IV. LEARNING PHASES Learning Activities
Timeframe
A. Introduction 90 minutes This lesson requires the application of communication and observation skills
Panimula to verify the nature of the service to be provided and prepare clients for specific
services. It also requires the ability to recognize normal and abnormal hair and
scalp conditions, tactfully refer to a hairdresser to confirm observations and seek
advice on further action.
Before any service begins, the hairdresser must find out what the client
wants or needs. This will require obtaining information from the client such as
details of previous treatments or products that the client uses. The results of the
diagnosis and consultation must be recorded on a client record card or in a
computerized system.
HAIR ANALYSIS
A very important step before giving a cold perm is to make a careful and
correct analysis of the patron’s scalp and hair condition.
1. Analyze Hair Texture
Understanding hair texture is a critical step before
formulating a custom treatment. This will show you the
diameter of each individual strand, what treatments are
suitable for that specific hair type and ensure better end
results.
Here’s How: Take a strand of hair at the crown. Slide your
thumb and index finger up and away from the root to assess
the thickness. The hair will be fine, medium, or coarse.

2. Test Elasticity
Testing elasticity will quickly reveal the current condition of
the cortex and hair health status.
Here’s How: Hold a strand of damp hair firmly between both
thumbs and index fingers, then gently stretch. Healthy hair
will expand up to 1/4 of its length and return to original size.
Porous hair will stretch further, lose its form or break off.

3. Assess Porosity
Assess the porosity before a color service or treatment to
measure the current damage to the hair cuticle.
Here’s How: Hold a small section of hair between your
thumbs and index fingers with strong, even tension. Then,
slide your thumb and index finger up and down to observe
both reflection and roughness. Healthy hair will reflect light
and porous hair will absorb light.

SCALP EXAMINATION
The scalp should be examined very carefully. Abrasions on the scalp can
make cold perming dangerous to a patron. An irritated scalp or badly
damaged hair are both signs that cold perming should be postponed until the
condition is corrected.
RECONDITIONING TREATMENTS
Reconditioning treatments for previously treated hair must be determined.
Dry, brittle or damaged hair which was previously treated, should be given
reconditioning treatment prior to cold hair perming. Recent developments in
conditioners have proven to be beneficial to the hair. Avoid any treatment
requiring massage or heat just prior to a cold wave. Such treatment would
create a sensitive scalp. Permanent waving, tinted, bleached or damaged hair
can be a problem. It is very important to analyze the hair properly.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
These precautionary measures should be observed if previous treatments
are applied on the hair prior to cold wave:
1. Always use a pre-perm conditioner.
2. Use a mild shampoo before perming.
3. Use a mild cold wave lotion.
4. Make a test as often as necessary.
5. There is no room for error. Frequent checking is very important.
6. All color treated hair will have a degree of discoloration after perm.

TYPES OF HAIR CURL

Curl type is determined by the shape of the follicle that your hair grows out
of from your scalp. The flatter or more oval-shaped the follicle, the curlier your
hair; the more circular the cross-section, the straighter your hair. Your curl pattern
is also identified by the shape that the strands of hair make. Most people with
textured hair have more than one type of pattern on their head.

TYPE OF HAIR CURL

1. Wavy - Bendable hair, from fine to coarse,
that has a definite S pattern but lays closer
to the head.

2. Curly - Can range from loose, buoyant

loops to tight, springy corkscrews which
have some sheen but are prone to frizz.

3. Coily - Commonly referred to as afro-

textured or kinky hair, is naturally very dry
and spongy in texture and can be soft and
fine or coarse and wiry.
