CLAUSE WITH “WISH”

I. Present Wish
1. Usage:
 Dùng để diễn tả những mong ước về một sự việc không có thật ở hiện tại, hay giả định
một điều ngược lại so với thực tế.
 Dùng câu ước ở hiện tại để ước về điều không có thật ở hiện tại, thường là thể hiện sự
nuối tiếc về tình huống hiện tại.
2. Form:

(+) S + wish(es) + S + V2/-ed + O (to be: were / weren’t)

(-) S + wish(es) + S + didn’t + V1 (V nguyên mẫu) = IF ONLY + S+ V (simple past)

 Động từ ở mệnh đề sau wish luôn được chia ở thì quá khứ đơn.
 Động từ BE được sử dụng ở dạng giải định cách, tức là ta chia BE = WERE với tất cả
các chủ ngữ.

Eg: I wish I knew the answer to this question (Tôi ước tôi biết trả lời câu hỏi đó).

I wish I didn't have so much work to do (Tôi ước tôi không có nhiều bài tập để làm)

I wish I were rich. (But I am poor now).

I can’t swim. I wish I could swim.

If only she were here. (The fact is that she isn’t here).

We wish that we didn’t have to go to class today. (The fact is that we have to go to
class today).

II. Past Wish

1. Usage:
 Dùng để diễn tả những mong ước về một sự việc không có thật ở quá khứ, hay giả
định một điều ngược lại so với thực tại đã xảy ra ở quá khứ.
 Dùng câu ước ở quá khứ để ước điều trái với những gì xảy ra trong quá khứ, thường là
để diễn tả sự nuối tiếc với tình huống ở quá khứ.
2. Form:

 (+) S + wish(es) + S + had + V3/-ed

(-) S + wish(es) + S + hadn’t + V3/-ed = IF ONLY + S + Vpp

S + WISH + S + COULD HAVE + P2 = IF ONLY + S + COULD HAVE + P2

Động từ ở mệnh đề sau wish chia ở thì quá khứ hoàn thành.

Eg: If only I had gone by taxi. (I didn’t go by taxi).

I wish I hadn’t failed my exam last year. (I failed my exam).

She wishes she had had enough money to buy the house. (She didn’t have enough
money to buy it).

If only I had met her yesterday. (I didn’t meet her).

She wishes she could have been there. (She couldn’t be there.)

I wish I had gone to your party last week (Tôi ước tôi đi đến bữa tiệc của bạn vào tuần
trước).

III. Future Wish

1. Usage:
 Dùng để diễn tả những mong ước về một sự việc trong tương lai.
 Dùng câu ước ở tương lai với mong muốn ai đó, sự việc gì đó sẽ tốt đẹp hơn trong
tương lai.
2. Form:

(+) S+ wish(es) + S + would + V1

(-) S + wish(es) + S + wouldn’t + V1

IF ONLY + S + would/ could + V (bare-infinitive)

Eg: I wish you wouldn’t leave your clothes all over the floor.

I wish I would be an astronaut in the future.

If only I would take the trip with you next week.

If only I would be able to attend your wedding next week.

 I wish they would stop arguing.

Notes: Đối với chủ ngữ ở vế “wish” là chủ ngữ số nhiều, chúng ta sử dụng wish. (Ví
dụ: They wish, Many people wish,…). Đối với chủ ngữ ở vế “wish” là chủ ngữ số ít, chúng
ta sử dụng wishes. (Ví du: He wishes, the boy wishes,…)

Động từ ở mệnh đề sau ta chia ở dạng nguyên thể vì đứng trước nó là Modal verbs
would/could.

IV.S1 + wish + S2 + would + V

 Khi chúng ta muốn phàn nàn về 1 thói quen xấu.

Eg: I wish Peter wouldn't chew gum all the time (Tôi ước gì Peter không nhai kẹo cao
su mọi lúc).

 Chúng ta cũng có thể dùng I wish + would để diễn tả 1 điều mà chúng ta muốn điều đó
xảy ra.

Eg: I wish the police would do something about these people (Tôi ước cảnh sát sẽ làm
gì đó với những người này)

V. Wish + to V  Diễn tả mong muốn của bản thân với hàm ý trang trọng

Eg: I wish to speak to your boss. (Tôi muốn nói chuyện với sếp của bạn)

I wish to go now. (Tôi muốn đi ngay bây giờ)

VI. Wish + O + to V  Mong muốn ai đó làm gì một cách trang trọng.

Eg: I do not wish you to publish my address. (Tôi không muốn bạn công khai địa chỉ
của tôi)

I wish these people to stay. (Tôi ước họ ở lại)

VII. If only + S = S + wish

Eg: If only I knew the answer to this question (Giá mà tôi biết câu trả lời cho câu hỏi
này).

If only I had gone to your party last week (Giá như tuần trước em đi dự tiệc của
anh).
