 solve percentage problems on discounts, commissions and interest; and
 use the three general formulas on percentage, depending on what is asked in the problem.

Solving Percentage Problems


Let us now study how the two new formulas could be applied on word problems on discounts. A discount is an amount deducted from the original price
of a commodity or service so that the customers can purchase them at a lower price. Below are some sample problems.

In mathematics, a percentage is a number or ratio that can be expressed as a fraction of 100. If we have to calculate percent of a number, divide the
number by the whole and multiply by 100. Hence, the percentage means, a part per hundred. The word per cent means per 100. It is represented by the
symbol “%”.
