FOREWORD

With the introduction of the ALS K to 12 Basic Education

Curriculum, the author aims to contribute to the develop-
ment of new materials to supplement textbooks, refer-
ence materials, and internet-based materials together
with other learning materials that ALS teachers may ac-
cess and use. The author is an experienced ALS learning

WHAT TO LEARN?
Computer
A computer is a machine or
device that performs pro-
cesses, calculations and oper-
ations based on instructions
provided by a software or
hardware program. It has the
ability to accept data (input),
process it, and then produce
outputs.
Computers can also store
data for later uses in appropri-
ate storage devices, and re-
trieve whenever it is neces-
sary.
Modern computers are electronic devices used for a vari-
ety of purposes ranging from browsing the web, writing
documents, editing videos, creating applications, playing
video games, etc.
They are designed to execute applications and provide a
variety of solutions by combining integrated hardware
and software components.

Characteristics of Computer
Speed

A computer works with much

higher speed and accuracy com-
pared to humans while performing
mathematical calculations. Com-
puters can process millions
(1,000,000) of instructions per second. The time taken by
computers for their operations is microseconds and nano-
seconds.

Accuracy

Computers perform calculations

with 100% accuracy. Errors may oc-
cur due to data inconsistency or in-
accuracy.
.
Diligence
A computer can perform millions of
tasks or calculations with the same
consistency and accuracy. It
doesn’t feel any fatigue or lack of
concentration.
Its memory also makes it superior to that of human beings.
Versatility

Versatility refers to the capability of

a computer to perform different
kinds of works with same accuracy
and efficiency.
Reliability
A computer is reliable as it gives
consistent result for similar set of
data i.e., if we give same set of in-
put any number of times, we will
get the same result.
Automation
Computer performs all the tasks
automatically i.e. it performs tasks
without manual intervention.

Memory
A computer has built-in
memory called primary memory
where it stores data. Second
ary storage are removable de-
vices such as CDs, pen drives, etc.,
which are also used to store data.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED?
Match column A to its correct meaning in column B.

A B

1. Automation a. the rate at which

someone or something
is able to move or
operate.

2. Memory b. careful and persistent

work or effort.
3. Versatility c. state of being correct or

precise.

4. Realibility d. stores and remember

information

5. Diligence e. ability to adapt or be

adapted to many
different functions or
activities.

6. Accuracy f. the quality of being

trustworthy or of
performing consistently
well.

7. Speed g. performs task without

manual intervention

This module equips ALS learners
with the fundamentals of digital
concepts and digital operations
and management. It forms the
basis for more advanced digital
operations and applications.
Topics covered include basic
concepts related to the use of
information communication

technologies (ICTs) in an
increasingly digital world and
basic hardware operations,
software operations, and file
management in using a computer.
