Journal 6 Week of 02/12

On Monday, I designed some flyers for the Center for Health and Social Issues and for

various heart healthy events that we have coming up through heart-healthy week. I also attended

a virtual meeting with both the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the North

Central Health District (NCHD). I spoke at this meeting with those who are guiding the project

from the CDC and evaluation side. This was my first meeting I was able to attend with workers

and our partners from the CDC, so it was very informative and engaging to me. I also set up an

additional meeting with a partner from the CDC for next week so that we can discuss the best

ways for me to communicate with our stakeholders and encourage engagement with our study.

On Tuesday I started by assisting other CHSI workers with preparing for various

community health outreach events that the center was hosting this week. I also began working

and reviewing another project my supervisor gave me which is to edit and create citations on a

blight paper that CHSI is wanting to publish. On Wednesday I helped other CHSI members

prepare for the health outreach event that we were hosting that day at the mall. I also worked on

the blight paper more and then began to start planning out how I should block schedule and

group stakeholders. By preparing the order that I will interview them it will make it easier to

schedule the interviews.

On Thursday, I met with my supervisor to discuss various things including my evaluation,

future assignments, and progress on my project as well. I completed my mid-term self-evaluation

and then began the assignments that my supervisor has assigned me at our meeting. For the new

assignments I was diving into answering our IRB questions as well as creating an overall project
proposal and creating a plan for whoever is taking over my project. This proposal and the IRB

questions are very important, and both allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the hopeful

outcomes of my project. On Thursday night I also had the opportunity to attend one of our

Cooper’s Collaborative meeting where community members are able to meet with

commissioners and other community members to voice their opinions and concerns. I thoroughly

enjoy getting to attend these meetings as they give me such a better understanding of the

perspectives of residents. Thursday, I had finished the answers to the IRB questions so on Friday

I sent my drafted answers to supervisor so that we would be able to review at the beginning of

next week. On Friday I also continued to work on the overall proposal of my project.

Lessons Learned

This week allowed me to focus on self-reflection as our mid-term self-evaluation was due.

Evaluating yourself can be very hard but I made it a point to meet with supervisor to discuss the

evaluation and if there was anything he thought that I could improve on over the next two

months. This week also taught me about flexibility and the importance of being able to go with

the flow as things are ever-changing within Public Health.
