1 sc), insert
your hook through the marked stitches (p.83) and make a sl st (p.84). This sl st will not be
counted as a stitch, it only divides the body in half.

Turn the work and crochet the right arm (p.84,85).
