On Monday of this week, I began blocking out and planning for what two weeks we
should schedule interviews for, and I selected the two weeks before spring break. I also started
completing and reviewing the IRB application for this project by myself to show my boss on the
following day. I also had the opportunity to attend a very interesting NAACP forum on crime,
unsolved homicides, and community involvement; it was very eye opening into the truth about
what has been happening in Baldwin. I heard from several county officials, including the Sheriff,
Local Police Major, District Attorney, City Manager, County Manager, Superintendent, and a
families of unsolved homicide victims were pleading for change within the community.
On Tuesday, I reviewed the IRB application with my boss and made all appendices
stakeholders, and the email sent to stakeholders inviting them to participate in our study. On
Wednesday, I was able to attend the Harrisburg food drive for the first time in my internship, and
it was an enriching experience. I loved being able to do work that felt like it was making a
difference, such as feeding a family who may not have been fed. It was neat getting to see that it
is the same people involved at almost all food drives, health outreach events, and community
meetings. These individuals and are vital to this community. I also met with our CDC partners to
talk about my project and tips that they have for my survey and meeting with the stakeholders.
On Thursday I was working on the blight manuscript that I had been assigned and
worked on prepping other various media materials for upcoming events that the Center is
hosting. On Friday, I finished my part of the blight manuscript and sent it to my supervisor for
him to review. I also began collecting and analyzing articles for an in-depth lit review that will
help me build my overall project proposal better. Overall, it was a really great and productive
week!
Lessons Learned
I think my favorite thing I learned this week was how to use Zotero! Oh, that app is a life
changer and I so wish that it was introduced to us earlier in our college careers! It is a wonderful
way to keep track of multiple citations and resources and make notes all in one place. It truly has
been so helpful to organize all the various research projects I am completing throughout my time
here.
