I. Định nghĩa câu ước

Là câu thể hiện mong muốn của ai đó về một việc trong tương lai, hiện tại hay quá khứ.
II. Cấu trúc câu ước
1. Loại 1: Ước trong tương lai
*Ước trong tương lai để diễn tả mong ước về sự việc trong tương lai.

- Thể khẳng định: S1 + wish(es) + S2 + would + V1

- Thể phủ định: S1 + wish(es) + S2 + wouldn't + V1
= If only + S + would/could + V
( If only: giá mà )
*Ví dụ: I wish you wouldn't leave your clothes all over the floor.
*Chú ý:
- Nếu chủ ngữ đầu tiên (S1) là chủ ngữ số nhiều, sử dụng "wish".
Ví dụ: They wish
- Nếu chủ ngữ đầu tiên (S1) là chủ ngữ số ít, sử dụng "wishes".
Ví dụ: She wishes
2. Loại 2: Ước trong hiện tại
*Ước trong hiện tại diễn tả mong ước về sự việc không có thật ở hiện tại, hay giả định một điều
ngược lại so với thực tế.

- Thể khẳng định: S1 + wish(es) + S2 + V-ed/PII + O (to be: were/weren't)

- Thể phủ định: S1 + wish(es) + S2 + didn't + V1
= If only + S + Ved (thì quá khứ đơn).
Ví dụ: I wish I could swim.
3. Loại 3: Ước trong quá khứ
*Ước trong quá khứ diễn tả mong ước về sự việc không có thật trong quá khứ, hay giả định một
điều ngược lại so với thực tại đã xảy ra ở quá khứ. Sử dụng câu ước ở quá khứ để ước điều trái
với những gì xảy ra trong quá khứ, thường là diễn tả sự nuối tiếc ở quá khứ.

- Thể khẳng định: S1 + wish(es) + S2 + had + V-ed/PII

- Thể phủ định: S1 + wish(es) + S2 + hadn't + Ved/PII
= If only + S + have + V-ed/PII
Ví dụ: I wish I hadn't failed my exam last week.
